40 years ago, with rudimentary equipment, you could tape something to watch later. Today, you have to have YouTube TV or some damn thing with DVR capability. That is super lame! I have an air antenna and a couple of steaming apps like YouTube Premium.

Its is all about DRM. Thank the pirates.

I don’t understand the complaint.

Back in the ’90s I had three JVC top-of-the-line S-VHS VCRs in our system fed by a big antenna in the attic, so we could record two shows while watching a third one we’d previously recorded, with the best picture and audio available at the time. Total outlay for the machines, $1500.

All replaced by a $20 Roku.

I have my antenna connected to my 4-tuner TiVo Roamio that is still going strong. I record old TV shows daily. TiVo still offers an OTA model with the Edge. Though, it has two tuners compared to four tuners for OTA like some older models and is currently out of stock. Tablo OTA DVR is an option. It works with the Tablo TV app that one can download in supported Smart TVs and devices. There is a 4-tuner model as well.

So if not for piracy, we'd have digital recorders?

That's cool! I'll look into that. I rarely watch anything on TV, but this morning I wanted to do some yard work at the same time. Also, for Vikings games coming up in a handful of weeks. If you know you won't make it home for kick-off.

Another option would get HDHomeRun (network TV tuner), connect it to your TV antenna. Have Plex Server (with Plex Pass). Enjoy streaming and DVR your own TV without monthly payments (assuming lifetime plex pass option)
Your est costs: $250 for plex pass, $200 for 4k TV tuner. Hardware for Plex server - $120-150. a big azz USB HDD to store the content - $170 (or less for smaller drive). Total about $750-$800 for 4k capable DVR.
There also whole bunch of much cheaper options, but this will give you much more functionality and flexibility.

If somebody already has an OTA antenna, wifi network, Smart TV and/or Smart device supporting the Tablo app and simply wants to record their local OTA channels from time to time, the 2 tuner Tablo can currently be had for $59.99 and the 4 tuner model for $99.99 with no subscription or other fees. Though, those wanting ATSC 3.0 4k will have to look elsewhere as Tablo supports ATSC 1.0 HD.

You can still do Tivo too with OTA and streaming services, and it is still addictive, lol.
