I finally upgraded to a better "high end brand" sub-woofer I ordered a Velodyne VRP-1200 from Buy.com for $202 shipped. My first and only sub:( was the Onkyo sub-woofer that came with a htib(still using the receiver and front right and left speakers but I upgraded center to a polk csi25) I know most of you have way better subs than this but for me I'm sure this sub-woofer will sound like a thousand bucks compared to my Onkyo boomy bass sub which hits a funny 50hz:p and im surprised there still sellinghttp://www.jr.com/onkyo/pe/ONK_SKW204/ this woofer which shouldn't even be called a sub-woofer because it can even dig deep. the VRP-1200 goes below 30 it goes 29Hz:D major improvement from my previous sub.
whats your audiophile opinion on this sub-woofer I couldn't find a pro review of this sub because its so old, I just found customer reviews but what do they know my Onkyo sub got 4 1/2 stars out of 5 from Jr.com! I want pro reviews.

What matters is what you think, and not what others think. If it enhances your HT experience that's all that matters.

I had my VRP 1200 for about a week and its pretty good. The only cons are that once you crank it the back port muffles. another thing that ruins the clean bass listening is that the bass from the sub and my floorstanding speakers penetrait the back of my rearprojection tv and its rumbles. This was an issue before the VRP1200 but now it got worse. you can clearly hear this more on musice than movie. anybody with rear projection tvs had this problem?

Congrats!

It is ALWAYS nice getting new audio stuff. And by the way i am sure it is way better than the Onkyo sub enjoy.

I know most of you have way better subs than this.
Mazer is right. Enjoy yourself. If it makes you feel any better most of the guys with really nice stuff are old and tired. You're probably still young with most of life's wrong decisions still ahead of you.

I think you will have to move that sub to a different spot or move the TV. ;)

Congratulations on your upgrade

Fredhizzle,

Congrats and enjoy your upgrade. And I second what Mazerstevens and Alex2507 say enjoy your systems and don't worry about what others say.

Concenring vibrations, is there anyway you can isolated the TV by placing on a cushioned mat or something that might abosorb some of the vibration?

For just one of the old guys, Ejoy you system!

Alex your right Im only 17 and I am yet to make hard decisions later in life like deciding if I should spend all my dough on subs so I can have as much as subs as mike c:D haha. I ill try to move the sub to see if it reduces the anoying vibrations and what a task that can be godbless you brave souls who move around and calibrate your heavy subwoofers mine is about 45lbs and Im complaining. Subwoofers should come with wheels or something:p so they can easier to move.

"Concenring vibrations, is there anyway you can isolated the TV by placing on a cushioned mat or something that might abosorb some of the vibration?"

do you mean by puting some kind of sound absorbing material on the wall behind it? or directly on the back of the rearprojection

lol. you're young, spend the money on your future ... not subwoofers.

just like all audio upgrades, there's a point of diminishing return.

consider me a dying man spending all his dough before he croaks :D

lol yeah thats true a couple of years ago i was excited to have speakers for my receiver...now im replacing them. what you put in you'll take out eventually consideing technological advances, your income, upgrading something and changing every thing so it can be compatible with your A/v sytem and ETC.

I moved my velo in the corner, it use to be right next to the tv and the viberation of the back of the tv was reduced dramatically.

Its been a week and a half since I got my velodyne vrp-1200 and since then I've been doing some critical listening. I watched movies and listen to alot of music to see how the VRP perfromed. I watched all the matrix movies, which were all phenominal and it had some action packed parts that really fired up my subwoofer there was some scenes that pushed the excursion of the VRP to the max. I listened to mainly hard rock like Nine Inch Nails and Chevelle and Ive come to an agreement that this sub performes better in movies.
As I mentioned above the Vrp doesnt do a good job on providing loud output during movie effects that have really low frequencies. in other words this subwoofer doesn't have good bass excursion you can hear the rear port chuffle. This sub can get loud but not deep, and that is very disapointing because a good sub is suppose to go low and loud. Considering room accoustics affecting sound my living room is about 25by20 with 9ft ceiling with tile floor and my sub is placed in a corner do you think theres to much space and not enough SPL from this woofer to cover my living room?

