Question: Recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can't locate the United States on a world map. Why do you think this is?

Miss Teen South Carolina: "I personally believe the U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some, uh...people out there in our nation don't have maps, and, uh, I believe that our education like such as South Africa and, uh, the Iraq everywhere like, such as and...I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., err, uh, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future for our...

Simple: She got extremely nervous being on national TV and lost her train of thought. I'm sure she doesn't have a lot of experience fielding questions and responding off the top of her head. Could you do better?

I give presentations on things I know cold and have been doing for years and still people will throw me for a loop and I don't quite know how to respond. Now, I don't stutter and say 'Um' every few words but it is far more difficult than you think.

She's 18 and has quite good a resume for her age. She will get better with time...so cut her some slack.

She's either really dumb, or having a hard time figuring out a lie so she doesn't have to say the American School system blows...

I love how everyone piles on to something like this. I highly doubt that you could give a perfect response to a question when under pressure like that. When you actually get out of school and into the workplace, we'll see how well you do. How about a situation like I face, where every single person in the audience has a Master's Degree or better and decades of experience relating to the topic you are talking about. You wanna talk about pressure?

Cut her some slack. She's a young girl and hasn't yet become accustomed to dealing with off-the-cuff questions for which she may not be fully prepared.

If her current resume is any indication she will be highly sucessful in the future. She simply lacks experience. It's kind of like the interns we get - super sharp but lacking experience.

Well, If you have the job, you should be able to handle that. They don't make a mechanic do a job he isn't capable of doing, right?

18 years old? I suspect this pageant had some sort of guideline or requirement list. And I think questions are on that list. I've played in a band in front of 2 thousand people, all listening to my guitar. That's pressure enough not to screw up. By the way, the top student in my brothers graduating class has 99.8% average, and that's in the IB program.

If her current resume is any indication she will be highly sucessful in the future. She simply lacks experience. It's kind of like the interns we get - super sharp but lacking experience.
True, but you can't be THAT inexperienced, especially when you're going on a TV show. The camera will scare you all the time, not just when you're asked a question.

huh? if all the pretty ladies in the world were smart ... they'd be with me! not with some loser boyfriend/husband.

I guess, that's not such a bad idea.

she's purty. I only need smart when I'm gonna spend my life with her.

Ouch. That is cruel to post, and almost difficult to watch.

One the hand, she could have very well been stage-frightened. She spoke so much nonsense and non-sequitors, I believe she was very nervous up on the stage. I then have sympathy for her.

On the other hand, she seems about as sharp as a marble. There are a lot of ill-educated people lurking about...beware.

Boy. You are really on top of this story mazersteven.

I kind of feel sorry for her. But at least she's got a stiff upper lip about it.

Ouch.

I think you hit it right on the head MDS. Public speaking...either you have it, or you don't. And it's kind of cruel to laugh at stage fright...only because that's not the "real person." The clip is still kind of funny, but in context.

There is no proof that it is stage fright. You can blow a speech and then have the luxury of saying "It was stage fright". Yeah, you're an idiot, and you're a textbook example of what kids are learning these days, nothing. It's either jumbling up words, or saying nothing.

I'm going to fall into line behind MDS on this one. I've been in lots of bands and done public speaking and debates. I can say categorically that being a musician is not the same as public speaking under pressure, whether on TV or when having to formulate answers on the spot.

No such thing. the only pressure there is, is that which you allow yourself to feel.

Knowing this, you need never feel under pressure again. :)

I'm completely neutral on this. IF it was stage fright, stupidity, or whatever else. I can say this wasn't her first merry-go-round. She has been in the lime light if you will a number of other times at other pageants. Maybe not at this level, but she's been there. You can't say this is this is the furthest she has ever gotten. She won the pageant to get to the Miss Teen USA pageant.

Sheep, not everybody is as gifted as you. Not everybody is as talented as you in terms of overcoming stage fright and/or in this case public speaking. You can't expect all to think or act the way you do/think. Public speaking is either a gift or a learned process. There are many times when i used to think like you. Why somebody can be so stupid not understanding one thing that's so simple? Turns out, people have different way of thought and different ways of understanding things. Some may be able to process an instruction/question better if it is read out loud some do better if it is written.

Take the zen master (the old respected wise man mr. B). He might grew up in a very well educated family and learned all the stunning ability of coping with public speaking pressure from his family. Schooling is also an important part of his life that shapes his amazing self-confidence. His top-notch higher education level (where he had to practice public speaking in a smaller scale during his time in school)has helped him reach to a standard where most people he talk to is of the same or lower than his. All this, my friend, is an example of "learned" public speaking skill.

And to tell you the truth, from experience, playing music in front of thousands of people isn't the same as public speaking not to mention answering questions in huge public with judges all eyes on you. I screwed up my notes when i was playing for a huge crowd but if they ask me to give a speech, i'd be able to do it with flying colors. I was once given the opportunity of speaking in public for this group of highly-educated and high-profile folks for subject that i help translated. The speaker got suddenly ill and I happen to get invited and i had to get up and gave that presentation at that moment. With no prep work and no paper on hand, all i had was the power point presentation, I got up and I delivered. Asked me to play guitar with the same number of crowd, I'd rather ran off to the nearest bar!

Now Sheep...i hope you get what i am trying to say here..

Peace out...

I am unable to speak in front of a group of people without looking like a fool. In small groups informally and other forms of communication I am more than fine. But put me up behind a pedestal in front of more than a small group and my mind becomes very cluttered and my body...starts to just move on its own (ie, I've in the past kept scratching my neck, I've kept turning my head to the right, and more, all without knowing I was doing it)...not to mention my voice becomes uneven and slightly higher-pitched.

This doesn't mean she is or isn't smart, but I just wanted to put out there what it is like to suffer from "stage freight". It really does suck.

Edit: I thought she was the prettiest one of all of all the girls in the contest...so did my wife.
