Man, I don't know if I can go back to normal music after hearing how perfectly mastered movie soundtracks are.. I can't stop listening to the Batman Begins soundtrack... its flawless. Vibrant orchestra, deep percussion, and some modern electronic effects thrown in as well.

The orchesstral sections of soundtrack recordings nearly always sound better than most CDs of classical orchestra music. Why is that? Is is a matter of budget?

No compression. Movies create moods by using the volume of the music. So they have the orchestra play loud or soft to achieve this. If you compress the CD, you loose all of the peaks and nulls in the recording.

Music producers must know this, so why would they apply compression? It is not a technical limitation, because the CD format was designed to capture the full dynamics of a live performance. Besides, when I said that soundtracks sound better, I was comparing CDs to CDs, not CDs to DVDs.

They compress it because the labels want it as loud as possible.

I have all three of the Pirates of the carribean soundtracks. I like the 1st and the 3rd the best. I also like the Gladiator soundtrack.

One thing I would love to see if a live performance of either the 1st of 3rd pirates soundtracks by a full orchestra. :D

Another thing i do like about these soundtracks is the dynamics. Instead of popping in a cd and being blasted by sound for an hour instead there are soft and delicate parts and powerfull and deeply moving parts

The best thing I like about soundtracks is the variety of genres and different types of music. The very first soundtrack I bought was from the movie "Casino". I instantly fell in love with some of the 70's artists, a lot of the classic rock, but most of all the vocal jazz of Dinah Washington. Had it not been for that soundtrack, I would have missed out on one of my favorite artists.

Also, I really love listening to "Evita" (yes the more recent Madonna one) at high volume, and also the sountrack from the european movie "Beautiful Thing" which introduced me to the music of the Mammas and the Pappas.

I have a few others, but those would be my 3 favorites.

Your talking about the other type of movie soundtrack, The sort of compliation of already available tracks. When it comes to movie soundtracks there really are two kinds. The full blown score produced specifically for the movie, And the compliation of tracks used in the movie. Havent ever bought a movie soundtracks that was of the compliation type but I can see how its a great way to pickup on some new artists that you hear in a movie and want to hear more of. :D

QFT.

Next time some chucklehead gives you the 'CD sucks compared to vinyl' speech, hand them a copy of your favorite soundtrack.
