Wife Totaled Her Car

Seriously, I have no life.
Is that where they'll cover the cost of a whole new vehicle instead of just giving you current market value? How do they determine that? Buy you a new current model of the car that was totaled? I'm kinda unfamiliar with the concept, but in well over 35 years of driving and 24 years of marriage have never had to file a claim like this. If it's only a couple dollars more a month tho, that woulda been nice in hindsight.

Oh well, too late for that now. We do have a check for almost $12k coming our way so that's a great start if I can find a good deal.
Used car values are high, so Blue Book should have increased, too. However, the insurance industry being what it is, I doubt the settlement will be fair. You can refuse the offer in some cases, too. They may want to play hardball, but know what you can and can't do. I was told to refuse any first offer by a lawyer. Unfortunately, this advice came after I had accepted what State Farm had offered when my car was stolen.

I'll tell ya, she's pissing me off just a little bit... I'm driving a ten year old vehicle, she totals the newer one and now she's all "well I want cruise control" or "I don't like that model" and "I want a bigger car this time"...

Like fućk. We're getting what we can afford, and hopefully without a payment. Fuckin pick and choose and put restrictions on what she's willing to drive... booshit. She's lucky I don't revoke her license and buy a pair of Salk SS 9.5s...
Remind her that she caused the crash by not paying attention. Yes, I'm aware that I'm not married to her and that this is exactly what someone might want to say but shouldn't, if they want to stay married.

Or, you could make her think you're still asleep and mumble something about this. When she confronts you about it, just say "What? I must have been dreaming".

The state gov't usually has regulations that determine what threshold an insurance company uses to determine a total loss. It differs by state so there's that too.

And insurance companies like to use info that's not always accurate to tell people they can't insure certain vehicles and for certain reasons. I just went through this after getting another e-mail from The Hartford, telling me that they can save me hundreds of dollars, but they don't insure the vehicle I have- said the State of Wisconsin won't let them. I called the office of the WI Insurance Commissioner and was told that it wasn't true.

Hopefully, you reported that to the Insurance Commissioner. It's there job to regulate crap like that. Otherwise, why do they have jobs and a guaranteed pension? I never like to use insurance agents but if you could find a good one, they can be very helpful..

You mean the checkbook we both share? Lol.

Everything is ours. We don't do separate accounts or checkbooks. We also live a very low debt lifestyle, with mortgage being our only one. We don't even carry cc balances. I'd like to keep it that way.
Same boat as you, buddy. We got a joint account when we purchased the house since all of the expenses were shared from that point on. I'm blessed in that she is not a big shopper and pretty frugal. We divided our monthly mortgage payments in half and paid them bi-weekly which significantly shortens the amortization. Paying off the mortgage early was a huge plus. It allowed us to save for the kids university, save for vacations and get better vehicles. For our vehicles we typically save up a good down payment and borrow a little. Line of credit on the house allows us the flexibility to borrow when needed and never carry a c.c. balance. Car gets paid off within a year and then we're payment free again. Not an option for everyone but getting that mortgage paid off is such a stress reliever.

My call to the commissioner's office was made within seconds of ending the other call.

One of the most self-serving businesses, right behind being a member of Congress.

Yes, it is nice to hear the woman is okay and makes no difference who is at fault. We had an accident a year ago, where local USPS mail carrier truck, ran a stop sign, 4 blocks from our house. I was only going 20 and hit the truck broadside. Still $5000 damage. There were part shortages at the time and took 3 full months to get the car back. My insurance company would have given me a loaner, but we used our second vehicle instead. We are retired folks.

Yes, you do have to watch out for what insurance company you elect to go with. Make sure you go over the policy for car and home coverage, including content coverage. Also, take dated pictures to be stored in your safety deposit box and or give to a family member. Update as needed.
