my current sub is a 10" 100watt rms rca (optimus) sub,, see page 9

support.radioshack.com/support_audio/doc65/65829.pdf

and here are the demensions to my room.. it isnt a perfect cube or rectangle.. it has a vaulted ceiling..

ok,, with all that said,, i hope it was detailed enough,,, i have been looking at the

BIC H100,,, because of price and reviews (favorite so far)
SVS PB12-NSD,,, still doing research but so far i like what im reading
VELODYNE MINIVEE,,, small, tons of power... not sure if i need it
VELODYNE SPL1000 or SPL1200 ,,, same as above
HSU,,, still researching and reading reviews...

these are just the ones that caught my eyes.. but i have considered partsexpress kits aswell..

my current sub as you know sux... below a certain freq,, it just dies.. nothing.. i have played an IASCA sound quality test disc (car audio) that has a SUPERMAN track on it.. and at a certain time there is a 5hz bass not being played.. now coming from S/Q in car audio and having an IB mounted sub (Image Dynamics IDMAX) im missing that note from my current sub.. and i have to turn the sub all the way up just to get any movement from the sub at all during that song..

during movies it booms but i feel as if something is missing,, and when i demo other systems with the same movies i hear a lot more low end...

i want quality,, i want sound ,, and i want to keep my bank account open..

can anyone help guide me in the right direction.

btw.. the only subs i have been able to demo.. velodyne minvee and dls3750.. but that was in a controlled enviroment at an a/v store..

thanks in advance.. and if someone has already posted something similar.. i would appreciate a link and i appologize in advance for this thread,,

thanks again..

oh.. my current set up.. is this..
YAMAHA RX-V630 ,, RCVR
NHT 1.3A ,,, mains
NHT VS-1.2 ,,, center
NHT NEW WAVE ,,, surround
RCA PRO SW120P 10" ,,, sub
SANYO 42" LCD

Hi jaejw.

The list price on the Velo is $1649. Is that your budget limit?

thats more than twice as much as i planned on spending.. i think tops,, would probably be around 800 bux... i guess im not expecting bone shattering bass... but something to replace the weak sub that i already have.. and something that will satisfy my hunger for low end response...

the current sub just isnt doing it.. and i think i paid $110.00bux for it

Don't expect to hit 5 hz. with any of the subs you listed, besides there's not much material that low for music, or HT. The helicopers on the Irene scene in Black Hawk Down create some bass notes around 8 hz., but even if you miss those rare super low notes, you aren't really missing much.

My vote goes for the SVS.

yeah I wasnt expecting to reach 5hz,,, I just no when ever I played that particular track,,, the sub wouldnt even attempt to play it unlikemy car sub which played it fine with no problems at all...
the bestsub I heard (felt) play that note in a car were 2 15" image dynamic subs in an aperiodic enclosure... but enough about car audio

the svs pb12 is something I recently discovered while doingmy searches for other subs.... I will definately keep a close eye oni thanks....

btw is my living room an odd shape ,,, is it possible to create the sound I want without spending too much money

At $800, I would have a look at Rythmik, SVS, HSU, Epik, and eD.

I would say that most ported subs would have s subsonic filter to prevent the sub from even attempting to play a 5 hz. note. Anything about 5 hz. below tuning the sub has no control and can easily be damaged by overexcursion. Now if you have a sealed sub, that's a whole different story.

going sealed would mean more power to move the sub,, correct.... atleast that is what I dealt with in car audio

do u think I would be better off doing a KIT... from partsexpress

or using something like a malestrom sub in a ported enclosure

if im safer buyingthe svs then I will lookin that direction... but I did have my hopes set on the less expensive bic h100...... would getting2 of them on placing on the sides of the tv work... if memory serves correct,, adding another sub would gain 6db,, correct

Yes, dual BIC H100s would be nice, and you gain 6 db by having them co located, and 3 db by having two of them in the same room. Also having two of them in different locations in the room would smoothe out the frequency response and help with room nodes. With your budget, you could do dual SVS PB10-NSDs since they are only $400 right now, and you can get 5% off for ordering two. That would be an awesome setup right there.

If you are willing to build you own enclosures, your $800 budget is enough to build dual Kappa Perfect 12s. If you shop around you can probably even get an EP2500 and an EQ under budget.

after reading up on the dual subs,,, which I could do for about 500-600bux,,, I think I would go that route... the kits would be very nice though

the bic h100 reviews that I have seen make it a perfect candidate for my wallet,,, and bought one at a time,, I can easily sneak the twin in the house without the wife finding out....

slightly off topic,,,, I noticed that when I plugged both l/r on sub input,,,, the sub sounded muddy and was not pleasing.... and not dynamic.... I removed one and now it sounds beter than before... but still no lowend response whyis this (dont want to make the same mistake ) ,,,

Since you are experienced in Car Audio I suggest the Kappa Perfect Build as well.

It will smoke anything commercially available including things you've listed. From your experience I'm sure you aware of the capabilities of these subs. And you might even have sources to get them cheap.

using a non MidVQ is a way to reduce cost while not sacrificing too much on performance.

If you need to get some tools. CPO-Bosch has some great deals.

Another more expensive option is a AudioPulse Build. It has incredible power.

If you wanted to explore enlarging the box of the Kappa to get a deeper response. I could give it a go. However I think in a home theater it's usually unecessary. You will need to high pass it at 20hz

I have been away from car audio for a lil while,,, I still lurkaround on the forums though from time to time..

I actually thought about using Image Dynamics IDMAX 10" as duals or a lower line they have.... I will ask my oldbuddies that are still in it..... I will also consider the kappas..

one thing though,,, I sux at cutting wood,,, I was never known to have a good install just good sound... got chewed out by a judge once on how terrible my install was,,, but he liked how it sound... my SQ score was close to everyone else but suffered greatly on install...

You didn't mention a wife to sneak around.

In that case we may need a different plan. You take her out for a romantic evening and we'll bring the new end tables.:D

I vote for dual SVS PB 10 subs!
mind reader,,,, I was just looking at that sub,,,,,

instead of making one purchase for the dual bic h100,,,,, the svs 10 would have to be made months apart......
