Alex dropped the monkey avatar. We're all switching to the monkey avatar as a) a sign of support for Alex to return as his usual, likable self and b) to coerce Alex into re-adopting the avatar that we associate with him so closely.

Bring back the monkey.

You are welcome to adopt the avatar yourself for the purpose of this campaign.

I do want the Netflix streaming.
You already do that with your laptop though. Evidently the Oppo is the cat's @ss (sorry Dave) for PQ. Streaming Netflix is for sh!t-Q in regards to PQ and the DVD-A and SACD feature would make you the eccentric audio dude on every body's Christmas list. I know you had that one bad experience with MCM but not all recordings are engineered equal. What was it again that you didn't like in multi channel?

Alex, if was STP - Core. The Dolby Digital track was excellent, but the multi-channel didn't sound great. I think that it was my DVD player (that was decoding the DVD-A track) that was lacking. That was another reason that the Oppo caught my eye, but I only have one DVD-A disc, and it already sounds great with the Dolby Digital track - so I'd rather check out some blu-rays. :D

There is a Carl Orf Carmina Burana DVD-A out there conducted by Zubin Mehta that I have a small sample of. I compared it to my EMI CD recording of it and the difference was profound. It really depends on the recording but I do remember that you mentioned before that you had not listened to an album all the way through for years. I haven't watched a TV show all the way through for quite some time. Using a DVR barely enables me to get though an episode of The Mentalist.

I'm glad to hear you're diggin' the TV and are about to buy an Oppo. :)

that's my ONE and only DVD-A :)

max out your volume, and play it very loud (there are low volume passages)

I've got the stereo SACD version. I think there's about 30dB+ dynamic range on that disc. Quiet passages at about 70dB with peaks above 105dB.

That's it ... I've been wanting that thing for years. Time to start hunting it down again. It's not always available. Better see if I can find it on Amazon before Adam snatches it up.

Great pick!

Rick - I agree with nibhaz. I've watched Netflix streaming on my new TV through my MacBook, and it looked good (once I manually set the bitrate).

Well, I didn't get the Oppo. Instead, I got the Panny DMP-BD60. :D Just $30 more, so I bit. It should be here tomorrow. I upgraded to blu-ray on my Netflix account, and hopefully will have two blu-rays to watch on Saturday. Right now, I'm thinking Transformers and Casino Royale.
I think that’s a really good pick Adam. I spent about an hour or two yesterday comparing various BR players to give you suggestions that would be close in cost to the Oppo, with good up-conversion but also get you into the BR arena.

My final suggestions with current market prices were going to be the Panny you chose, or the Samsung 25XX.

I finally decided not to post anything, because I didn’t want to give you too much to think about and cause you to miss the next day shipping window.:D

Way to step up! What’s next?

I bet it is either a new receiver/prepro or a new amp.
I would vote for a new receiver/prepro. I think he’s ready to move into all HDMI connections.;)

I'm thinking Onkyo PR-SC886 or Onkyo PR-SC885

Since I bought that 980 off you, the only RCA connection I have is the interconnect going to my sub. I just wanted the 980 so I could do multi channel SACD over HDMI; I haven’t even put a DVD in it yet.

A new receiver that I'll use as a prepro, would be my guess. I've been eyeing the Denon 3808 and 2809. Amazon sold out of them before I got interested enough to buy either, though. The 3808 got down to $975.

The 3808 looks like a great pick.

I love my 885 but it gets hot and I think it would freak Adam out. I am used to it and try not to think about it.

Besides the scaler which I think is a big reason to get those models it not really a big deal now that he will have mostly HD sources and a good scaler in the BD player.

My Pioneer 1015 gets pretty hot, so I don't think that the Onkyo would freak me out. :) I think that the current Onkyo designs are ugly, though, so I won't get one. I think the Denons have a nice look to them.

Really excellent points!

The Reon chip in my 876 gets blazing hot. If you don’t need the Reon’s power then the Onkyo’s don’t stand out as much. I only use mine for signals coming out of my cable box. I let the Reon deinterlace and perform noise reduction. It cleans up the few SD channels I watch and doesn’t seem to harm the HD channels at all. I let all of my other sources pass strait through to my display. I let the Reon in my BR player handle DVDs.

Adam,
I have to agree with adk highlander that the 3808 is definitely worth consideration.

Yeah, I'm kinda kicking myself for not buying the 3808 from Amazon last month. I was so torqued about the first delivery experience with the TV that I put off buying a big item like that from them, and now I'm regretting it. On the other hand, I have $1000 in my pocket that I wouldn't have, so it's not all bad. :D My Pioneer is still doing well, and the blu-ray player will be the first thing that I own that outputs audio over HDMI anyway.

Can’t argue with that! It wasn’t until recently that I saw how good the Denons look.
