P.S. - you are pretty lame for your post anyway. What is your opinion of waht was stated Agree or disaggree- pretty cowardly weak , uninformed response. I gave you a signed red chicklet
Cowardly, weak and uninformed response because I didn't address the fallacious statements?
Okay, lets try, since this is my area of study.
I don't think being a minority makes you a victim of anything except numbers. The only things I can think of that are truly discriminatory are things like the United Negro College Fund, Jet Magazine, Black Entertainment Television, and Miss Black America. Try to have things like the United Caucasian College Fund, Cloud Magazine, White Entertainment Television, or Miss White America; and see what happens...Jesse Jackson will be knocking down your door.
Being a minority does not inherently make you a victim, this is true. At the same time, there are structural forms of marginalization that predominantly effect minorities, not because of any intrinsic trait mind you, rather because of their geographic location, stereotypes and other forms of oppression.
Examples: The prison system, since 1970 and the "war on crime" there has been a marked increase in prisonization of individuals. In this time the rate of imprisonment for blacks has skyrocketed relative to other elasticities (and their inclusion in the general population), especially that of whites (Western 2006,
Punishment and Inequality in America). This has nothing to do with the individual itself, but instead, is related to other factors (See modified age-graded life-course theory and social disorganization theory for more). Furthermore, it has been shown that this mass imprisonment is not significantly related in the drop in crime over the time period.
Another interesting example: When controlling for education, physical appearance, speech and other extraneous variables whites are likely to recieve a call back 2 times more often than an equally qualified black individual. In fact, when a criminal component is added a white individual who has committed a crime is equally likely to receive a call back as a black individual who has not committed a crime. All jobs applied for where entry level. There were a total of 350 employers audited within this study. See Marked: Race, Crime and Finding Work in an Era of Mass Incarceration by Devah Pager for further description of the experiment published.
Guns do not make you a killer. I think killing makes you a killer. You can kill someone with a baseball bat or a car, but no one is trying to ban you from driving to the ball game.
I agree, guns are not what kill people, it is the individual who pulls the trigger. That being said lax gun control results in a higher rate of gun related deaths - compare the US to countries with more strict gun laws for examples. Does this mean guns should be banned? I don't think so. For full disclosure: I have been shooting guns since I was six.
I believe they are called the Boy Scouts for a reason, which is why there are no girls allowed. Girls belong in the Girl Scouts! ARE YOU LISTENING MARTHA BURKE ?
It certainly is called boy scouts for a reason, this does not remove the fact that the hegemonic sex within American culture is male for no other reason but socialization and long standing tradition. Similar to minority ethnicity woman are marginalized in this country in a variety of ways.
I think that if you feel homosexuality is wrong, it is not a phobia, it is an opinion.
I have the right 'NOT' to be tolerant of others because they are different, weird, or tick me off.
You have every right to not be tolerant, but you have no right to strip an individual's liberties because they are different. Furthermore, because one does not line up with what your religion deems moral does not mean they should be marginalized. Separation of church and state means just that - there should be no interaction.
When 70% of the people who get arrested are black, in cities where 70% of the population is black, that is not racial profiling; it is the Law of Probability.
Please give me actual data to this. Blacks make up about 12-13% of the population but make up about 30% of the prison system. Law of probability? I think not. Considering non-hispanic whites make up 27% of the prison population and about 65% of the population
This disparity is due to socioeconomic status, not any inherent trait to the ethnicity as has been shown time and time again.
I believe that if you are selling me a milkshake, a pack of cigarettes, a newspaper or a hotel room, you must do it in English! As a matter of fact, if you want to be an American citizen, you should have to speak English!
I see this as American arrogance. Many countries around the world "deal" with having individuals learn multiple languages because there is not a xenophobic fear of the rest of the world. Why should America be any different?
My father and grandfather didn't die in vain so you can leave the countries you were born in to come over and disrespect ours.
Yeah, just like we came and disrespected the people who had this country first? Please. Americans and not disrespect this country.
I think the police should have every right to shoot you if you threaten them after they tell you to stop. If you can't understand the word 'freeze' or 'stop' in English, see the above lines.
This is asking for yet another disparity in police shootings. We already have a huge social welfare program in prison and it doesn't work, why make it worse?
I don't think just because you were not born in this country, you are qualified for any special loan programs, government sponsored bank loans or tax breaks, etc., so you can open a hotel, coffee shop, trinket store, or any other business.
Birth is not the only way to make one a citizen. I believe that all citizens should have the ability to be free and equal (specifically in a Rawlsian sense, but that is beyond what I believe reasonable) and this has yet to be achieved for many.
We did not go to the aid of certain foreign countries and risk our lives in wars to defend their freedoms, so that decades later they could come over here and tell us our constitution is a living document; and open to their interpretations.
The constitution is a living document constantly being understood by the judicial branch. That is how previous judgments are overturned. Both sides of the political spectrum use this to their advantage.
I don't hate the rich; I don't pity the poor..
I don't hate the rich, I am concerned with why poverty targets specific groups far more than others. If it is a structural issue I believe it should be addressed appropriately.
I think Bill Gates has every right to keep every penny he made and continue to make more. If it ticks you off, go and invent the next operating system that's better, and put your name on the building.
Taxation is required for government to exist. Additionally, some forms of socialism are beneficial to society. Think about schools, roads and various other infrastructures that would have allowed America to be the power it once was for so long.
It doesn't take a whole village to raise a child right, but it does take a parent to stand up to the kid; and smack their little behinds when necessary, and say 'NO!'
Not everyone has the means to realize how a child should be properly raised.
I think tattoos and piercing are fine if you want them, but please don't pretend they are a political statement.. And, please, stay home until that new lip ring heals. I don't want to look at your ugly infected mouth as you serve me French fries!
See the bill of rights.
I am sick of 'Political Correctness.' I know a lot of black people, and not a single one of them was born in Africa ; so how can they be 'African-Americans'? Besides, Africa is a continent. I don't go around saying I am a European-American because my great, great, great, great, great, great grandfather was from Europe. I am proud to be from America and nowhere else
And if you don't like my point of view, tough...
I don't care what a group of individuals chooses to call themselves. Aside from that, not all blacks have ancestry in Africa.
I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG, OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA , AND TO THE REPUBLIC, FOR WHICH IT STANDS, ONE NATION UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTYAND JUSTICE FOR ALL!
I was asked to send this on if I agree or delete if I don't. It is said that 86% of Americans believe in God. Therefore I have a very hard time understanding why there is such a problem in having 'In God We Trust' on our money and having 'God' in the Pledge of Allegiance. Why don't we just tell the 14% to BE QUIET!!!
We have separation of church and state for a reason. God was added to the pledge under the notion that communists would not say the phrase and thus would be rooted out of their positions within government, schools etc.. Fear mongering is why god is in our pledge, nothing else.
Edit: As far as the common use of our founding fathers' quotes go it is useless rhetoric that proves nothing due to lack of context. There are many socialistic leaning quotes from the founding fathers as there are staunchly conservative ones. Misinformation at its greatest.