I definetly think your hopes were a little high for this sub. Did you level match with your mains? What type of bass management are you using?

my hopes were too high.. I thought a high end brand subwoofer would blow me away because I never listened to a (according to my budget an "expensive" subwoofer") I'm thinking of selling it for $250 and save up for a real subwoofer like an svs:D..I can't help it i'm a bass head I want and need the bass, I want it to penetrate my bones lol. I have the receiver's bass management set to sub and mains to small with the bass at 10db. I know you may think it working the mains to hard but my set up is a 2.2 ( the other LFE is the onkyo speaker.I read an a thread before about how a totally different subwoofer might the clarity of the low frequencies but I dont really care because im a bass head and i just want more spl) so the mains get according to the manual 115watts rms to each of my sony SS-f7000 floorstanding speaker. I tried a 5.1 set up but it the towers would distort because of less watts, and the receiver would also heat up quick so more energy is loss to heat.

Sounds like you want an Ultra...:) But have you considered another 1200? Those are decent little subs..and it would be a little more economical.

If you want real bass on a limited budget, you need to DIY. Wmax will tell you the joy of Kappa's and a Behringer Europower. Others will suggest Ed's, JBL's and Dayton's.

yeah I have but I want a subwoofer that can dig deep like in the 25-19hz frequency and adding another vrp1200 would just add more sound pressure. I've made my decision to sell my velo on craigslist but I have not decided on what to buy my savings will determine what im going to buy but im aiming for a $500 dollar sub:D

I registered my velo online do you guys know if I can unregister and hand down the warranty to who ever buys the velodyne? If I can this would really increase the chance of getting my sub to sell quick because this new warranty cover drivers, amplifiers and related electronics purchased on or after January 1, 2007 in the U.S. or Canada. The warranty on drivers is extended from two years to five, the warranty on all amplifiers and electronics has been extended from two years to three years.
their offices are closed for the holidays and they open january 5th, I want to sell asap so if you guys know anything I would appreciate it.

Specifically, the Infinity Kappa Perfect VQ based DIY subs is suggested due to the extremely high linearity of the driver vs. it's cost. It is also very versatile; the motor has several inserts to change it's Q, allowing for use in ANY type of application in the future that you so desire. The driver's most unique characteristic is that it sounds identical at low and high SPL; the sound does not degrade(become loose, boomy, etc.) at moderate to higher SPLs like the overwhelming majority of drivers. The cabinet I specify uses a large cross section folded slot port to prevent compression and turbulence. In a closed room of average size(<2000 cubic feet), corner loaded, the subwoofer can produce nearly 120dB at 20Hz if the amplifier is big enough. Expect more along the lines of 115dB if you use a more limited amplifier, at around 400-500 watts RMS output. If you have a very large room, or do not corner mount the subwoofer, SPL levels will be lower, of course. It is hardly fair to compare retail products to this one; the retail products can not even begin to compare until you spend several times the amount, and even then, only select best of the best retail/commercial products are going to actually compete. This is the lowest cost subwoofer that I recommend for DIY. It results in a transparent device for any quality of system. If more SPL is needed, I recommend a substantially higher level performance of driver such as JL Audio W7, Audio Pulse AXIS/TC Sounds TC3000, etc.; of course, price raises substantially along with these drivers. The increased performance I speak of is not transparency; this would be the same. The increased performance I speak of is excursion and/or power handling whilst remaining linear in order to effect higher SPL.

thats exactly what I want in a subwoofer and thats what true subwoofers should do. Because I am young and inxperienced making a jump to DIY seems overwhelming and it seems like a gamble because I don't know enough to make all the components compatable. I read the whole and longest description I've ever read about a subwoofer...and the SVS pb10-NSD seems to be what I'm looking for. The infinity kappa looks like a good driver they look very well made, what kind of amp are you using on a car subwoofer.
I hope the svs pb10-nsd gives me that unprecedented feeling of satisfying bass that always craved.
