Internet Explorer 8, any thoughts?

Seriously, I have no life.
I've been thinking of trying Firefox for a while now.
Is there a way of temporarily using it, just incase I want to go back?

Thanks for the info,
Rick
You can download it and if you don't like it (not likely, because it works really well), you can either remove it or just not use it. I was ready to toss my desktop out the window and then found out about Firefox. I have been a happy camper since and it's been at least 5 years. First thing I did after loading my anti-virus software on my laptop and scanning it, was go to Mozilla.com and download Firefox. I have IE but IIRC, I have used it 3 times since I got this laptop in January of last year.

I agree with everyone, IE is a mess... and while I do like Firefox, I much prefer Google Chrome! It's a little bit more lean of a browser, and it's damn speedy.

There are still a few bugs with it, yes, but so far it's been great for me.

What is really nice about the new browser war --- since the 7056 build of Windows 7, you have been able to uninstall Internet Explorer entirely, in favor of installing your own preferred browser.

Internet Explorer is by design a disaster

A browser that runs in Kernel Mode in an operating system.... this means that the program itself has almost unlimited access to all of the internals of the operating system, any flaw or failure or bug immediately has the potential to put your system to serious imminent risk, of course if there is something that may be exploited by hackers you are totally unprotected, and this is a design choice.... from Microsoft.....

Wonder what the architects in Redmond was thinking when they made this design?, very very very bad if you ask me.....

Use Firefox, Opera or Chrome or better, Firefox on Linux

Thanks for all the replies, really appreciate it!

Let me ask it this way: Can I have both, the Firefox icon and IE on my desktop, and use them at different times?

Yes !!

You can install any of them and as many of them as you want, can have IE, Opera, Chrome, Firefox installed at same time... but one of them must be the default browser, so that when you click on a .html file or sth else that will open in a browser, the default browser will start.

For instance IE will see that it's not the default browser when it starts (if that's the case) then you will get a dialog box asking if you want IE to be default browrser, then say NO, and check the box that says sth like, don't ask about this again....

Other than that, no issues with this

I'm running IE8 and Firefox. Actually, I like IE8. It seems to run MUCH faster than IE7 did. Still learning the differences. But so far I like it (IE8).

I had both running and my browser set to firefox. However, I always seemed to go back to IE because all my links and bookmarks were at my fingertips and didn't want to start from scratch.

I never really noticed with the switch from IE7 to 8, but you maybe on to something...I'm content with IE and have no need to change JMO.

Very much agreed ^^^^^. I love Firefox and will never use IE again. Firefox is not only safer, but runs much smoother w/o any major problems whatsoever. I can NOT recommend it enough. Way to go Mozilla! ;);) Sorry, I have had a lot of sugar today.:eek::eek:

Cheers,

Phil
I love this one feature of firefox...... this plugin that shows weather and temperatures at some locations of your choice..... perhaps not so useful..... but way way cool.....

I've been using Chrome pretty consistently now... It's my default browser, but I do have an installation of Firefox (Just in case Chrome decides it doesn't want to work)... I've completely removed Internet Explorer - It's terrible and it's terrible-ness should be noted in history... <time to go edit WikiPedia> :p

I had some trouble with Chrome every now and then suddenly starting to "steal" a lot of CPU, anyone else seen anything like that?

But I like Chrome, unfortunately not available for Linux, and Windows version doesn't install on Linux via Wine....

I really haven't had many problems like that. I get a few "Oh, Snaps" though!

If there is a flash window open, I may encounter a slight hang...

I just can't wait until the Google Operating System is released  :D :p

Listened to one of the Main Google architects a while ago......
They only use simple off-the-shelf H/W and strictly Linux, everywhere, so if it's a Google O/S it will probably be some kind of Linux distro.....

Well, OS X was based off of Unix... So I could see a Google OS being based off of Linux... It would run well, that's for sure!

well, yeah, but Google is very OpenSource minded, and OS X is not OpenSource, so it's not gonna happen.

I will tell you more about why they are so focused on OpenSource later..... if anybody want to know..... it's NOT about saving money for licences..... it's many other advantages.....

wow...... quoting myself now

Don't feel bad, haha. When you get back, I would be interested in hearing more about Google's workings. Have a great night!

Google and OpenSource

I had the pleasure of listening to Chris DiBona (Google OpenSource Manager) a while ago, and he told a lot about how they work and how they roll out whole datacenters of simple off-the-shelf Linux machines in just hours. Mighty impressive :D
so I guess, if you do a search on Google, it may be likely that you have a machine all to yourself at that instant.

OpenSource is not about price, it's not about saving money, it's about buying yourself business advantages, with OpenSource you get a whole bunch of advantages that's not possible with "closed" software

If you want sth new or some new functionality in Windows or other Microsoft products like MS Sql Server.... you will have to wait till next release, what if this is so important for the business that you can't wait, you may then be out of business....

With OpenSource you get the following immediate advantages
  • Sourcecode is readily available, this means you can yourself set developers to make change and make this specific function within a short timeframe.
  • Support base is wider, with lots of developers around, in general, support is easier
  • There is no one with the power to restrict how the software is used
  • There is no single entity on which the future of the software depends
  • The availability of the source code and the right to modify it
  • The right to redistribute modifications and improvements to the code, and to reuse other open source code
  • The right to use the software in any way

So OpenSource is about keeping control yourself and on your business and not let the control slip away to a third party.

(Wow, his hair is even longer now.............)

Chris said that they'd never release a new or custom Operating system or a new Web server or anything like this, they will rather do contributions to make the existing platforms even better, and Google is a major contributor to improvements in OpenSource projects all around......
