Remember too that Monoprice measure their drivers differently. Their 13" might as well be a 15" by almost everyone else's standards.
I think Monolith only did this to not confuse the two "fitteens."

Ha. Then their 16" might as well be an 18" right? Is that just for those 2 new models or are all of their THX sub drivers measured that way?

I think it is.
@shadyJ ?

IIRC, they measured it as Piston Diameter on the new Designs, which is the diameter from 1/2 surround to 1/2 surround.
My SI SQL15s are 12.75" dia by this measurement.

I just thought about that. I've been telling everyone that about Monoprice, but I might need to start including a qualifier. That might only be true for those 2 right now.

Yeah... I don't recall if it was in the review or the thread where Shady mentioned this, but he does bring it up.

Lol, I don't remember. To be sure, you should ask Hobie, the product manager. The 16" uses a big cone but it isn't quite the cone size of a normal 18" if I recall right. I wouldn't be concerned about the cone size but rather the performance numbers, which certainly performs on the level of a lot of 18"s.

Yeah... I don't recall if it was in the review or the thread where Shady mentioned this, but he does bring it up.
This is what Shady said in the review.

"The cast aluminum basket for the driver is very large; it measures 15” from frame edge to frame edge, and most other subwoofer manufacturers would simply call this a 15” driver, but the moving surface area is that of a 13”. The driver uses the basket of a 15” so that there is room for the spider and surround which the wide diameter of the basket supplies. This larger space is needed because it is more difficult to have the right suspension compliance for high excursions in smaller baskets since smaller suspension areas normally entail tighter compliance and therefore shorter throws. This is doubly true for this driver because the large diameter of the voice coil former takes up so much space. The surround is also quite sizable with a 1” height and 1 ¾” width; that should enable the moving assembly a very long throw before high tension restricts motion. The underside of the surround has a radial grooved structure that could possibly assist in keeping surround deformation more uniform at high excursions, thus reducing distortion."

Also he notes- "The most notable visual feature is the beefy-looking driver; the surround is huge. Monoprice specifies this as a 13” cone, but it looks much larger".

So the basket is to accomodate the massive assembly and a large surround, but the bottom line is "other manufacturers would simply call this a 15" driver.". Just reading the review makes me want one!

I pulled a couple of quotes from your review of the 13 that do pretty good describing the driver. You're review and pics of that monster driver make me want a few of those!

Does he actually exist anymore? :p

I haven't seen a post from him anywhere it matters in a while. He straight up ghosted the HTP-1 Owners thread. Not a big deal to me, but there are a few butt-sore users that want their hand held right now.
:)

Regardless...
I do want to be clear, I always respected his posts over there and thought it was cool he was popping in and giving updates and such.
I don't think a post of his went by I didn't thank him for, and I don't even own one!
I hope he is well and they keep pushing out the new gear they have been. The Class D amps will be very cool, I think.
Regarding the HTP-1, I had heard a rumor somewhere that there may have been a problem where they assemble them and they aren't even doing that. Previously there had been a note that some of the boards they needed to populate the machine were unavailable. Yet more noise has indicated they are working on something else...
*shrugs

End of the day, if you compare the 13 to the rythmik fv15hp, it performs very well. Same for the 16 to the fv18. IIRC, the 13 is less expensive that the Rythmik15. The 16 was more expensive than the 18.

Hobie is still around, but I am not sure if he has time for all these social media venues.

As for the Monolith 16" vs the Rythmik FV18, the Monolith 16", they are about the same price, but the Monolith 16" has a major performance advantage over the FV18. More proof that you can't judge subs by cone size.

which sub do suggest for music only 2 channel set up?

In case nobody has thrown this into the discussion, I would add PASSIVE subs so you can use your OWN amps and never have to worry about the built-in sub amp ever malfunctioning. :D

Depends on the room and... well, the room really. All else being equal I wouldn't change my recommendation at all. I like either the 15" or the 13" for you. Even for music only I still like them best. If you're feeling a little splurgey get the 13! I'm really digging the way it looks and the performance is even a little bit better than the 15 for deep bass.
