Don't Forget to Tip the Garbage Men for XMAS

It's that time of year again where we should all remember the ones that work hard for us but aren't always appreciated. My wife put $20/ea for our two garbage men in an envelope attached to our trash can today. I watched from the window at their reaction and they were estatic. Sadly so few of my neigbors do this. These guys never give me a problem when I throw away old speaker boxes or delivery crates. My thanks go to all that keep our streets clean.

I have to pay $20 a month for a truck to come pick up a single 35 gallon trash can once every two weeks. They get enough of my money. And besides, don't garbage guys make all kinds of dough?

It's the spirit that counts, Cap'n. :p :)

I'm with you. Gene. I give our one guy 10 bucks every Christmas, and he always takes care of extra incidentals we may have to get rid of. And he's always delighted.

Trust me, public servants see little of that money. These guys earn it!

My guy is only required to pick up the one trash can they issue us but he has, on more than one occasion, taken two cans full of trash for me. He'll be getting a little extra from us this year.

My garbage man came up to me a week ago, out of his truck while I was leaving, and asked for money. I always tip, but, asking early is a little ballsey. I gave him a 10, but, he probably would have gotten more if he would have not asked.

I gave my cleaning lady 100 bucks and I'm going to give the mail lady a 20 when I catch her.

I also donate stuff to the veterans association around this time of year, I go through my apartment and find things I don't use or need anymore. This year it was extra easy because I'm moving (so I'll be absent for a few weeks soon!) so I went through everything.

My garbage man makes more than I do and does a piss poor job. I always have to pick up spilled trash from the automated arm that picks up the canister and I watched one day as a ton of trash was spilled out into the street and the trash guy could care less, he just kept on going. Screw him he gets nothing.

I do give the mailman something because he makes sure any package I get is hand delivered to me.

"Why tip someone for a job I’m capable of doing myself? I can deliver food. I can drive a taxi. I can, and do, cut my own hair. I did however, tip my urologist, because I am unable to pulverize my own kidney stones."

I'm not sure if the garbage man and the guy who picks up our recycling is the same guy, but if you break down cardboard boxes and put them NEXT to the recycling bin, they just leave them sitting there! If it isn't directly inside the can, it's like it doesn't exist to them!

Plus we had the lid broken off of our garbage can a few weeks ago, and after waiting a couple of weeks, we ended up calling the garbage company to get another one!! Why did we have to make the effort? We weren't the ones that broke the lid.

Now that I think of it, screw the garbage men!

25/hour isn't that great of pay...

If you think $25 an hour, for PICKING UP GARBAGE, isn't great pay, you're crazy. It takes more skill and training to make burgers at mcdonalds than it does to pick up trash. As a matter of fact, they do that too! And they make what, $6? I think $25 an hour to pick up trash is a ton of money.

My garbage men seem to do a good job but I don't tip them.

On the other hand, if the guy that checks my water meter leaves the lid open one more time, I will chase him down and beat his ***.

At least your guys bother to check yours. Mine apparently never came in the fence to check ours for about six months and were just send out our bill as an estimate. Suffice to say they were about 10,000 gallons off and I haven't had to pay a water bill for the last eight months.

My garbage man has a job easier than Vanna White. He pulls the truck next to my large canister, hits a button and a mechanical arm, clamps the canister, lifts it and dumps it, then places it back on the ground. I mean how tough is that. If trash doesnt fit in the canister, he won't get out and pick it up. You have to call and make arrangements for the trash company to make a special trip and they charge you a special fee to pick that up. So whenever I have something that won't fit, I just go down the street to the local grocery store and dump it in their huge trash bins which are about 20 times the size of my canisters. Screw him, he makes more than I do (and I work in the medical field) and all he does is push a button (and sometimes can't do that right) and if the trash bag gets stuck in the canister, he doesnt care (cause he doesnt check) he just dumps it and leaves it. I also love when he completely forgets to even get our street altogether and all my neighbors have to have their canisters out all week (just in case he remembers he forgot our street). My Chistmas bonus would be to smack him upside his head.

Wow I need to start paying more attention to this.

As for the lazy garbage men stories, I initially had similar issues when I first moved into this neighborhood but after the first xmas that I tipped my guys they literally bend over backwards now. I throw crates, yard trash, speaker boxes, you name it, out there and they take all of it. I'm supposed to have like a 4 box max each time but I rarely keep it that low :)

Well, skills are not whats involved with picking up trash. It's a labor job. Like all labor jobs, they pay well, because it's hard physical work. Add on top of that the speed factor, it is hard strenuous work.

Something tells me you haven't done a whole lot of physical labor before...
