Are audiophiles the most gullable of hobbyists

Did you ever find one of those Bluridge BR-180 guitars to try out that I referenced a while back?

-Chris
Hey Chris,

Locally I couldn't find one, I went to the Guitar Center and Sam Ash, no luck, ever since I've been in touch with a luthier out of Chicago and am in the process of getting a custom built guitar.

Hey, thanks.:D I think I need to try that so I can read them books faster.:p
Or since the words are so clear, you don't need glasses or contacts to read. Ahh, green sharpies, man's best friend.

...For instance by far my biggest hobby is skeet, and I run into all kinds of fellow shooters with the nuttiest ideas, for instance does shotgun brand make you a better shooter? Obviously not, but to some if you're not shooting an $12,000 Krieghoff or a Perazzi you'll never reach the top, that's bull.
I don't shoot much skeet, but I do shoot trap. Used to be very good, and have always used a Remington auto. First one was an old model 58 that was my great-grandfathers, then my grandfather bought me a 1100 trap grade when I went to nationals for the second year in high school.

A lot of the things you see in audio are similar to shotguns, and probably similar to a lot of other hobbies as well. For example, many people talk about the differences between $1000 and $5000 speakers. This is probably a good comparison to the differences between a Remington trap grade gun and a Perazzi. Is there a difference? Sure, the perazzi looks a lot nicer. Shoots a BIT better too, most likely. 5x better? No.

Take it to the next level though. Is there a difference between $100 and $1000 speakers? Or between a field grade mossberg and a trap grade Remington? Yes, there is a difference. A pretty big one. 10x difference? No, but bigger than the Rem trap grade to Perazzi difference.

My high school team had a pretty big mix of guns, from field grade pumps to fairly nice Brownings to Perazzis. Nobody really cared what kind of gun you shot, especially after hitting the pattern board a few times and seeing that one guys camo painted pump had a better group than anything else.

BTW, I love Krieghoffs and Perazzis. I would prefer a Remington 90-T, but i've shot a few Krieghoffs and Perazzis and would not turn one down. At Grand in Ohio in 1993 I held a customized Krieghoff K-80 that was carved and engraved to look like a dragon. The stock was all scales going to the head at the end of the barrel with the mouth opening up at the tip. $80K. Was that gun worth it? To the right person it was, I am sure. Did it shoot better than any other K-80? Probably not, but it was still worth a lot more.

I do the same thing with my audio gear that I did with my shotguns.
1) Start simple.
2) Learn about how to make it work well for you.
3) Buy the best you can afford.
4) Keep learning, but try to be content for a while.

I won't ever be able to get the $80K speakers or the $80K Krieghoff, but I will try my best to match their overall performance with the gear that I have.

So did Tom Nousaine turned the Subwoofer volume on the DTs to 25% while turning his NOUSAINE's IB Design to 100%?

The SuperCube III ( 82dB/25Hz) has more output than the SuperCube I (78dB/25Hz)? Makes absolutely no sense.
What doesn't make sense is the fact that those are both WAY off from factory specs. If you think it's BS, measure your stuff and post up the results. Put up a shut up :)

In answer to the original post: Yes, Audiophiliacs are, by far, the most insane tweek oriented hobbyists. Everyone else has posted under the name brand/consumerist angle, and its true that seemingly every major hobby has its 'elite' products. But I think this was more about the gimmicks.

Does trap shooting have people who think that placing boxes of shells inside $500 crystal pyramids enhance their trajectory after they get around to using them? No.

Has any oenophile ever used an electron microscope's $100,000 antivibration platform to try and decant their bottle of red without the byproducts of Earth's rotation effecting the bouquet? No.

Ever meet a stamp collector that uses a "demagnetizing" plastic gun (which goes 'click'). No.

Book collector that colors the page edges with a green marker? No.

Does the De Tomaso Pantera owners club of America have a select group of members that keep shakti stones in their gloveboxes? No.

Is the brand of scissor the tailor uses to fit your Armani wool suit worth the price of a second Armani wool suit? No.

Ever hear of a chef that replaced his Viking range's bakelite knobs with mpongi wood? No.
Well said. Thanks for the chuckle.

Yeah, Def Tech is really kind of like Bose: good marketing, but crappy speakers. I have absolutely not idea why so many audio reviewers love Def Techs. Beats the heck out of me.

And I think the DefTech Trinity Sub only has 80dB output at 25Hz. Really sucks. Are the New York Trinity Church people out of their God-loving minds to be using these pathetic speakers in their massive church? Absolutely no output whatsoever. The bass is not even all that tight.

I hate my BP7000SCs, CLR3000, & SM450s. Does anyone want to buy them cheap?

The thing that got me in the beginning was the fact that I knew nothing about how this stuff worked. Optical audio? What? So the first source of information that I encountered was marketing. Had I not done a Google search for component video wire to try to decipher what was important and what was BS I would probably still be saving for the Monster wire that comes with a free case.

It's not easy getting good info. Consider that the vast majority of people think Bose is quality and they're more than happy to share that knowledge with anybody who will listen. It's not easy to get into this without being duped.

In all fairness its pretty badass to have your wire come in its own padded aluminum attache case. Doubly badass if the padding conceals knives, garrote wire, and a silenced pistol.

To the Op:

I answer an emphatical NO!

To me "audiophile" means someone with above room temperature IQ that seeks quality and truth in audio, not all that "stuff" that is simply slung over the counter. A simple interest in audio does not an audiophile make. Just my rant for the day. A good eve to all!

In all fairness, the Bose engineers have done some amazing things. My dad has one of those Bose Wave radios. You wouldn't mistake it for a grown up stereo but it sounds amazing for its size. I've worked with Bose PA speakers that had a crapload of tiny drivers and they managed to sound pretty good for what they were.

I'm not suggesting that their products are appropriate for what most of us want. Still, you have to admire the engineering skill involved in turning crap into mediocrity.

Now there's a ringing endorsement for Bose products. :D

I have a friend that has had the wave system thingy since we were teenagers. It does sound OK, but it is what it is - a boombox. They work well for their intended application but are way too expensive, even for a boombox.

I auditioned the Definitive Tech Super Cube subwoofers once. They are impressive for their size, much like the Sunfire Truesubwoofers, but they certainly don't represent good bang for buck. And for the record, their specs are skewed.

They are cute to look at, but they lack in true performance.

The whole Church thing, makes no difference.;)

Yeah, those little Cubes are cute. Can't defy physics.

But the Trinity subs are 18" x 18" x 34" w/ Two 14" Subwoofers + Four 14" Radiators + 2,000 Watts RMS Amplifier & weighs 175 pounds.
