Surround Sound Help

Hello,

I'm sure you guys hear this a lot, but I know nothing surround sound. and I need a little help.

I have the following:

TV: LVM-42W2 - www dot westinghousedigital dot com/details.aspx?itemnum=44
XBOX HD-DVD - www dot xbox. dot om/en-US/hardware/x/xbox360hddvdplayer/
Explorer 8300HD - www dot scientificatlanta dot com/products/consumers/new_explorer8300HD.htm
MythTV box via VGA

My goal is to have all of the above (with the possible exception of the myth box) to have surround sound.

Q1: I would like a surround sound system all in black, with tall speakers (that I can place on the floor with no stand) and to have matching rear "wireless" speakers in the back. I can not find any - anyone know where to get this? If I can not get this without the DVD player, I'll simply pick it up. I like how this looks www dot vanns dot com/shop/servlet/item/features/501899906?v_c=BizRate will it work with all the above? Could I "piece" a system together?

Q2: I have a DVD player already... Why do all these packages come with standard DVD players? Can I just get a receiver and speakers?!

Q3: I read that the 360 HD-DVD player has "optical out" for surround sound, but they look like regular component (red and white) outs? I have the following cables - www dot xbox dot com/en-US/hardware/x/xbox360vgahdcable/ Are these in fact "optical" cables? I thought optical looked different. Is this the best possible cables for the 360? (I have no HDMI out on my ver)

Q4: My DVR box (explorer) is connected to my TV (monitor) via HDMI, if I use the audio out on my TV to my surround system, will that be true "surround sound" once it hits the box? Like, does it degrade the quality? There site says ".....or you can use them to optimize the center field of your existing surround sound system. Convenient switched stereo audio outputs allow the ultimate flexibility for external receivers and surround-sound processors." so this brings up another question; Can I simply just use my TV for all my components? Any cons to this?

..Help!

TIA

P.S. I had to edit the links as I do not have 5 posts yet - sorry!

Avoid packages. Go listen to some speakers and get an idea of the sound you are looking for.

Sonic attribute come first. It is not an exercise in interior design.

You need to connect your peripherals to a receiver or audio visual preamp. In the latter case you will need separate amps. The receiver or preamp outputs to the TV.

For radio surrounds I recommend KEF.

I can't figure out your links. But you don't seem to be going about this in a practical or logical way.

My links has the word "dot" vs "." as I am not allowed to provide HTML links. It's a limit for new accounts under 5 posts.

You are right - I know this forum is not about interior design, but it is important to some.

I have been doing some reading - This scene is crazier than I thought.

I am not looking for a HDMI switching receiver under $500. Yamaha has a whole slew of products that I am trying to figure them all out. 5.1 vs 7.1, network ready, HDMI, aaahh!.. Do you know of any receivers that support HDMI for my DVR, and component for my 360 for under 500? Please excuse my ignorance, but I would guess HDMI would go from my DVR, to this receiver, then a seconday HDMI cable from the receiver to my TV?

No and Yes.
Well, I found this for a little under 500 on vanns and amazon - http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/productdetail.html?CNTID=547398&CTID=5000300&ATRID=1020&DETYP=ATTRIBUTE

Mixed reviews though, I see some are having issues with HDMI components not working too well with it. I see some other threads on this boards on other, high end receivers having the same issue. This is frustrating.

Since my xbox 360 and DVR both have an optical out, I think I am going to go with Yamaha RX-N600 Digital Network-Ready Home Theater Receiver as it has 3 optical inputs. And it has a whole bunch a cool features. http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/productdetail.html?CNTID=451033&CTID=5000300&ATRID=1020&DETYP=ATTRIBUTE

I am going to see if I can listen to these in a store tomorrow - but if I can't beat these below prices, I may just buy them all online...

$299 Shipped: Yamaha RX-N600
$80 Sony-SS-CR3000 (center and rear speakers ) http://www.amazon.com/Sony-SS-CR3000-Channel-Speaker-Package/dp/B000OG88NQ/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1197875292&sr=1-1
$193 Sony SSF-6000 Floor Standing 4-way Speaker Pair (2 front) http://www.amazon.com/Sony-SSF-6000-Floor-Standing-Speaker/dp/B000OG4E20/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1197875516&sr=8-1
$110 Rocket Fish wireless kit for rear speakers http://www.rocketfishproducts.com/pc-36-5-rocketfish-wireless-rear-speaker-kit.aspx
$78 Yamaha YSTSW012 8" http://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-YSTSW012-Front-Firing-Active-Subwoofer/dp/B000TQ4D8K/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1197875821&sr=1-6

Total = $760

Am I way over my head - should I just get one of these home theater packages? Is this particular setup better than one of these average 400-500 packages? Also, is it bad to mix brands of speakers like Sony and Yamaha?

TIA

Is ~$800 what you want your budget to be?

In any event, as there are better choices than Sony for speakers, I suggest these with this center channel, or these which are quite good speakers, and with some modifications, are very good speakers with this center channel. Or, these with some speakers stands.

Polk, JBL, Athena, BIC and Internet direct manufactures, like Ascend , AV123, Aperion, and Axiom, also are worth looking into if you want more choices.

But even if you want to stay with the Sony speakers, I must recommend a different sub. One of the Dayton subs from here if you're on a budget, if not, Hsu or if size is no option, and you want a lot of extension SVS or Epik. Or if you're handy, it is possible to build your own subwoofer.

If you want suggestions, or more information on something, don't hesitate to ask. :)

If you want the simplicity, but a home theater in a box will not, in any way, have the sound quality or adaptability of buying the components separately.

It should be, but you can do better. :)
Also, is it bad to mix brands of speakers like Sony and Yamaha?
It depends, as long as the front speakers (i.e. left, right, and center) are from the same manufacture and model line, the other speakers can be from anyone.

Receiver options

Check out the Yamaha RX-V661 and Onkyo 605 receivers for <$400 from authorized online dealers.

If your total budget is <$800 and small speaker size and wireless rear speakers are top priorities, a HTIB system might not be a bad option.

Otherwise, for a better quality system consider starting with a good receiver and 2.0 or 2.1 speakers (left, right channels and sub). You can add the surround channels later when budget allows. It is pretty easy to route speaker wire under base boards for the surrounds. In-ceiling speakers are another un-obtrusive option for surrounds speakers.

Well, you guys may not like this - but I think I am going to do it. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8504692&type=product&id=1186004964722

Here is the manual on the receiver that was impossible to find - http://www.yamaha.ca/av/PDFs/Receivers/2007_models/HTR6050_Manual.pdf

I just listened to this at best buy, and heard some good reviews from others in my spot.. Coincidently, it was actually the "look" I was going for too. But, I DID enjoy the sound though..

Once I move out of my apartment complex, I think I'll spend the real money on this so I can enjoy it more. My neighbor hates me already.

I thought this was going to be my last post, but I think I just picked up another hobby...

You guys are extremely knowledgeable and helpful!

Thanks
