Transformers BD Sucked

Okay, so the last 4 BDs I watched included Dark City, The Bank Job, Prison Break Season 3, and Heroes Season 2. I thought all of these had outstanding sound quality. Crystal clear sound, awesome dialogue from center channel, awesome bass.

Then tonight I just watched Transformers BD. My impression: What the Heck?

Just like the HD DVD version, it had plenty of scenes with massive subsonic bass. But a lot of bass doesn't make it great IMO. Like the HD DVD, I thought the overall sound quality was "compressed" or something. The dialogue was not as crystal clear as the other movies I recently watched.

And there were still scenes that just didn't make audible sense to me. Like when Blackout attacked the military base in the beginning. That huge blast he made that shattered the glass? Was there suppose to be some massive outrageous bass to accompany that:confused:

So I guess I'll be the first person to say that I thought Transformers BD sucked on the sound quality.

I think that shockwave that blackout does is an 8Hz or below tone. Unless your sub can hit that low it's going to sound pretty underwhelming.

Seriously, I have no life.

That's an understatement.:D
I doubt even Nousaine's sub will do that 8 Hz.

8 Hz?

You mean "FEEL"?

I thought anything below 15 Hz can only be felt, not heard?

So who can we thank for this 8 Hz sound?

Michael Bay?

I have never heard of any sub doing 8 Hz before.

No wonder my subwoofer felt a little constipated on that Blackout's shockwave scene! It just felt like it was doing something, but I just couldn't hear anything.

And besides that issue, the Transformers dialogue doesn't seem to be as clear as "Pan's Labyrinth", "Prison Break", "Heroes", etc.

It just amazes me how I get such awesome sound quality from even TV flicks like Prison Break and Heroes, and yet get underwhelming sound quality from super expensive movies like Transformers.

My conclusion is that it is not about TrueHD vs. DTS-HD MA vs. PCM vs DD+ vs DTS. It's how the sound was designed & recorded.

I have to say I wasn't blown away by the audio either. There was some decent bass and good overall use of surrounds, but the audio wasn't as good as I was expecting. The movie itself isn't terrible however, and was a little better than I expected. It is a typical Michael Bay movie IMO.

I mean, sure we may have extremely high expectations - kind of like "The Dark Knight"?:D

The first thing I will notice with an awesome soundtrack is the clarity of the sound. I expect the dialogue to be extremely clear. When things go flying all over creation, I expect to clearly hear those sounds, not just a bunch of loud noise. And I definitely don't need 8 Hz soundwaves that I can't hear!

I don't know. I thought it just sounded a little "compressed". I give up on this movie. There are a lot of better sounding movies out there IMO.

I thought that the regular DVD version sounded great. It's entirely possible that my standards are lower, as I don't have HD-DVD or Blu-ray. I could hear all of the dialogue just fine. If you haven't, perhaps give the regular DVD a try?

I don't know. Maybe I just need to crank that Center channel level way up just for some movies?

Maybe this movie just has way too much ambient sounds to compete with the center channel.

But I will take your advice and check out the SD DVD version.

...OR, maybe it will just sound better when I watch it on my new Optoma HD81-LV projector when it comes TODAY.:D

AcuDefTechGuy could try a whole different sound setup, just for kicks. I Just hope his name doesn't turn into PsbNadFanBoy.:D

This is the best blu-ray yet. Even better than my old favorite Cars.

I don't mean to doubt you or anything, but what kind of system do you have?

Maybe I should get your system.:D

Yeah, too bad Cars was such a lousy movie, because it looks great. Ratatouille was much better on every level, including the fact that it looks even better.

Sorry, but I didn't think the video was among the best I've seen on Transformers, and as mentioned previously, the audio is pretty good, not great.

I purposely missed Wall-E in the theater. Should be here soon-ish? :D And Finding Nemo in the spring? :D Woo-Hoo!

I heard a lot of mixed reviews about Wall-E. I don't really go see Pixar movies in the theater because there are generally way too many small kids. Yep, can't wait for Nemo.
