Who do you download music from?

I have been thinking of making some compilation CDs for playing in the ol' auto and was contemplating downloading some music. I have several songs I would like to put on the CDs, but don't want to take the time to find and buy the CDs used or pay the price for new ones only to get one or two songs off them. I'm not talking about 200 songs, but perhaps enough to add to the ones I have on CD to make four or five really good ones, maybe 25-30 songs off the net.

Soooo, where do you folks go to download music? What sampling rate do you recommend? Bear in mind these will be primarily played in the car or while working and not for really critical listening. I don't have an Ipod or Mp3 player, so whatever I download will be filed away on the computer (for possible later acquisition of above stated device) and put on disc. Free downloads are cool, but I'm not sure I can find what I want for free. I don't mind ponying up the funds;)

Thanks for your replies!

I use Utorrent and the torrent search engines that come with it, very rarely do I need to go outside their prescribed engines to find something I want, but any torrent can be downloaded on Utorrent as far as I can tell. I really enjoy the interface, it is superior to bittorrent in just about every way, if not all ways.:) If you can't find what you are looking for on there, you don't belong on the internet.:D

Go to this link, basically it searches for songs that are open to the public on the internet, right click on the song and save as... it is a hit or miss with the quality.

:D....ahhh, nerd jokes. :p
What is the point in being a nerd, if you can express your nerdness?:D

I actually asked someone else what it exactly it meant, so I not 100%, but I am not going to pretend I have every base covered either.;)

Not sure what 127.0.0.1 means? It is the address of the 'localhost' and is also the loopback address (when you send packets from your local machine back to the same machine).

So giving your location as 127.0.0.1 is like saying 'I am here in front of THIS machine'.

Now back to your regularly scheduled thread....thanks for the replies, folks. Is everyone in agreement with the two suggestions or are there others as well? Anyone tried the usuals, ie Walmart, Napsta or iTunes?

Thanks!

I use iTunes now and then, so far it has worked well enough.

I was using solely using itunes when i was away from the civilized world but now I'm trying utorrent. It's hit and miss though as far as quality and what your actually getting. There is also no standardization of the type of files used either. Can't complain about the price though.;)

I just look for the largest files when looking for album torrents. I get a lot of 320 kbps fixed albums, and that isn't bad IMO. I have my computer connected to my main system and I think the stuff I have downloaded sounds excellent for the most part. The lower bit rate stuff is noticiably different from what some people refer to as "CD quality", but to be honest 320 kbps isn't as good as CD, and it makes perfect sense being that most albums take at least 500mb on the disc if not the full 7--mb of the disc. Most of the ones I get don't land much more than 110mb unless it is a multi-disc album.:)

I've only been messing with it since you mentioned it the other day so I'll still getting familar with it. Figured out what MKV file was and a media play that would play it.

I am glad someone took interest in the program. I find it much more intuitive than lousy Bittorrent, and it is loads (pun intended) faster. Everything is adjustable as well. Bittorrent, is pretty much like a default program with limited functions and adjustments. You can adjust individual priorities on Utorrent and increase bandwidth for certain downloads. It took a little time to get used to, but now I just fly through the thing. Oh, and there are tons of monitoring options and downloads start almost immediately (bittorrent seems to take forever to just get started, several minutes which just kills my "downloader's buzz")

Anyone tried WASTE?
What exactly is it? Can you provide a link. I googled it and found something, but it doesn't seem to be exactly a download site, but maybe the features are hidden.
