I had a hilarious conversation with my mom about this. She complained about participation trophies when I was little. 32 years ago. She also complains about millennials. I'm a millennial.

I had to gently remind her that not only did her generation (baby boomers) create participation trophies, but they also raised the millennial generation they all love to complain about. That had somehow escaped her.

Not only that, a high school diploma is pretty much a participation trophy anyway. At least it was at mine. You had to actively try NOT to graduate. My friends and I crashed the band banquet (we were all former band..folks, ran through in halloween costumes) and a lot of us didn't get to walk the stage, but they still let us graduate.

Fun times.

Boomers and Millennials always forget about the Latchkey kids(Gen X). We were raised by boomers and some of us were dumb enough to turn around and have our own kids, the Millennials. We have been squeezed out by the two most self-important generations this country ever produced, present company excluded of course. No worries, I eat my fruits and vegetables and plan on outliving the lot of them. I'm only partly kidding. The schools started changing after WWII and REALLY started changing in the 60's. Despite ad campaigns to the contrary, too many children now have been left behind. Your kids' real education should take place at home so they'll know what they are up against when they walk the halls of the caged Propaganda Factory serving up toxic s#%t in the classroom AND the cafeteria. Yes, I am a product of the public school system. Isn't that reason enough to fix it now?

Latchkey kids were around long before GenX. One good thing about it before I got a key is that we had neighbors who were willing to care for us until mom came home. The couple near my house acted as our grandparents, giving us snacks, caring for minor wounds, finding some kind of project for us to do, fixing our bikes, etc.

I was going to start a thread asking how a country with as many people of working age could possibly have a worker shortage but after seeing some of this crap, I don't think I need to.

It's almost as if parents and schools are telling kids "Just sit there and look pretty (well, not you, you and you, but the others can). Group hug, everyone!".

I hear you. There are a great many reasons for what is going on. The 70’s saw divorce rates skyrocket and why I mentioned Gen X as the 80’s saw many more latchkey kids. But, that’s another issue. The kids are being kept ignorant on purpose. You can’t exercise your rights to, well, anything if you don’t have a clue what they are or how to do it. Parents haven't helped their kids’ cause by rolling over for every new policy that comes along to further the dumbing down of the public schools. They may as well make the sheep dog the mascot of every school in America.
