Sony to drop the price of BD players by $100

HD Guru is reporting that Sony will drop the price of their BDP-S350 Blu-ray player $100 and sell it for $300 beginning in September. As a result, manufacturer Funai plans to drop the price of its players (under the Philips/Magnavox, Insignia and Sylvania brands) down $50 to $250 in order to stay competitive in the market. Sony also plans to release a higher end Blu-ray player, the BDP-S550 for $399 beginning in October.

Isn't OPPO supposed to be releasing a BDP? It wouldn't suprise me if they drop a BR bomb on the market....they seem to have a knack for that.

My local Movie Gallery does not even have a Blu Ray disc to rent. So what is my point? Just that this is still very cutting edge regardless of how many of us there are. We are not main stream; we are the first wave ashore. Granted, it is taking us a long time to beach, but we are still coming.

The main attack force will be beaching in the next couple of years and your price will be met. At this point I am pleased and surprised that it is coming down so quickly.

For 2 years and 2 months into the format's life, $299 is just fine.

There weren't very many $199 DVD players in May 1999.

That is the MSRP, street prices will be lower = GOOD DEALS come holiday season. That also means other manufacturers, as can already be seen with Funai's announcement also, will also be likely to drop their prices. I still paid less for the Insignia than the price drop

Yes, Oppo has stated they have a BD player in the works, unfortunately, no ETA. Could be by the holidays, could be longer. I'm sure they will offer a great value for a lot of performance.

I've waited long enough and that price drop would encourage to get off the fence. Currently the Sony BPD-350 retails for $399.00 here and with the suggested price drop and the pending October release of the 550, I feel that $400.00 would be a fair asking price for that unit. Heh.. I don't really have a choice because I refuse to change my receiver and any lateral replacment would be 3x's the cost of any decent BRP.
PS: I do hope OPPO Digital steps up soon and gives us a hint!

My BB has a whole BD section. Pretty darn good selection too. I like it, because the BD's are usually on a bit of a wait on the site, but often I can find them on the wall at my local store. Works out well for me because I guess not too many people are renting BD's yet.

You can find some GREAT deals on BD's. I just got Afro Samurai and V for Vendetta from Amazon for about $15 each!!! I also got Cloverfield from DeepDiscount.com for $15, but their shipping was HELLA slow. Amazon tends to get discs to me in one day!!

I got Afro Samurai for $12 and V for Vendetta is $13.99 at Frys, but I got it for $13.50 from Warner Online. Deepdiscount got me my discs fairly typical - about a week. Warner was a little slow also. Both my BB and my Hollywood have decent selections on BD though since they are the only ones near by, sometimes it is harder to get new titles there.
