Best racing movie for sound?

Driven is one of the worst movies ever made.

It isn't your local Tower, Tower Records is going out of business world wide. I was there this weekend too. Deals arent' really good enough yet to really be a benefit though. Sad to see them go.

Ronin. Not really a true racing movie but some of the scenes are rad! Oh yeah "dust to glory" is pretty sweet too.

Ronin isn't a great movie either IMO, but the one car chase scene is definitely up there with the best on film :)

I'll second that...

...I gotta disagree with you on that one. I really liked Ronin, but it's admittedly not for everyone, a bit of a sleeper. Regardless of whether or not one likes the movie, it's got one of the best car chase scenes in any movie.

BTW, for those who don't know, John Frankenheimer directed both Ronin and Grand Prix.

I didn't like the pacing and the story felt a bit too predictable with Ronin, but that is just me. Overall good, but not on my *personal* list of best movies.

Same here, I really like that movie and the chase scene is great.

I want to hear screaming engines and screeching tires, not music.
Then rent Super Speedway! It also has the song Once Upon a Time In The West by Dire Straits in it.

Already seen Super Speedway. One of the HD channels was showing it about a year ago. Pretty cool, but not enough actual racing in it for me. It seemed to be a lot more single car track testing footage.

I agree with Jack Hammer about Ronin. But I've already got that one. I can't believe that pickings are so slim for a good racing movie.

There's really not a lot out there, at least not quality wise. If you want to watch a cheesy entertaining movie, rent Deathrace 2000. Bad acting + bad directing + bad effects = bad @$$ movie. :D

Also, if you like motorcycles and want to see a drama about the motorcycle racing mentallity, watch 'Little Fauss and Big Halsy' with Robert Redford. Decent movie from the early 70's. I have no idea if it's out on dvd, but I'd buy it if it was. Not a movie for everyone, a bit slow at times. Also, 'Faster' which is about 500cc motorcycle grand prix racing. Good sounds, nice onbike footage at around 200mph. Clip from Faster at circuit city.

In case no one mentioned it, the pod scene from Star Wars episode 1 is decent, at least for sound.

I ended up buying Grand Prix a few months ago at the behest of some on here. Well, I didn't actually get around to watching it until last weekend. Wow. That movie has some of the best racing footage I've ever seen! The director did a great job of making you feel like you were actually in the cars. Especially that one race in the rain. I kept trying to move my head around to see better. (Like that was actually gonna help:rolleyes: )

I also finally found a copy of Days of Thunder. That one was hella hard to find for some reason. Days of Thunder was ok. But not near as good as Grand Prix.

Thanks again to those of you who suggested that one.

Great movie. I also recently bought it. If they could only have less dialog between the race scenes....

Grand Prix is one of the best racing movies ever made. Not only does it have incredible on-car footage, the real kind not cg, it is one of the few movies I've seen that really captures the mentality and varying personality types of many racers. Movies like Days of Thunder are entertaining and touch on the way racers see things, but it's put in a more glamorous hollywood style. I think I mentioned it in a previous post, if your get the chance, watch Little Fauss and Big Halsy (early 70's) starring Robert Redford to see more racing mentality in a slower moving movie. Good race scenes at end of movie, mostly story til then.

Yeah. I basically fast-forwarded through most of the love story junk.

BTW - I was watching the special features and James Garner is looking OLD!!! I don't know if I've seen him since Rockford Files.

Just bought Cars yesterday. I haven't finished watching it yet. I like that race scene in the very beginning, but the music is a little loud. I'm more into hearing the cars than the music.

(A little insider FYI, the characters "Not Chuck" and "Kori Turbowitz" are SF morning radio DJ's, Sarah and No-Name. I listen to them every morning, they're hella funny.)

How about realism? Cars is great for sound and video on a reference scale, but not realistic scale. I like my Skylines to sound like Skylines, not Civics or Mustangs. I like my BOV's louder then the entire car, like they should be.

Cars has a place, but it's not first place.

Yeah, I wish there were more good racing movies. I can't believe there are so few. Cars has some decent scenes, but it's still a kid's movie. I want a movie with more drama and less music.
