I’m looking to upgrade my entry level Klipsch R12SW to a great sub in the sub $1000 range. All of my research points me to the SVS PB 1000 Pro. Great reviews, great specs and currently $799. Am I looking in the right direction? Are there any clearly better options out there that I should consider? This novice, budding audiophile thanks you in advance!

I am not sure I woudl go so far as to say that it is better performing. The Speedwoofer 12S has more output below 25Hz, and the PB-1000 Pro has more output above 25Hz. The 12s is a deeper digging sub but the PB-1000 Pro is a punchier sub. Some people will be happier with the former, some people will be happier with the latter.

That is such good advice. It is marketers again. MY F3 is lower than your F3. This nonsense has caused the use of extended bass alignments and that on the whole is a BAD thing. The reason is that it gives you less output above F3 as the fall off starts higher. In addition the ass quality is poorer.

I very, very seldom design a sub using an extended bass alignment. That is not the way to go. Can I just say one more time that I have a visceral dislike of marketers.

Thank you. I’m here for the great advice. I have never heard of the Speedwoofer 12S. I will certainly research it. The following is a 25 minute later addendum. I’ve read 5 reviews pertaining to the SW12S. The authors of the reviews are EXTREMELY impressed with the performance of this product. From what I’ve read, this sub is certainly on par with the SVS PB1000 Pro. Either of these products would be a wise choice for an “Enthusiast” like myself. I thank you.

I have a pair of SVS SB 1000 Pros in my 2.2 system And they sound excellent. The app makes it very easy to control the sub from my iPad or iPhone including the volume. You get 45 days after buying to try and return for free if you’re not satisfied. SVS also has excellent customer service before and even after the sale. You can call and talk to someone if you have issues. I also have the RSL Speedwoofer 10E in another system. It’s a step down but it’s also 1/2 the price of the SVS. If you’re interested in the SVS I suggest you contact them. They have a lot of sub options. Tell them about your setup and what you’re looking for and decide on the best Option for you.

Thank you. The SB1000 Pro and PB1000 Pro are both excellent options and hard to beat in the sub $800 category. I prefer the dual ported PB1000 though the SB1000 remains a close second. I’m Amazon price watching both on camelcamelcamel.com at $600 and $500 respectively. When one or the other reaches that point, I won’t be able to resist.

The Hsu Research VT-2 mk5 and Monoprice Monolith M-12 certainly deserve consideration in this segment. They are at least as powerful as the PB-1000 Pro or RSL Speedwoofer 12S if not moreso.
Wow! That VT-2 mk5 is a BEAST! I‘m blown away by the specs, reviews, as well as the warranty. I would agree with you. It ranks right up there with the PB10O0 Pro and on top I that, it’s $100 cheaper! Me likey! Your recommendation now occupies Pole Position! Thank you Sir! I am loving this forum!

You need to add shipping to the HSU, it comes out about the same.

Based on your own testing the RSL compresses less, has less distortion and lower group delay. The build quality looks to be better including the cast driver basket. Just seems to be the better overall product including the HSU.

You are correct. Free Shipping for the SVS. This is a VERY difficult decision between the PB10O0 Pro and the Hsu Research VT-2 mk5. Both are incredible in the performance, value and warranty realms. The reviews are STELLAR for each. I am certainly getting my money’s worth from this knowledge packed forum! Thank you all for the input! Please keep it coming!

Imo, the HSU is much better value than the pb1000. The only place imo that svs is better is customer service. They are truly second to none(although RSL is close IME). My problem though, is that their great CS is baked into the premium of their products. Personally, I don’t want to pay for everybody else’s free shipping, and replacement amplifiers. FWIW, I am an svs owner, so don’t think I’m just hating on them, or anybody’s subs that happen to be theirs.
I’m just not their customer anymore. I don’t need the app, and bill of rights etc, and I feel there’s much better performance for the dollar with other companies.
However as a noob, svs is very appealing and may very well be the best option for you.
My window shopping includes Rythmik, PSA(the owner cofounded svs), HSU, monolith, starke, arendal, paradigm and of course RSL.
Just bringing a different perspective here. Truthfully, every sub mentioned will be an upgrade in every way, so you really can’t go wrong.

Your thoughts on the Hsu vs the Speedwoofer12S! In error, I left it out of the conversation! The Speedwoofer12S should clearly be a high ranking contender for anyone shopping in the under $1000 subwoofer range.

Well for one thing, I’m a proponent of multiple subwoofers. So normally I’d recommend getting the most expensive one you can afford now, and then a second further down the road when you can. Sometimes that’s right away, but many of us have a budget. The two above, are pretty close iirc, but I like the rsl here.
However, the new tn-1 from HSU looks like a worthy upgrade to both, and it’s not ridiculously more expensive. Buy once, cry once. It’s hard sometimes to swallow the pill, but speaking from experience, it’s better to do it that way rather than spend more money, on lesser subs in having to upgrade them later when you find out you just want moar!!!

In my case, budget is not a factor. This is because I’ve always lived well below my means. I believe in purchasing wisely and getting the most bang for the buck at reasonable cost. This is why $1000 is my cutoff for a subwoofer. I KNOW a great subwoofer can be found for under $1000. My ranking of the final contenders for my consideration from what I’ve gleaned from this forum, YouTube reviews and reviews in general are as follows. #1. RSL SPEEDWOOFER 12S, #2. Hsu Research VT-2 mk5, and #3. SVS PB1000 PRO. Once I make my final purchase, you guys will be the first to know! Thank you very much for your input! My system would be well served by any of the final contenders. This forum ROCKS!

Well Folks, I pulled the trigger! I ordered the RSL Speedwoofer 12S minutes ago! I look forward to the arrival of The Beast! My brother will be gifted my Klipsch R-12SW. Thank you all for your input. It was a tough decision! It came down the the Speedwoofer 12S and the Hsu Research VTF-2 mk5. IMO the RSL offering barely ekes out the win. I hope that I made the right decision!

You made a great decision.
All RSL products are some of the best made and best sounding speakers you can buy.
Their customer service is personal and prompt.
You get your moneys worth with them...always.

They truly are a down home company that places customer satisfaction over all else.
No huge overheads and profit margins.
You won't see them running half-off sales like Klipsch and others do.

Coming soon will be the replacements for the CG5/25 speaker line.
(they have been without their premiere speaker line for a while now)

Good advice...when you get the 12S, don't use the remote to turn it off and on...let your AVR do the sensing.
If you happen to use the remote for power, unplug the sub for a while to get back to auto-on.
There has been a bit of confusion over this from new owners.

You can see by my signature I am a big RSL fan...

Thank you for the vote of confidence, and my receiver will definitely be used to power The Beast ON and OFF! The remote will get very little use, at least that is my initial plan.
