Thoughts about this HT set up

I am having a new house built and started researching equipment. I have put together this package for about $11k (before cables/wiring). I wanted to see if anyone had any feedback on alternate equipment that is about the same price or less and has comparable performance. Also, any thoughts on equipment I might be missing (first time HT builder)..thanks for the help.

Great choice in components.

The only device you listed that I would not buy is the APC J15 ($600).

WAY too much money for what it provides. An Isobar from a reputable company like Tripp Lite with line filtering is all that is required. Cost about US$80 to $100. Most quality components like you have listed provide their own quality voltage regulating power supplies so save your money and upgrade to the new Harmony 1000 with touch screen or buy more CD's/DVD audio/SACDs.

Once again. Great choices!!!

Harmony 1000?!?!?! are you crazy?! lol. You can have an entry-to-decent surround sound receiver for 600 bucks! My yammie universal remote control does absolutely the same thing... and I don't have to recharge it! ;)

I agree you can get the same functionality with another remote (I have the Harmony 688) but there is something cool about a LCD touch screen sitting on the coffee table. Compared to the competitions similar offerings, it is cheap.
Maybe getting more music was a more practical suggestion.

Is this a dedicated room? What are the dimensions?

I say...if possible...replace the APC J15 with something like westcott's suggestion and use the extra money for a second sub or a step up in speakers if there is something you like better thats in that price range. (I would go with the second sub as my first option)

Looks good,

That is actually a better suggestion. More money in speakers will pay the biggest dividends in the long run. Good call strongbadf1

P.S. Every time I see your forum name, I think of Beef Stroganoff:p

11K How did he get 11K out of that system? I figure 8K tops and that leaves 3K to play with for better speakers. :D

I guess you could spend about a thousand total for cables, depending on runs and number of components but you are right. I get around $8K too. I have a feeling that projector mounts, AV racks\credenzas, seating, speaker stands, and all the other things that you do not think about until you need them can put a dent in the 3K pretty quick. Especially furniture!

I have to give him a LOT of credit though. It seems he has done his homework and he has chosen some very good value equipment.

Yes that's true he has put alot of thought into his system, and it will be very nice.

I just thought that if he has an extra 3K, I would think about better speakers.

But your right all that other stuff adds up.

I was wondering myself, what speakers he was going to use in that setup....

Considering that you are going for a PJ and 118" screen, I am assuming you have a pretty expansive room. I have not heard the SVS SB-1 system, but my fear is that it may not be sufficient. Using money saved as indicated earlier, you may probably want to get beefier speakers and subwoofer.

+10 on finding something with a bit more speaker presence...

If the room is large enough, I would suggest a step up on that sub also to a PB12+. Maybe if your not in a hurry, SVS will be announcing their Mid-Tower Speaker systems.... I'll be looking forward to checking those out...

thanks

everyone,

thanks for the feedback...

sorry on the math error. I forgot to include $3K for the furniture (although I'm now worried it may be low end crap). $3100 got me two sets of 4 recliners (8 total) they are called the "Directors collection" from Hometheaterroom.net....I guess I'll see.

The room is dedicated home theater, 16W x 19L x 11H.

thanks again for the input...just getting started in this, but at least I learned enough thus far to avoid Bose (though not sure exactly why)

Also remember. You don't have to do everything at once.

Yep; I would hate to see you build a 11K system that uses $250 speakers for the mains.(not bashing SVS, I love their stuff) Bump up that speaker budget and bump down the electronics.

Amen. You and your guests would be happy to sit on milk crates to listen and view a killer audio\video system, if thats what it took to recover financially.

Wow!

They make plastic milk crates?

I'm still sitting on the old fashioned wooden ones.
