My new HSU VTF-3 Mk3 is in the corner. On top below the center channel is the Marantz. I cobbled together that shelf out of scraps I has in the basement. This setup is temporary. I'm trying to decide what I want for a new rack. I also plan to buy decent speaker stands after I upgrade my monitors.

Your fronts should be at seated ear height and they look a little low in the picture. Until you get your stands, you might want to angle them up in front a little. I just used a stack of pennys to get the right aim and then wrapped the pennys in black electrical tape to look like feet. You have a great start.

Looks like you are well on your way to nirvana. A nice AV rack, some speaker stands, universal remote, surge protector, BluRay, HDMI switcher, acoustic panels, wire management.................well, you get the idea. Upgrades never seem to end.

Keep us posted on your progress.

P.S. Sanus makes some good racks at a fair price. Just make sure you keep your speakers at ear level, no matter what you decide to buy.

The tweeters are at ear height. My couch is really broken in. :)

The screen is high. I centered the wall bracket at 5' which puts the center if the screen a few inches higher. I'm still deciding if it's worth it to move it. I was thinking about dropping it 6-8 inches and maybe moving it over one stud to the right.

At least with the center channel up on that shelf, movie dialogue sounds more like it's coming from the screen.

Jim, a couple of things to consider. I don't know if they will work with your tastes, budget, room size, etc.

The ideal setup in front would be to have 3 identical speakers, at identical height. The present higher mounting of the tv will probably allow this. If I was given this setup, that is what I would personally be aiming for.

Where does the rack go then? Mine is off to the side, and I use a very affordable and long Mono HDMI. Of course, if you don't yet have a converting receiver, long runs of multiple cables are not so cool. I do not recollect which pieces you are upgrading, or when.

One nice thing about having a rack off to the side is to not have all those LEDs possibly distracting from the viewing experience. (When my stuff was up front, I liberally used window tint and electrical tape). I use Studio Tech modular rack, and I think its a great value at $200. You can add or take away racks to be future proofed, with options of 7" or 9" shelving. I stuck my HD and BD player on the same shelf, but used some vinyl feet to give a tiny bit more ventilation between the two.

What do you think about 3 identical speakers up front? ;) You'll be as matched as humanly possible, and will not suffer from lobing issues as with the great majority of "center speakers". Thought it depends on the speakers you choose, my guess is that most bookshleves not only cost less than most center speakers, they perform better as well. If you can pull off what Im talking about, it might look very cool!! (operative word = might*).

I've thought about using three identical speakers but a lot of the speakers I like are only sold in pairs. I could shove one in the back and run 6.1. I was also thinking about Ascend Sierras for my next speakers. They have a center which is just a bookshelf with the tweeter mounted sideways. Apparently they will sell you a vertical center if you ask.

I'm aware of the limitations of many center channel speakers including lobing and slight mismatches in sensitivity and/or resistance. Most of the time, it's just me so it's not really an issue but it would be nice to have a cleaner dispersion in case I have friends over.

I've thought about moving stuff to the side but that adds more complications. I don't really have any good spots because there is either a window, a door or a speaker everywhere that's not under the TV. Besides, that's where my power system is.

Well, another BIG bonus you may benefit from by not having the rack between the speakers is improved stereo imaging. Some people have said the best tweak/improvement they ever made was removing the components in-between.

Yeah, I always assumed that ID brands would make it easier to get that single bookshelf. I have seen single bookshelves sold on the classifieds (and yes they were used as a center speaker). Long shot, but you can always try selling it to someone else in a very similar situation. Lastly, sometimes a pair of bookshelves is the same cost as one matching center speaker, anyways. 6.1 is nice, or you can keep it for spare parts/speaker if you ever blow anything.

When you have the three identical speakers setup, and go on to win the lottery, you can install an AT screen to drop over the rig ... :p

I'm probably just being redundant. I believe you when you say it wouldn't be easy. I just quickly measured my rack, at its less than 2 ft wide, and about 18.5 in deep. GREAT VALUE, IMO.

What do you exactly mean by "power system"?

oh ya, I've read that about the Ascends. For truly ideal performance, its also the vertical shape of the cabinet that is desired for ideal dispersion, from what I have read. Who knows how much of an effect it has though... Welp, you know my vote is, gl man. :)

By power system, I mean a Monster power conditioner that looks like a power strip on roids.

I'm thinking I may be able to put an audio rack between the right speaker and the door. That would open up some possibilities. Then I would have to figure out what to do with my center channel. I like it close to the TV. Maybe I could make a shelf for it and mount that on the wall. That may give me some cable management possibilities. Hmmm.

I could also consider floorstanders if they had some room to breathe. I guess I need to think about that. Thanks, jostenmeat.

nice, the equipment is what makes SQ ... racks and stands make Eye Candy ... when the lights go out (for movie watching) it's the equipment that matters :)

You may have seen my thread about the new rack in the DIY forum. It was jostenmeat's post that got me thinking about moving the gear out from between the mains.

Next year I hope to upgrade my speakers and add some bass traps.

It is all about the equipment...But

Yes, for me it is all about the equipment BUT for my wife it's all about organization and finding an entertainment center to hide it.
