You guys were right...again.

I've keep reading how a lot of you guys say that accoustics make a huge difference. Well, I haven't been able to spend the time or engery to treat my room, but yesterday I tried something different. I moved my couch about 2 feet closer to the tv.

The only thing I can say is WOAH. The surrounds are a lot more encompassing now, and seem less directional. I think I had the surrounds too close before (2 feet from listening position), and the fact that they were tower speakers didn't help either.

The other thing this helped with was smooth out the bass. Seems like there less of a dip in my midbass range by sitting in the new position.

Oh, and I finally found a copy of Master and Commander. The canon scene is insane. Tons of quality bass, great use of surrounds. I actually got fooled into thinking that someone was upstairs running around, then quickly realized it was the movie.

Any crackles?***hee***hee:D

I bet "Master & Commander" on blu-ray with TrueHD, LPCM, or DTS-MA would sound so awesome. I can't wait -- they keep on postponing it.

Oh, and pretty soon you will need a new receiver or the $700 Emotiva LMC-2 pre-pros to experience all these new HD soundtracks!

LOL! No crackles with this movie at all. I've come to the realization that the crackles are with the disc, and not from my system. So far so good!

Although, I think one of my fronts are messed up. I hear a buzz come from it once in a while - like something is loose inside. This happens more frequently when I'm listening to piano recordings (not limited to only one disc). But that's besides the point. Warranty will cover this.

A new receiver? YEESSSSSSS SIR!!!! Any suggestions? I like the features of the top of the line Onkyo, but I dont' like the way it looks. In terms of looks, the Denon is sleek, but it's a bit overpriced.

Yamaha? Even sleeker (sp?) -- reffering to the v1800 here. And I actually like their yellow/orange display. Less attractive to the eye when you're watching a move. I even dim it (-4).

I think you need an Anthem MCA20 (to make 5.1) plus the upcoming Emotiva LMC-2 (ETA March ~ $700). How much would a pre-owned MCA20 run these days?

Yeah, I think the Denon 4308 looks better than the Onkyo 875 too, but I think the best internet price on both of those are around $1,200.

WOW, no wonder you had such a great result or a poor environment before. :D 2ft from a speaker is
Are you able to test a further distance from those speakers, or room just too small.

Well, I'm only sitting 4 feet from my surround speakers, but 11 feet from the fronts.

I think a preowned MCA20 would be around $500 or so. I'd rather not have to go with separates as the AVR would simply be powering the surrounds and I'll be able to go 7.1 without hassle either.

$1200 for the 4308? That's dirt cheap. Up in Canada, it's around $2700 MSRP! I wonder if I can get it shipped here?

As for distance to speakers, I'm about 4 feet from the surrounds and 9 feet from the fronts/center. One day I'll organize everything so I can get it to as equidistant as possible.

Oh, maybe they went up in price on the Denon ($1,800), but the Onkyo 875 is still cheap @ $1,155:

Yeah, for about 1 minute there, I had this crazy thought going through my mind of selling all my separates and just getting the Denon 4308 too for $1,800!

But then I realized that I was crazy, and I just didn't want to be like most people.:eek:
