SACD 5.1 from Sony UBP-X700

Be sure the disc is a 5.1 multichannel SACD (a lot of them are only 2 channel)

Be sure DSD is enabled on the Sony otherwise it will send PCM instead of DSD.

In the Audio Settings, make sure that both Digital Audio Output and DSD Output Mode are set to "Auto".

If you don't get a 5 channel playback from a SACD having the 5 Ch layer, then your UBP-X700 is most likely defective.

Yes, good points. The Digital Audio Output should be set to Auto by default. The DSD Output setting will be set to Off after a reset of the player and will result in PCM output even if Digital Output is set to Auto. So, Auto for both to get DSD output. But, even if it converts to PCM, a multi channel SACD should still play and display Multich PCM 5.1 176.4kHz from the Onkyo Info display rather than DSD 5.1 2.8MHz. Still curious about the disc in use here. The player display can be misleading as it will display DSD Multi 2.8MHz/1bit even when converting to PCM with no indicator that it is doing so. If playing the CD layer, the player will display Stereo 44.1 kHz/16bit.

This wouldn’t be the “O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU?” disc, would it? The label on that one can be a bit confusing as it refers to a 5.1 mix but the white label indicates SACD Stereo. Too bad, as the “PO LAZARUS” track would have sounded great in 5.1. Maybe there is an Atmos mix in its future.

Ya for a few months I was using my x800 in PCM 176 until I asked for help here. I think it was PENG who helped me back then. I had to get my Dark Side of the Moon SACD working in DSD. :)

The truth is PCM 176 also sounds pretty good too. :)

I have set the Music Settings correctly but will run through the other settings as you have suggested in a day or so. Thank you for such a detailed explanation. I am hoping this cures the problem.

It is a 5.1 channel SACD. I am still trying different settings to get it to play sound!

I understand you were in the Music Settings. In those settings, the Super Audio CD Playback Layer should be set to Super Audio CD. Below it, the Super Audio CD Playback Channel should be set to DSD Multi. Now, back out of the Music Settings and into the Setup menu and select Audio Settings. The DSD Output Mode may be set to Off. If so, change it to Auto. These settings should enable 5.1 playback of a SACD if it contains a multi channel track. To check the signal while playing the disc, press the RECEIVER button on the Onkyo remote control. Then , press the HOME button. From the list of items, select INFO to see the audio and video codecs at play. BE AWARE: Changes to the audio settings will not take effect unless the disc is ejected and then reinserted into the player.
Hi. I've followed these instructions but still no sound, even though the TV screen shows that the SACD is playing the multi channel 5.1.
In the Audio Settings menu, there are 48khz, 96khz and 192khz PCM options. Which one of these should I set?

That setting is for the coaxial digital output. PCM setting should output audio from a multichannel SACD from HDMI at 176.4kHz regardless of that setting.

The SACD I am trying to get sound from, is the Tony Visconti produced 2003 SACD of Electric Warrior by T. Rex. It is a true 5.1 Surround Sound as this is displayed with the time counter moving on the Samsung TV. When I play a 4k BluRay, on my current settings/connections, the AVR produces full 7.1.
I have two other players in the set-up, a Panasonic BluRay player and a Panasonic Hard Drive Recorder, both of which play as they should through HDMI.
Should the Sony player be connected direct to the Onyko AVR and which input should be used - BD/DVD? Due to the location of this set up, I have to move most of the equipment to get to the rear of the Onkyo, so I may not reply for a day or so.

Well, that was my next question as you seemed to indicate that the player was connected directly to the Onkyo in a prior post. It MUST be connected directly to the Onkyo for DSD and PCM from a multichannel SACD.

You are in a pickle as the TV is UHD capable and the Onkyo is not UHD capable. I believe you are using the TX-SR608, yes?

And you are using ARC for audio back to Onkyo from TV and using Smart TV streaming apps?

Based on the equipment in use, I'd make a few changes. I would connect any device/player that is HD(1080p) directly to the Onkyo. The Sony I would connect to the TV with a cable from the HDMI 1 port and also connect it to the Onkyo's BD/DVD input with a cable from the Sony's HDMI 2 port. This will get you 4K video to the TV and lossless audio to the Onkyo that includes Dolby TrueHD, DTS HD Master Audio, DSD and multichannel PCM 176.4kHz. Turn off HDMI-CEC(Anynet+) in the TV and Onkyo. Connect the TV to the Onkyo with an optical cable if not connected that way already. If you leave ARC on with this connection setup, you may have issues with the TV changing the input on the Onkyo when trying to play something from the Sony. Do not worry about losing out on anything with the optical connection for streaming apps. No app streams lossless audio anyway and you want the best audio and video you can get out of the Sony. Set it up this way, and you will get DSD 5.1 from your SACDs to the Onkyo.

Hi. The Sony is connected to the TV through the HDMI 1 input. That is probably why a 4k film plays in 7.1, sounds fantastic. I will be looking over the connection's this weekend and hope your suggestions help me with the problem. I'll update you when the set up is as you have put forward. Thank you for your advice.

Yes, connect the Sony to the avr. Is there a particular reason you connected the Sony to the tv originally?

I just put it there as I believed it to be the right connection!
