Since I have spent a considerable amount of time & money building a decent home theater, the allure of going out to a movie theater has lost a lot of its magic. We still take the kids because I want them to have the experience, but when The Jonas Brothers 3D experience clocks in at $15 a ticket…

Personally, I like being in control of when the movie starts, how loud it is, pausing if need be, the price of concessions…etal. I also find that more often than not, the picture quality on my display is better than the screen in the theater.
It’s unfortunate, but when I see a preview for a new movie, I know I’ll be waiting even longer for it to come out on disc before I’ll be seeing it. But, it’s worth the wait for me.

So, what about the rest of you - do you still make the trip to the theater, or wait for the movie to be released on disc? Or do you see it in the theater, and if you like it, get the disc when it’s released.

Options:

1. I can’t wait - I’m going to the theater
2. My HT will be primed & ready to go when the movie is out on disc
3. See it in the theater & on disc

My vote should have been for "My HT will be primed & ready to go when the movie is out on disc" I never go to the theater unless I am dragged kicking and screaming... :D

I think I paid more attention then, but it doesn't matter were I live. The rapture will come long before Texas votes liberal :p.

If it is something I am really wanting to see, I usually just go see it. If it is really good, then I will watch again on br or dvd. If I still really like it, I will then go buy it. However, if it looks good but not real excited about it, I will wait for it to come out on br or dvd before watching it. Are we confused yet? :D:D

Cheers,

Phil

My general impression is that virtually all new movies suck despite the hype and media generated excitement. Combine that with the fact that I really hate the whole theater experience in general and my vote would be "I'll wait to see how the movie stands the test of time before I waste one minute or one penny watching it."

All the hype over "300" and when I saw a few minutes of it, all I thought was, "this sucks, what's the fuss".

I echo Phil's sentiments. It really depends on the movie. I'm glad I saw the first Matrix movie at the theatre. Same with Transformers, Pan's Labyrinth, Dark Knight and Superman Returns. I definitely want to see the new Star Trek on the big screen too.

But when it comes to movies that are comedies or dramas, or stuff that look less visually exciting, I have zero problems waiting for it to come to disc.

Generally speaking, I enjoy going to the theatre with my lady or with my friends. It's a nice social thing to do. It's pricey as hell, which probably explains why we're starting to have so many "movie nights" at my place these days!

cheers,

When our TV was a 32 incher and our speakers were wall mounts I still liked going to the theatre (Go Maple Leafs! :D) but a recent upgrade to a 50" Panny (Adam :)), better speakers, addition of a second sub and a couple of sound panels (PD ) has me diggin' the home front more and more.

Right after I get done stuffing my face today the only place I am going 'out' to is the gym. :D

Hey, now. Nothing says cinematic bliss like a 27" CRT 4:3 TV showing a movie in letterbox. :) Honestly, though, it's fine for me. Although, I'm sure that once I get my 50" Panny (or similar), I'll wonder why I waited so long. :D

I have not been to a movie in the theater since my wife and I went on our first date. It was the first Doctor Doolittle with Eddie Murphy.

We always wait for it to come out on disc, and then we'll buy it and see it. I rent more now with the BR being so costly, but as the price comes down I'll probably go back to buying them.

I never got in to the whole Netflix thing. I'm the type of guy who, when I spend money, like to walk away with something tangible. I understand that it's a service, and a convenience to a lot of people but I'd rather see it on my shelf and go pick it out and watch it whenever I want.

My answer is: it really depends on the movie. It has to have a pretty compelling reason for me to actually go to the theater these days. Something on part with Dark Knight is what it is going to take, most things I can watch at home and have a better experience.

I forgo the theater now. I think. I'll let myself go once a year, but I wonder if I'll even do that anymore. The last two were TDK and American Gangster. Within the first 5-10 minutes of TDK, I was honestly asking myself why I didn't just wait for the BD release. Sure enough, it sounds and looks better at my place, in my overall opinion. However, I didn't watch it in IMAX, and it's quite possible I would feel differently there.

I have no imminent plans to watch anything in the theater. Maybe The Hobbit would do it. Haven't seen any of the recent Bond movies, my favorite filmmakers' works (Coen Brothers), Iron Man, Del Toro stuff, or whatever else in the theater.

I always wait for the disc, I could care less about going to the theater.

As bad as my local movie theaters are, I just don't have the patience to wait on a movie that I highly anticipate.

For example: Watchmen, X-Men Origins, etc.

There are a few movies out there that I will see on the big screen because the visuals can't be matched at home. Upcoming Star Trek will be one of them.

The audio at the local theater is pitiful.

The audio at home is oustanding! The 52XBR6 isn't bad either.

I wait for a lot of movies to get to BD release before watching.

I used to be the same way, but here is what I have found:

If you go the theaters to watch movies, you hear about the new stuff when you watch previews.

If you don't go to the theaters, then you don't hear about movies until either right before or when they enter the theaters.

So my wait has been basically the same.

I just can't put up with the crowds at the movies anymore anyways. The dumbass people chomping on their popcorn, spilling **** everywhere, talking, putting their feet up, etc. etc.

I go to the big, brash ones like Transformers, Ironman and the like. I strongly dislike the 'loud munchers', but what makes me want to never go back is the people who text or talk on the cells.
I'd like to think that because of our decent home theater, I don't have to go back there again. But with Terminator Salvation, Transformers 2 and Star Trek coming soon, I doubt I am able to wait.
