Problem with setting up surround sound system with an old AV receiver

Thanks!
As a little update, the font 2 speakers work after I disconnected the bridges.
I am connecting the green cable with my phone, and connect it to the A1 (R/L) inputs, I guess my phone works with TRS after all.
I am guessing the green cable I had only has 2 channels or something, and the speakers work fine, but I guess I'll find that out after I got the 5.1 converter.

Which inputs did you use the green cable with? Yes, it's just stereo (2 ch).

As a little point of interest, what happens if 1 of the cables from a speaker disconnects while the system is on?
For example, the Positive (+) cable from my FR speaker disconnects while its playing, would that break anything?

I am asking because I wanna try to jerryrig the broken output with an alligator clip, but it might just fall off randomly, its very loose. I'm not sure how dangerous this is.

Not particularly but best to make/break connections while not powered. Don't move things around or switch cables....I'd just make sure it was firmly connected and then don't fool with it. Vise grips might be better :)

I tried it with both my phone and my laptop.

I also searched for the audio specs of my laptop and it showed the following:
Audio support
HD Audio, Realtek ALC3287 codec / Dolby Atoms for Gaming Certification, Harman speakers, 2W x 2, dual array microphone, headphone / microphone combo jack

I meant what input ports on the back of the avr did you use with the cable?

Sounds like you can at least for now use stereo mode on your phone/laptop.

Well I have tried the inputs down below, when I connected it with AV1 I can change it to either use 5.1CH or Stereo, but out of those 2 only the stereo one works.

But you removed the jumpers for the main in/pre-out front left and right channels first? When you say you can use 5.1 you are upmixing the stereo signal or using an all-ch stereo mode? Not sure what you mean by that....

I mean I can use the 5.1 mode from the AVC, as seen on the display in picture below.
When I press the "AV1" button once it says "Stereo", and if I press it again it says "5.1CH".

I did not remove any jumpers in the AVC, I removed the jumper/bridges or how you call it from my front speakers.

Ah, thanks for the clarification. If you remove the jumpers but don't use both terminals you're only going to get part of the speaker to function. I'd replace the jumpers/bridges on the speakers (and use just one pair of terminals). You get sound from the phone/computer connected to AV1, tho? But only in 2 channels despite the 5.1 on screen? The A1 input didn't work at all?

ps are you keeping your speaker wiring in phase/polarity (- to - and + to + ?)

No all inputs worked on stereo mode, but not on 5.1CH mode (so when it shows 5.1CH on screen nothing works, but when it shows stereo on screen, it works).
So the AV1-4, and the A1-4 all work fine, except when in 5.1CH mode.
Hope it makes sense now? :)

Ah okay so I do need those pieces of metal, I was missing one of them so thought I'll try it without all of them. I guess I will have to find one of those, or just make one myself, to use my speakers optimally again.

Also yes, I made sure all the speakers + are connected to the AVC +, and likewise with the -'s.

Instead of the actual pieces of metal you can use short lengths of speaker wire instead. You may not have an upmixer when it shows 5.1, which wouldn't surprise me. Just wasn't sure what you were describing.....

ps Originally thought you broke a speaker terminal on the avr itself, replacing a terminal on a speaker would be easier than on an avr....but you would have to open up the speaker to access it from the inside, usually by removing the larger driver....

No your were right, I did break a speaker terminal on the AVR itself, so I am still gonna see how I will fix that, maybe see if one of my friends could help me with that.

And thanks about the tip with the Wire, I will do that instead!

The Dussen D-9 has no digital signal processing. The AV1 input will not deliver sound to all speakers unless a 5.1 signal is input using all six analog ports. I'd separate the two channel phone and laptop connections from AV1 and perhaps connect the phone to A1 and the laptop to A2 if using a 3.5mm cable with it and leave AV1 set to 5.1. Even with the 5.1 converter connected to the six analog ports, two channel signals coming from the TV optical cable will only produce sound in the front channels. That brings up another issue, but one thing at a time.

Oh wait, so does that mean that I need the subwoofer connected for all the speakers to work? Cause I dont have that one connected yet since I'm missing the cables for it.

The tv has hdmi with arc, does that also have the possibility to have 2 channels?

The rest of the speakers will work without the subwoofer connected. The HDMI ARC feature doesn't matter in your case. But, the optical output needs to be set for 5.1. In the TV sound settings, make sure digital audio output is set at bitstream or passthrough and not PCM. If you connect any devices to the TV, make sure each HDMI port on the TV is set for bitstream or passthrough as well. Each connected device will need to be set for DD 5.1 output or there may be a bandwidth issue and the TV will convert the incoming signals to two channel PCM for output to the optical cable.

I think throwing it away was the right move. The idea of spending money on it in order to provide modern connections leaves me cold. You can find a modest 5.1 AVR brand new for $400. if that breaks the bank there are thousands of used ones available for less. I have a 5.1 Pioneer Elite unit in a closet. You can have it for $200 but I won't ship it. You would have pick it up. I doubt you can complete an analog to HDMI conversion for much less. You have a boat anchor. Sorry.

I am guessing you are only talking about the avr right? And not about the speakers.

I reached out to some friends and they got some different kind of converters, and of them has the 5.1 converter and another one has hdmi to tulp converter etc.
I will try those ones first and if that doesn't work I might just consider buying a new avr or selling the speakers.
