This original IMAX film has been re-cast on 65MM. The content, image and sound quality are stunning. Great way to really enjoy that HD display and sound system. Be sure to watch the Bonus Features.

I agree, the making of feature was almost as good as the movie itself.

Religion, man's impact on the environment, human culture. Zero dialogue. The movie has a very good, enjoyable delivery, if not quite demo material, with some application of DNR and/or EE here and there. A few video nazis have complained, but the content makes these things more than easy to forgive.

There are some really cool shots, and some very impressive sequences. Highly recommend at least a rental. :)

I looked into this film after reading this thread, and it really does sound quite interesting. Perhaps this is the perfect time for me to see it, since I get to view it in much higher fidelity now.

BARAKA is an astonishing visual and aural documentary.

BARAKA is a Masterpiece of Artistic Cinema.

The visuals are stupendous.

The audio soundtrack is prodigious.

* A Pure Delight for the Senses. * It is my #1 Blu-Ray. :)

I watched it over the weekend. Very interesting. The lack of narration pushes it to a different level and has the impact they were intending. It shows both the beauty and mystery of the world itself, but also people and all of our idiosyncrasies. The audio and video are quite impressive.

I prefer the BBC Planet Earth series to this film, but this film has a definite impact as well. I'd say this one is a MUST SEE.

I watched this over the weekend. Stunning video and good audio.

Some of the video was a bit skewed in places from them using wide angle lenses which was kind of weird. I watched it on a TV that is 52" though, on a 100"+ TV it probably would have made it feel more like IMAX.. so, it might have been a problem on my end. :)

I watched it with my girlfriend and we went back and forth on the lack of narration. We both agreed it would have been nice to have a subtitle feature where it would give the location where the footage was and you could be able to turn it on and off. Some places I would have liked to know where it was filmed.

I started watching the special feature about "the making of" but as soon as that smug hippie started talking I had to turn it off because it was going to ruin my thoughts of the movie.

You are too funny:p

The "smug hippie" is Ron Fricke who actually designed and built the special 70mm time lapse cameras that were used in the film. He certainly is self possessed as are many who do rather than talk but I didn't find him smug. I think making a non-verbal documentary of this amazing planet and the human condition while holding the attention of an audience for 96 minutes is really quite something.

Although like you I was wondering about the locations, for me it was refreshing not to have to listen to someone describe the images and just go with it.

I agree that is shows much better on a large screen.

I am left wondering what the building was with the glittery reflective walls and ceilings was. I am going to make a point of watching the film again before I send it back. The filmed scenes were impressive and the order in which they were shown seemed to have some sort of relevance as well (for me at least).

The self possessed smug hippy certainly did convey a sense superiority with his tone and mannerisms, like he was being put out by having to explain the obvious to an imbecile.

Hey Alex, did you enjoy your little cousin taking a rest in the hot tub?
Yeah that monkey came from the stoner side of the family. He calls it perma-buzz but I think he's just a burn out. Hanging out in that pool all day long not even concerned that it's freakin' snowing? ... helloooo?!?

* The building you refer to is the: Iman Reza Shrine complex in Mashhad, Iran.

If you say so but in the film it looked way more spectacular with a more natural light being reflected and it seemed bigger but there was a lack of people so you couldn't really scale it. Thanks for the response and I will just take your word on that.

Yeah, I know what you mean about that huge Cathedral type interior with zillion of mirrors and reflections.

But be my guest and try to define the exact place.
* Here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baraka_(film)

* All the places in the documentary film are mentioned, and some with pictures. And don't forget that the place I already mentioned is a huge complex with several wings of buildings, and that the picture seems to be only one small entrance from a much bigger room.

I'll keep searching till I find something more concrete, but for right now, this is the best that I can come up with.

Here's a nice review of the Blu-Ray.
