Serenity vs the mighty SVS PB13 Ultra

i'm still trying to understand how the low end tuning affects the upper bass though ... are you choosing the mode by ear?
I found my PB12-Plus easier to blend with the mains using the 16Hz tune. It may have something to do with flicking the switch on the amp when you add the port plugs. Does the amp self limit or retune the upper frequencies to limit SPL when it's running the deeper tune?

good question. the subsonic filter moves lower (that's a given) ... but it's possible that the lower tuning = lower SPL in the upper ranges. too much bass maybe in the higher tuning?

in that case, EQ will probably solve the upper range problems whatever the tuning if that was the case :)

I'm pretty certain they're "REEFERS"! :D
(They're that hungry for a reason!)
I thought that was Sensi on the second episode! :D

Cruise - I think that it's been removed from the manual, but when I bought my PC13-Ultra, the manual said to contact SVS before setting the 10Hz tune. I don't know why, but my manual says that.

Many things happen when you plug the port.

Port air velocity goes way up. and the reponse does lose SPL where it counts most.

My suggestion is use it with the 20hz tune and don't plug anything. You may miss the sub 20hz stuff, but honestly do you really need it?

I think if you want stuff that deep you need to look into an infinite baffle sub.

Eqing won't increase your max volume it will only smooth your response. Make your goal to get 20hz to 20khz flat first. Then start jacking with low monsters.:) Don't forget your sub is probably the best on your block and maybe even the best in your neighborhood.

Isiberian: no doubt my subs rule this roost!

I didn't get the chance to try the opening of Serenity yet with the 20hz tune due to neighbor considerations. I should get the chance after work today. I assume the Ultras will will breeze through with the subsonic filter at 20hz. Lord knows 20hz is still scary deep!

Mike C: does the AS-EQ1 try to boost below the subsonic filter setting or does it recognize it and leave it be? I'm hoping the latter is the case.

whatever your tune, i would recommend at least the large room compensation setting.

the EQ1 will not boost below tuning - somehow it recognizes the natural slope of the subwoofer.

That's what I have them set to now. Seems I forgot to add that.

Serenity??

Serenity is a great movie for Bass, and all in all a fun movie to watch, I always enjoy that one...

Its been a while, but I'll have to fire that up again to see how my 18's do with it... RMK is correct, all subs have limits, and just when you think you have the perfect setup, you start pushing the envelope to see how much more you can do, and realize that you could have more...

This is one of the reasons you see different alignments come into play, I'll bet RMK will tell you switching from multiple sealed to a couple of tapped hornes he truly realized the difference in output was substantial, as well as the cost... :)
I've been lurking here reading ya'lls comments. So I did a quick search for Serenity. I'm not sure if I have the right movie? Is this a movie from 2005 or a TV series? anyway I,m always looking for good entertainment for BD. PLease tell an old man which movie exactly your talking about so i can pick this one up.
Thanks

Start with the movie ... if you like it, you can get the TV show that the movie was based on (Firefly).:)

Actually you want to do it the othe way around if you can. Serenity kind of winds up what is done in the series.

I believe the movie was meant to put an ending to the series. There are lots of "fan created" episodes online.

Round two..... Fight!

Let me start off with a thank you to all who stopped by to help.

Round two begins with the Ultras in the 20hz tune and room comp set to large. I nervously turn the volume up to -6db under reference and press play.
Wow, lots more energy pours out, but I hear what might have been a smudge of distortion in the lower end, and maybe a clank.

With a furrowed brow I switch both subs room comp to medium and restart the opening. Now we're talking! I did notice some reduction in subsonic energy but it also made this LFE sound smooth and effortless. With new found courage I twisted the volume right to reference level and started the chapter over. Perfect. Did I mention it was perfect? This story ends with a full veiwing of Serenity :D thanks again guys it rocked!!

Using the tuning tools provided on the Ultras rear panel we have defeated the LFE monster named Serenity.
Mark this one up as a win!

This shows it's better to give up the sub 20hz stuff for the 20 hz + stuff. You can't hear the subsonic stuff anyway. And yeah you can feel it, but Audio is about the ears. Plus music will sound much better.

... and a minimum of, how many subs is it you have Mike? :D

Nice thread Cruise. I think you have shown that there is more to a sub than how low it plays.

in my possession:

3 in my HT#2 (still sad about this one, it was previously 4)
2 in my HT#1
2 in my treadmill rig
2 DIY's
1 in my bedroom

Cruise missile,

just to confirm ... we're assuming you are switching the subsonic filter at the back as you are plugging and unplugging ports right? :)

Yes sir, as per the instructions. Also, I'm always up for more experimentation. That's the part that drives us all right? The pursuit?? I'll try that tomorrow after work.

I was surprised by how much the subs level varies between the tunes fwiw.
