Not much of a football guy, particularly back in high school days (I didn't play but maybe some flag during PE or touch in the park with a few friends but was more into baseball back then) and going to school dances wasn't something I did particularly either (preferred going to live concerts and do my dancing there)...not sure if we had much beyond the prom either as far as a dance went, but do think they would announce king and queen in the school paper? Been a while
I went to an academic high school, too, and while varsity sports were a thing but kinda spread out in terms of numbers of participants/supporters with a variety of activities other than football (baseball, golf, basketball, swimming, track, etc) plus I don't think any of the teams had done particularly well standings-wise for a while, too, altho I think the golf team was city champs while I was there; I do remember them becoming a city-wide baseball power for a while several years later.
Wonder how much of a road trip return celebration was involved in any case as all the teams were in the same city, and San Francisco is only about 7 x 7 miles in size.
