Who do you download music from?

Ok all of you guys check this out.

I have learned from experience that torrents suck for downloading individual tracks cause its just too much work. whats way easier is limewire.

P2P file sharing
practically any song u want
NO spyware
NO bundled software
its FAST

i have been using it for like the past 3 years now and i will never turn back. every single song on my pc and ipod has probably been downloaded from there (with the exception of a few hundred ripped from cds)

John, have you used Utorrent? I had Limewire until I got Utorrent, it wipes the floor with it.

Limewire does have some bundles software I believe, when I got mine I started getting pop-ups, which is strange because that never happens any other time, specifically after limewire was removed from the system.

yup i have u torrent and i am a member of revolution TT and demonoid

i use torrents all of the time to download full cds or movies but i think that just for downloading single songs, limewire is easier.

FLAC files all the way through torrents !
Upside:- Lossless format, exact identical to the studio recording, no compression

There always has to be a downside
Downside:-
very limited selection mostly on torrents
File size is big !

FLAC files are not for everyday downloads but the limited downloads that are available on torrents can be used as reference grade material.

Apart from that i use torrents and IRC to download music. IRC servers often release recent complete albums at Variable Bit Rate to 320 !

the easiest and most convenient software for music is ARES.

Of course not. The proliferation of peer to peer file sharing programs is exactly why we are in the mess we are in right now with all of the copy protection nonsense. I think it is comical how many people seem to think that movies and music should be free but then complain about the 'quality' of what they download.

Thats actually one of the main reasons I stopped downloading music I just didn't like a lot of the quality I was finding.

Well im in canada and i heard its legal to download anything here. (I really dont know how that works for the big record labels though)

ARES does list quality also when you search for audio files. Files range between 128,192,VBR,320.

Not every song would be available in good quality of course but its nice to see the newer songs are mostly being ripped at least at VBR.

Bit rate is only one factor in quality. There are many other little issues that make things more complicated than just ripping and encoding at a high bit rate and calling it good.

First and foremost is the fact that mastering engineers can put the markers for track change anywhere. They often mix songs together so they flow together as one if you were to play the CD from start to end. If you just blindly rip the CD you'll have songs that start or end abruptly or are a mix of two songs.

I could give many examples of this but instead will just give one: Pink Floyd (ALL CDs). For example, Welcome to the Machine starts a full 30 seconds before Shine On You Crazy Diamond ends. You cannot rip any of the tracks from The Wall as individual songs for the same reason.

MDS a very good point to note there.

But poor students like me have to settle with what we get online as we dont have the resources to buy cd's as we need to save up for the pot.

With the changes coming about in broadband internet in the near future. Especially after seeing that new cable modem with some crazy speeds.

I sometimes wonder if FLAC files will become the future MP3's because at such high speeds and lot of peers sharing, 30 to 50 mb FLAC files download would be feasible!

I would love FLAC files to be downloadable from a legit legal source. My only reservations about any kind of lossless compression scheme is that you run the risk of the decoder not being available someday.

But if you get a lossless file you can decode it immediately and save the WAV.

Exactly my plan ! I convert the limited albums i find on FLAC and use it as reference material in my HT especially when giving demos to my friends.

Now how much difference one hears between a 320 rip and a FLAC is debatable ( people with golden ears ) but it is good to know psychologically that it is lossless and is the best quality available.

Most of the music I listen to is international, and is very difficult / close to impossible to find through normal purchasing channels.
Most the normal music that is available, seems to be mostly 70% crap.

So, I download via utorrents, newsgroups, and iirc. Then sometimes later purchase individual songs or albums off the internet.

FYI. Most point 2 point (P2P) like kazaa, limeware, winmx put's spyware, adware, and other crap on your pc. Also, it makes it extremely easy to hack.

Be sure to check out http://www.tv-links.co.uk for all your Shows, Cartoons, Anime, Movies, Music Videos, Sport needs. It's mostly windowed streamed, BUT, if you note the reference website when you open up a video, you can go directly there, download in full, and watch full screen.

If you can get a hold of a membership with a good tracker and you have a fast connection, things go by so much faster.

I am hooked up with a T1 connection at 25 mbps down and 5 mbps up and i have a membership for revolutiontt.net and I can usually download at an average speed of 1mbps (1000 kbps)

A T1 connection is 1.45 Mbps, which is dog slow compared to a cable modem. Either you don't have a T1 or you aren't getting anywhere near 25 Mbps. An average speed of 1 Mbps is believable.

Sorry my bad. i think it has got to be a T3 then. i get it from my cable provider and it is advertised as the Nitro speed connection at a speed of 25 down and 5 up. i have done some speed tests and got pretty close to that.

anyways, i pay 92 dollars/month but i think its totally worth it.

Try Musicgiants.com, you can download music that is uncompressed. The files are bigger but the sound is much better.

Checked them out, its nice to see but they are lacking in the area of artists. Good up and comer though. Mp3s will always have the lead its what people like now.
