Welcome to the forum!

I'm looking into your equipment, but I'm about to eat dinner, so it'll be a few minutes. I do have some questions for you. What sort of budget do you have for new equipment? How big of a room do you have this system in?

Thanks!

Adam

10 ft(the viewing distance from where i sit to the tv) x 12 ft (the sides of the room) and as far as budget is concerned, ummmmm....i really have no set budget just as long as its not outrageous.

Lay your worries about bashing down. It's strictly forbidden. :)

Adam's request for a budget really is the first thing you have to decide on. To me it seems like you need:

1. 5 speakers
2. Sub woofer
3. Receiver
4. DVD Player

Here's some reading you can do on various recommended systems:

They don't recommend what I have.  :D
There is a ton of good info in the links in that blue bar about 1/4 of the way down the page in AV University etc... and it's put together by people who are interested in facts not fiction.

When you do become interested in a certain item you can go to the appropriate sub-forum and try out the search feature to see what's been said about it. Also there are stickies at the tops of those sub-forums with more good info. Nothing wrong with posting either. :)

pizza pizaz?

$5,000 ? That'll work. :) I'd say to start looking around for speakers in the $2,000 range. The PS3 is to my understanding the way to go.

The reason I said 5 speakers is because I assumed that you, like me, have your seating position up against a wall making 7.1 surround not really feasible. The real smart guys should be along with suggestions in that price range. If I were in your place I would spend a bunch of time reading up on speakers and readying myself for the audition/spec's & room treatments controversy. ;)

Edit: Regarding the forum here, you'll probably get more responses in the Loudspeaker sub-forum as the guys who are into that peak in there more frequently:

lol i seriously don't know how "pizza pizaz" got there but ummm... when searching for speakers, should i search for ones that come altogether like all six of the speakers in one box (im guessing it called "out of the box" or something like that) or should i buy each speaker separately? what brand should i look into?

Wow, it's amazing what 14 hours can do. I was going to try to get it all set up with the equipment that you had...but, $5000?! Holy cow. No reason to skimp with that kind of budget. :)

Pizza, pizza! Reminds me of my family getting the double pizza deal from Little Ceasars when I was growing up. Mmmmm.

lol yep i plan to get the best i can out of my gaming/movie experiences . for the record i would have to have the speakers with stand due to the fact that this is an apartment and we can't put holes in the wall. if the budget money is suppose to include the tv and the surround sound stuff then we should scratch the tv off the list cause i already have that. so....what ideas do u have for me?

You're going to have to do that reading and auditioning thing. :)

To get you started I have copied the link from AH Reviews:

http://www.audioholics.com/reviews/speakers

When you get through all that reading that's been offered in this thread you will have more of an idea of what will work for you. Size, appearance, sound, WAF all play into it. The reading will reveal more brand and model choices than you can shake a stick at. Should you not care to do all that you can get what I have listed in my sig or get what Adam has listed in his sig. We're reasonably happy with the sound. His sub woofer choice is first rate. Now he needs a color TV. :D

Alex made very good recommendations, both in terms of a system and in how to go about researching what you want. There are lots of options out there to chose from. The one thing that I'd change is that I wouldn't recommend buying a DVD player now that we know that you have a PS3 - because it can play DVDs, too.

Don't rush out and buy a receiver before considering speakers. Some speakers have nominal impedances that are 4 ohms (or lower), and some receivers are not designed to handle those types of loads. For most people and most speakers, you could go get any number of receivers in the $300-$500 range and be just fine. However, it is something to consider.

For a subwoofer, I'm very happy with my sub from SVS (svsound.com). They are definitely not the only game in town, though. There are many models of sub available at local stores, as well as from internet stores and internet-direct stores. SVS is my favorite because of my personal experience, but many here have subs from other brands that they really like.

EDIT: I see that Alex got a reply in while I was typing. Color TV - nice. :D I do need to step into this century on that, for sure.
