Definitive Tech Speaker Owner's Thread

Hey guys, I've had difficulty finding a CLR 2300 or 2500 in Cherry, but found a pair of cherry 7004's for sale. What's your opinion of getting the towers and using one of my PM700's as a center channel? The only dilemma is that I would now have one PM700 that would not be used, unless I used both for the center channel, which, IMHO, would be overkill.

I think it would be great to get the BP7004 (5.25" midrange) & use the PM700 (5.25" midrange) for the Center Speaker (vertical position).

But please do NOT use BOTH the PM700s as Center speakers as this will cause some serious Comb Filtering and DISTORTION. NO! NO!

Just use ONE PM700 for the front Center Channel. You could use the other PM700 for the Rear Center in a 6.1 system.

Are there any reliable online deftech dealers anyone would recommend? Is the warranty still valid on these purchases?

I believe both digitalcraze & AbtElectronics are authorized dealers, but you might want to call DefTech to confirm.

hey deftechguy, what crossover do you recomend for my 800's? i know they only have 4.5" driver and but whats the lowest you would go with these? right now i have the fronts and center at 100hz and surrounds at 120hz. my onkyo automatic setup set my fronts and center to 150hz but i changed it.

I would set all your ProCinema 800 speakers to 100 Hz for the fronts and surrounds.

How do you tell if you have a blown subwoofer?

I was playing war of the worlds yesterday and thers a part where the pod steps out ground, my sub would rattle at that part. i put something on top so it would stop and it did, but now the whatever i put on top started to rattle. i played the scene over again but this time i noticed the bass output got weaker, i played some other movies and noticed the same thing. did i break something? me playing that scene over and over again, was that a bad thing?

i played some music and the bass sounded muffled, it was like was stuck inside. i heard the bass but very little was coming though.​

i have a pro sub 1000.

I tried calling definitive but they never pick up the phone. it rings 3 times and hangs up.

I've only damaged one set of speakers in my life, but they were little old cheap generic speakers. The result was NO SOUND at all coming from the speakers.

If your subwoofer is producing rattling/buzzing/static/crackling sounds when watching various movies, then I would say that it may be damaged.

I've also heard that if you gently press on the subwoofer cone with your fingers and it makes a static/crackling sound (instead of no sound), then the driver is blown.

I don't think it is a bad thing.

You probably just have a defective subwoofer.

I've this little NHT 10" subwoofer for 12 years (my brother has it now). I've max the heck out of it (loud bass that rattled the walls like crazy) for a long, long time. But it still sounds great after all these years.

No there are no such noises, the only time it rattles is when something is bass heavy. and still thats only sometimes.

but the bass sounds different from what i remember, like i said it still rumbles but its seems like something is missing, its weaker. when playing music its even more obvious, bassy tracks dont sound bassy at all. should i just send it in? any reason why definitive not answering their phone?​

another question, how low does the 1000 actually go? the manual says 18hz.

The ProSub100 wasn't one of Def Techs best creations (I can't say I ever had electrical or mechanical issues with it, but it's output was sorta limited). That series only stood from the great sound the ProSub80 had (it sounds better than the 10" in many ways believe it or not). I could never get the ProSub100 to sound right in my room. The ProSub80 was a fantastic little subwoofer for someone on a budget, it was a plus that it just happened to be small.

Are you talking about the prosub800? the sub1000 sounds amazing in my room(10x12) its just that now something went wrong with the bass output. i going to send it in to see if anything is wrong

and how can something smaller sounds better than a 10"? maby in your room?​

Where to go from here...??

I just got a tremendous deal on a pair of BPVX's and a CLR 2000. I'm very much a newcomer to this hobby and just put together my first system. I had/have a set of Axiom speakers, but I already decided I wanted something a little different and couldn't resist the deal on the Def Techs.

If I stay on the Def Tech path I'd like to target the best models for mains that would complement the BPVX and the CLR 2000, so I'll toss that out for comments.

To complicate things a bit, I recently heard a friend's set of very old, but well-functioning Acoustat ESL's--and loved the sound. New ESL/planar/ribbon speakers seem to be out of my price range for the present, so I'd like to (if it's possible) try to approximate that kind of sound with Def Tech's. See discussion here:

No. Nothing has to be playing when you do that.

Def Tech is one of the companies that only list the "overall" frequency response, which is useless. The actual frequency response needs to have a tolerance of +/-3dB.

The ProSub1000 has the actual anechoic frequency response of 29 Hz - 150 Hz +/-3dB.

First, check all the cables and make sure nothing is LOOSE.

Then do a channel level calibration with a SPL meter to make sure ALL channel levels are matched.

For example, on my system all channels (Subwoofer, Front Left, Front Right, Center, Surround Left, Surround Right) are set to 65 dB, Weight C, Slow Response on the digital Galaxy SPL sound meter.

If all cables are tight and all channels are level matched and you still have this issue, then I would bring it in.

The rule of thumb is to match the driver sizes (1" tweeters and 6.5" woofer/midrange) and brand name. It's not critical, but recommend by most.

The Def Tech BP10, BP7001, or BP7000 and older BP20 or BP30 or BP3000 would be a good match for the CLR2000.

Well i pushed the woofer in and out and it moved freely with no noises.

yes all my setting are correct, i use audyssey, it calibrates my system for me. and before anyone says anything about audyssey, i've been using it for 8 months now and its been fine. i dont have an spl meter but audyssey does that for you anyway. again, before anyone comments about that, like i said its been sounding fine for 8 months, its not that.​

its definitely my sub.....i put on a movie today and it was boomy like crazy, it sounded nasty. when i wached casino rayale i always had a little boom yea, my room is square and i dont have any treatments, but this was bad! it never sounded like this before. infact audyssey fixed the boom i was having with that movie and others.

the scene near the end when the building is crumbling down, that was the the worst. it didn't sound like a crumbling building, that whole scene was boomy and distorted. never sounded like that before.​
