Audyssey sub settings quick questions before running

Ok, for years now I that I have been running Audyssey I ALWAYS get -12 in the Receiver for the sub and god damn it I'm determined to get some number below freaking that. I tried "lower" in the sub so the indicator is lower or to the left of the green happy spot Aydyssey wants. I tried a little higher or to the right of the green happy spot Aydyssey wants and its ALWAYS -12. My tiny brain seems to think to the higher to the right of the green happy spot Aydyssey wants is right but maybe not slightly this time but well to the right of the green happy spot Aydyssey wants. What do you think? Please lord something other than freaking -12 which I understand to be wrong. I don't care of its -11.5 just something other than -12. :D Can you feel the desperation?

Oh I'm using the Audyssey app by the way which is fantastic. Denon X3400H from quite a few years ago. RSL 12 Sub and RSL 10 sub.

Have you tried using just the avr to run Audyssey? Then just manipulate those results (if different) with the app? I have faint memories of some issues with early versions of the app in terms of levels but its been a while.

How low are you setting gain on the subs? The -12 is indicating the avr is at its limit of turning the sub level down, that it is set too high on the sub.

Yeah. The sub level is too high. Audyssey is trying to lower the db level(let’s say to -16) but -12 is as low as it goes.
In short, subs are too hot.
So you want to be to theft side of the green happy spot.

I thought I had seen something like that posted on this and other forums, typically in such cases you have to lower the gain of the subwoofer(s) even if it is in the green or already left of green. Give it a try, yes -11 would be fine, but I would aim for no more than -9.

Shows how much I know or how I think. I thought for sure it would be to the right of the green so the levels would be lower than -12. If the subs themselves are high it would try to lower the number from -12 to something lower. Ok I'm gonna give it a shot now.

The avr trim level is limited to -12, it is trying to go lower but can't, why you have to lower the gain on the sub....might not take much of a lowering of gain level on the sub, tho. Rather than go thru the whole several mic positions setup, just try to find what the first mic position does after lowering the gain on the sub. If you get it to -11.5 or higher its fine.

With 1/2 way Gain mark on the sub is set, my Audyssey MultiEQ - XT is performed. After calibration I have to turn the Gain down to 9 o'clock, for best performance, for my ears/room. My HT room is 8 X 12. I forgot what the original calibration level is, and probably -12. No big deal, in my case. DD movies do not miss a beat. Internet Music is good, too. Nothing to worry about with -12.

If the result is -12 hard to know if that just coincided with you having turned the gain on your sub down sufficiently or not. Many of my plate amp subs need to be far less than the suggested starting point of half way, tho (which is merely a guess as subs vary in this respect quite a bit).

I am SOOO DAMN done with this process! RAN TWICE with the same results! I put it way to the left and -12, I put it all the way to the left and -12! Then I it seemed Audyssey couldn't even measure them! WHY HAVE THE STUPID GREEN AREA! I am truly at the end of my rope with this crap. I am about to spend money to have a HT guy come in a tell me what the F I'm doing wrong. It eats me alive I can't figure this out and get it right! I'm gonna try once more tomorrow. On vacation and more aggravated because of something so damn stupid!

Do you have an spl meter? You should see what level it’s actually at when you’re at 12:00 or 9:00 or whatever. Audyssey just wants to set the sub to 75db.
Set it for even lower like off the green area. See what it does. I suspect to have a natural peak that’s causing an issue.

What sub is it and what sort of gain settings are you using?

The problem here is that at -12, we don’t know where the sub is set to compared to the rest of the speakers. If the speakers are set to 75db, then the sub should be too(before bumping up for preference). When audyssey comes back with -12 we don’t know how hot the sub channel really is. For example if the AVR could go down infinitely and after calibration it came back with a result of say, -20 then you have an idea that the sub channel is 8db too high. It’s fine to set it that high if you want to, but you should also know exactly how hot the sub channel is. Thats why -10 is a good number. Because many like a bump of a few db, and that leaves room for headroom, and also you will know how many db you’re over 75, relative to the other speakers.

What sub is it and what sort of gain settings are you using? I don't even know what left or right means on your particular avr, but you should be concentrating on the settings on the sub itself.

So het. Since you’re using two subs you’ll need to set them individually first. Set one just under the green, then turn off that sub and set the other for the same spot.
I use an spl meter at this time and individually set them for about 70ish. Then all 3 combined results at about 75. I also use a minidsp and rew. Luckily this just audyssey so we should be able to get you going the right direction.
Also, you should have an sol meter just to very certain settings. There are some apps for phone spl meters. I don’t know if I trust them but it might be good enough just to check for some kind of consistency.

He means this. It’s the newerish what of the audyssey setup. IMO the green is like recommending to start at 12:00 on the sub.
If you’re outside of the green, it will simply ask you if you want to proceed anyway, or something like that.

Ah thanks, yeah none of mine have that particular interface. Still curious what the actual gain settings on the sub have been....
