Supplemental NUTRITION Assistance Program restrictions

This has been on the news here in Indiana with certain classes of grocery items now not covered by SNAP.

I'm scratching my head because the intent of SNAP is literally in the acronym.

Do you mean that food supplements such as vitamins, minerals and antioxidants which used to be available without sales tax are no longer covered?

In Quebec, those products if prescribed by a physician, are available tax free. Otherwise, you have to pay the sales tax even when importing from US, such as when I order from iHerb.

Overall, I spend over $1,000 yearly for nutritional supplements. I don't bother ordering through my family doctor. Most of the products that I use are superior to the ones available in local pharmacies. As you most likely know, physicians and pharmacies are controlled by big Pharma.

It's sugared drinks, candy, chips, etc...

I can’t say I’m overfond of programs that treat their participants like morons that can’t possibly make an informed decision for themselves. Soda, candy, and chips aren’t crystal meth. They can be enjoyed as part of a healthy diet in moderation. But hey, let’s get super self righteous and really put the boot to the necks of those who need assistance. No soup for you!

There's nothing nutritious about sugared sodas, candy and chips. Look in shopping carts at grocery stores- loaded with bad food, in large amounts. Then, look at the people- many are obese, at a minimum. SNAP and food stamp programs have been abused for decades and the people who used them aren't always healthy. The easy way to spot someone using SNAP/WIC is to look at the conveyor- their stuff is separated from the items paid for by the program.

Searched for definition of nutrition:
  1. The process of nourishing or being nourished, especially the process by which a living organism assimilates food and uses it for growth and for replacement of tissues.
  2. The science or study that deals with food and nourishment, especially in humans.
  3. A source of nourishment; food.

Mmm, so we should just ban them for public consumption then, yes? Why should we allow these iconic companies to poison us? Or is it just those who need assistance that “abuse” their benefits by buying the same products the rest of us do? For shame

But it's not the intent of the program. Others like WIC and HBI are already restrictive in what you can purchase. This is nothing new.

And nothing is banned. You can still purchase those items. My brother and gf are on assistance. There is always a 12 pack of Coors and they both smoke. So they aren't doing without, it's just out of their own money. Money they aren't spending on groceries.

I don't think it's treating anyone like a moron. It's money ear marked for specific use.

Can you take your Health Savings Account credit card and purchase a TV? I mean if we aren't overfond of treating participants in HSA's like morons....

Nope, but they could be taxed / regulated to a degree like alcohol and tobacco. Both items that SNAP won't pay for either. You have to come out of your own pocket for that.

Well, tobacco definitely wouldn’t be nutritional assistance, would it? And as a fairly dangerous / addictive drug, subsidizing alcohol seems like a fair thing to nix as well. But a bag of Doritos? Who the truck cares besides pearl clutching asswipes?

I asked about the HSA program. Can you purchase a T.V. with your HSA card? If so why not?

Pearl clutching asswipes are an awful lot of Americans that see no issue making better use of their taxes.

You need to actually respond to the point I made: There have been calls for a sugar tax in varying degrees. Just like Tobacco and Alcohol. It's not a new concept.

Ok. I'll bite: Make your case for nutritive value of candy, chips, soda etc. Also make the case for why I should buy it for you.
I like low salt potato chips as a snack for example; they’re loaded with good fats and potassium. In moderation, not an issue, period. Dark chocolate is also known to have health benefits.

Meanwhile…
But hey, let’s pretend the powers that be give a flying truck about the less fortunate,.or do the usual suspects not see a pattern emerging?

I’m guessing you do…and you like it. And that means you can go eat poop as far as I’m concerned. Pray you never have a life altering event that causes you to end up on the wrong side of that line. I’m going to laugh, and laugh, and laugh.
