I do plan to do the automatic microphone based volume calibration, but I haven't gotten around to it.

Check out the manual's setup section, both automatic and manual, usually a pretty good guide. You probably just need to learn a bit about it and what settings accommodate what....but ask about anything that doesn't make sense....
