I agree - it's been nice to get 20 pages into this and not be at each other's throats too. Politics always brings out the beast in people. This is what I would call a good, spirited, intelligent debate.
Yes, Thank you, guys!
It was a one of the better threads, in a long time.

Seriously, I have no life.
Everyone is always concerned about our children right? Well isn't better that we dealt with it now instead of leaving it for them to deal with later?
Sheer speculation that they would have had to. And, perhaps, if that would have been a reality, perhaps the rest of the world would be on their side?

Well Vietnam was about "containment" and "policing" rather than winning, that policy was evident from the beginning when the word "containment" started to float in the press in the mid-60s, the majority of Americans didn't know where Vietnam was, but they knew that communism was involved, the mistake in Vietnam was simple. They didn't let the professionals do their jobs (The Armed Forces), instead politicos and their egos tried to play arm chair generals. We could have taken Vietnam, but that was never the political intent. Rather it became formulaic: threaten, appease, threaten, appease, bombing campaign (linebackers I & II), appease (Paris Accords) which ended in capitulation. That is Vietnam in a nutshell. This is the same mind set that we have in Washington now. There isn't a "let's get it done and done right" attitude anymore, now its "well what will the press say, what will the polls say, what will Letterman, Leno and Oprah say.....who cares. We've become a bunch of sissies, our president (which I voted for) is a sissy, his cabinet is deplorable, we need a real STRONG leader willing to overlook his popularity poll and do what's right for this country. There hasn't been quality leadership in this country since 1988, that's 20 years!
That was about the fear of the Domino principle. But then, the Gulf of Tonkin hoax is what got us in deep.

Well that is the part that is up for debate. I submit as do others that she and others like her, Reid, Murtha, Kerry, etc. have committed a crime against this country. All that is needed is someone with the courage to take it further. That is the problem with this country. We have very few left with courage. They are all off fighting in Iraq or Afghanistan.
You mean we have few who would take over and become dictators, absolute rulers? Summary execution for speaking out? Why now, plenty on this planet who would and are doing that now, one more to the scorecard.

Pretty sad really. When a country has to debate things like what to do with convicted child molesters you know we have a problem.
You are right. No need to debate anything. Let there be absolute power in office. Model it after the one we kicked out in the East.

The Domino Effect was a tangible and justifiable fear back then. Eastern Europe, China, Cuba, North Korea, rumblings in South America. So the Vietnam "war" was about containing any more dominos from falling. Tonkin was used to kick start the "containment" process.
