Which SVS model was it you heard and was it it the same room as the Perlisten sub(s)?
I've owned them. I had a pair of their SB16-Ultras. Great for what they are. I heard the Perlistens at Axpona and they sounded like you'd expect for nearly 8x the price. Pretty incredible really. If I trusted Social Security, I'd toss the TSP/401K at what was in that room: S7t Black Editions with D8is.

FWIW, when replacing subs in a stereo rig similar to the OP's, it was an SVS that just didn't work. I can't be absolutely sure, but I suspect it was the delay/latency from the dsp. Like the OP, I have no means to compensate upstream, and no placement flexibility. A sub without dsp worked much better, per both measurements and the ear test.

That's not a criticism of SVS, just that they may not be the most appropriate choice to integrate with an old school system that lacks upstream bass management.

Hi @Gio-G. What kind of music do you typically listen to? You already know that the source material is one of the biggest factors in sound quality so members could make some recommendations on albums that are particularly well recorded and bring out the best in your system.

Hello,
Apologies for the late response.

We were moving our daughter back for her JR. college year. After seeing this, I felt compelled to respond.

I can only answer your question by saying I listen to such a wide variety of music that there is no particular style that stands out.

I have found excellent "Q-Sound" recordings from Madonna and Sting plus many others in that interesting recording format.

I have Telarc CDs with different classic pieces that are extremely high quality recordings.

I am very interested in TLS' pipe organ music. I'd like to hear it on his system and my own.

I just received the 40th Addition of SuperTramps' Crime Of The Century.

The music is extremely well recorded.

The bonus of this CD is it comes with a 1975 Hammersmith Odeon live concert from March 19th of that year.

I'm always open for recommendations when it comes to very well recorded music.
If you have something you love that is very well recoded, I'm all ears.

BTW,

I don't find Steely Dans' Aja or Pink Floyd's Dark Side to be the "best recored" albums of all time.

Those two are brought up very often, and they sound great, but there are IMO better recordings, or at least better sounding albums on my system.

Lately I've been into Sona Jorarteh who is of Gambian decent. She has some well recorded stuff.

I also love heavy rock/metal.

I also consider Crime of the Century as very well recorded. Aja and DotM I also consider very well recorded (and my favorite DotM is a multich version). You might like this thread along those lines https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/the-greatest-recordings-of-all-time.62652/ and maybe this article too https://www.audioholics.com/music-reviews/cd-sacd-and-lp-demo-material

Dude,,,,,,!!!!

I just had Crime Of The Century delivered yesterday! The 40th Edition remaster I believe, and there is a sleeper part of that CD package. Disc #two (I know discs) is the Live Hammersmith Odeon 1975, March 9th concert. The start of Bloody Well Right is incredible.

I do have a DSOTM CD which is a 1994 mastered version.

I have AJA in a Japanese format. It is supposedly a better recording and master but I'm not 100% convinced. I have the original and it sounds great. I should probably do a side by side.

I'll check that thread out.

Thank you!!

Nice, I'd seen there was a bluray in DTS for the Hammersmith show. I've heard it via streaming but don't have a copy.

I only have my original vinyl of Aja from when it was released.

I have my original vinyl of DotM (and a later vinyl copy I inherited from a friend), a Mofi pressing of it, the 94 CD and a 30th anniversary SACD :)

The DSOTM 1994 that I have is OK. Apparently the 50th anniversary is viewed as better. There is a whole rundown with measurements of almost all versions. It is quite interesting, but I don't understand all of it.

I believe this is it.

I like a little sparkle in the highs and love cymbals which the mix I have is noted for but I also love deeper bass and that is not a trait of the 1994 version I have.

Nice rundown, seen it in pieces only so far. The 50th is tempting, but doubt I'll hear any significant difference otoh :)

I do like the way Crime of the Century is recorded. Even in the Quietest Moments sounds pretty nice too but lesser known is Brother Where You Bound. I love the way the piano and horns are recorded on that album and the vocals sound nice as well. If you have streaming services, check out the track Cannonball.

On the jazz side, Diana Krall's The Look of Love is pretty highly regarded. I have also been meaning to get something from Dominique Fils-Aimé of late. Beautiful Canadian vocalist and her albums are supposed to sound amazing. Her material has been popular at high-end audio shows recently.

Béla Fleck's Flight of the Cosmic Hippo is a fun one. Good album over all and the title track has a bridge where Victor Wooten's bass digs really deep.

One of my all time favorites is Aliens At My Buick by Thomas Dolby. So much going on on that album. James Bond style intro. Super funky songs with slap bass that sounds incredible. Soft vocals over ambient music. I never get tired of that album.

On the classical front, I have a CD that others have commented on as being a good recording. Beethoven Symphonie No.3 “Eroica” and Schubert Symphonie No.8 "Unvollendete" by the Met Orchestra with James Levine conducting. This is a direct to digital recording by Deutsche Grammophon 439 862-2.

Lastly, I also like the way Crowded House albums are recorded. Temple of Low Men sounds particularly good.

Others' opinions may differ. :D Yeah, would love to hear TLS's system too. Pipe organ is pretty difficult to replicate faithfully.

Thank you for the list. I will check most, if not all of that out.

I have a Pat Metheny disc on the way today. Somewhere I read it was recorded in "Q-Sound" which I really like, but that is not the case after further research. Apparently the recording is wonderful which is why many think that format was used.

I'm not a streamer yet, but I have a system upgrade in the works to get on board with streaming. All these years I've never felt the need, and I'm still not overly interested but,,,,,,,, I'm caving in, and I'm sure I'll enjoy the extra dimension it brings.

I also have Roger Waters Amused To Death on the way. It is touted as a reference Q-Sound recording. We shall see.

The Rogers Waters material tends to sound pretty good. I have an NVidia Shield TV Pro which is a multi-function device. It streams the popular services like Netflix, Disney and Youtube, etc. and will do audio streaming too. It can also access my media library so I use Plex to play movies and TV shows and to play my music collection. My CDs are all ripped to FLAC using Exact Audio Copy so it's all lossless and same quality as the original CD.

TLS uses a small form factor PC as it has access to more content but the Shield covers a lot of that with a nice interface and easy to use remote. It even has an app for the Berlin Philharmonic streaming service, which is one of TLS' favorites as it is one of the few services that offers classical music in Dolby ATMOS. If you visit and like classical he will likely play some of that for you as he has a system optimized to take advantage of a full ATMOS music track.

Takes a bit of time to rip a CD collection to FLAC but once it's completed you can't beat the convenience. I also have a Roon subscription which purports to have the best quality possible playing back digital music. The difference, if any, is probably small and hard to notice but it's my favorite interface for music playback although expensive. It also has great device support. I can access my library on my PC, phone or Denon AVR and I have a Raspberry Pi mini-computer connected to an older Denon AVR in another room. You can send different streams to each device or sync them together to play the same stream simultaneously. Maybe not something for someone with a single audio system but a good example of just how many options are out there.
