j, in case you might still be riding the fence, a big +1 to what rmk and aberkowitz said. The content is top notch. I sort of wish I was in your position having not seen it, so that I can see it for the first time again.
The only thing I worry about is PQ on the BD transfer (the HD-DVD was not spectacular, and the DVD was simply poor IMO). However, for someone who hasn't seen it yet, scroo it, watch it, and be immersed!
To add to what aberkowitz said, I enjoyed how different aspects of the before-and-after of war were portrayed. Especially the, ummm, for lack of better words, "detente" after the war was over. Slightly eerie feeling of listless/bored/useless that I got from the characters. Pretty cool, I don't see that too often in war movies...
