I've keep reading how a lot of you guys say that accoustics make a huge difference. Well, I haven't been able to spend the time or engery to treat my room, but yesterday I tried something different. I moved my couch about 2 feet closer to the tv.
The only thing I can say is WOAH. The surrounds are a lot more encompassing now, and seem less directional. I think I had the surrounds too close before (2 feet from listening position), and the fact that they were tower speakers didn't help either.
The other thing this helped with was smooth out the bass. Seems like there less of a dip in my midbass range by sitting in the new position.
Oh, and I finally found a copy of Master and Commander. The canon scene is insane. Tons of quality bass, great use of surrounds. I actually got fooled into thinking that someone was upstairs running around, then quickly realized it was the movie.
