So. Our local high school decided to replace the usual homecoming tradition and festivities with something called the above and beyond”award. I don’t really know what the Fukk is the big idea. In fact, the student council officially voted AGAINST this, and it still passed. How the Fukk does THAT happen?
So I just signed a petition going around to hopefully overturn the ruling. It’s only a couple hundred votes from the 1500 needed. I think it’s fine if they want to implement an award designated as “above and beyond” as a measure of achievement. But it should be for academic achievement, or being the best overall human in the class or something like that. Like I asked in another thread.
What the Fukk is wrong with people…

It’s nonsense. It’s hardly an achievement to go above and beyond when they’ve lowered the bar to the f#%kin’ ground.:D

That’s a fact. Seems like rolling over the bar has never been easier.
I just can’t figure out what the hell the point is, of ditching the homecoming traditions for……..

If people keep coddling and enabling these poor kids by dumbing it all down, , there will be one hell of a Home Coming when the stupid little f#%kers can’t hack it in the real world and have to come back home. If you are a strict hard ass insisting on a high standard and your kids resent you, keep it up. They will thank you later. Just don’t forget to kiss and hug ‘em after you rap ‘em in the mouth.:D

Adults often complain and joke about participation awards instead of handing trophies or medals to just the winners. Well, wind forward 10 years and ask my son what he thinks about the participation medals that he received in grade school. Even he thinks that they were silly and pointless. Kids are not so stupid that they can't see through meaningless gestures.

What's normally involved in the homecoming tradition? Is it much different really?

I agree. I hate what’s happening with kids out there. We definitely try and make sure our kids are challenged at home and school. And I remind them that I’m ok if you fail while trying your hardest. But if you fail while phoning it in, you’re on the shitt list. In fact our oldest one does great by phoning it in, and it’s been hard to get him to really dig in and see what he can do. He’s 19 and in college so it’s a little tougher. It’s still my job to push though! And as tough on them as we are, they know love here. I remind myself from time to time to ask myself, am I doing a good job. Because I know if I don’t ask the question, I’m surely not.

I know my kids could sympathize with yours!Kids definitely can smell Bullshitt. And I think for that reason it’s even more insulting to them, not beneficial. I hate that participation medals even exist. I mean, there has to be a winner, and there has to be a loser. What that does, is teaches you to try harder next time. Figure out why you lost, and don’t do that again. You can’t win every single time, and imo it builds character to lose and come back better. Giving awards just to show up is fukked.

Well usually there are things like a parade, and pep rally’s, football game, and notably a dance where the king and queen are named. I think for some these things aren’t a big deal. But for most of the people and kids I’ve known, it’s a rite of passage being involved with the activities like float building, and cheering for your team and voting on king and queen, I think that’s a big one. Everybody gets to be part of something and it builds camaraderie. I think what they’re doing here is narrowing it down to a single awards ceremony circumventing all the fanfare.
I’m not clear on what they are dissolving at this point. I will be paying attention. Maybe the school will back down and nothing will change. Like I said, the student body voted against it, but somehow that was overridden. We’ll see.

Yeah, it's all superficial bullshit, but at least the kids are engaged. The theater queens fawn over the shop guys and build floats together. The players get roid acne and the girls going out for Home Coming Queen develop eating disorders that will plague them for years. It all goes down with clingy parents cheering and the rough and tumble kids heckling from the sidelines. It’s Americana I tell you!:D

Not much of a football guy, particularly back in high school days (I didn't play but maybe some flag during PE or touch in the park with a few friends but was more into baseball back then) and going to school dances wasn't something I did particularly either (preferred going to live concerts and do my dancing there)...not sure if we had much beyond the prom either as far as a dance went, but do think they would announce king and queen in the school paper? Been a while :) I went to an academic high school, too, and while varsity sports were a thing but kinda spread out in terms of numbers of participants/supporters with a variety of activities other than football (baseball, golf, basketball, swimming, track, etc) plus I don't think any of the teams had done particularly well standings-wise for a while, too, altho I think the golf team was city champs while I was there; I do remember them becoming a city-wide baseball power for a while several years later.

Wonder how much of a road trip return celebration was involved in any case as all the teams were in the same city, and San Francisco is only about 7 x 7 miles in size.

Ok this is somewhat true. Lmao!
Greatest country in the world! Part of what I saw was not naming king and queen. And I think it’s ridiculous to change that to be more “PC” or friendly to “the community” as my daughter would say. Idk. We’ll see what shakes out.

Interesting. I also played baseball, but was in band, and played in bands. Never was a dancer either. But still, it was fun being involved with everybody. My school was pretty small compared to anything out in SF so maybe the vibe was just different?

It was a fairly large high school, think we had 3300 some odd students while I was there (and only a three year school). Big city schools I would imagine quite different from a rural school in quite a few ways. No experience there myself altho in the small town I live in now there's a very small high school (total 230 students in a combined junior/senior high, grades 7-12) nearest high schools to play are a fairly long drive (closest about 25 miles away) but I think sports here I think are just more popular per capita than where I went. Many of the students at my hs were primarily focused on getting into college, extracurricular activities varied quite a bit among the student population, sports weren't important to a lot of them (us).....pretty sure sports were a bigger part for the rest of the high schools in the city, which were not restricted academically like ours was (took basically a 4.0 gpa to get in, if not higher :) ).

I kid you all, but I ain’t judgin’. When my Freshman class drew up what was the worst piece of s#%t float imaginable, I single handedly redesigned it and was given complete carte blanche. It was my masterpiece. But, I peaked early and it was all downhill from there. Been a hell of a ride, though.;) F#%kin’ censors.

Well the good thing about going downhill is it takes much less work!!! Congratulations on the float.
