I have the 700 and unable to access the 5.1 surround sound but can access the 2 channel. I have changed the settings in the Music Menu to SACD 5.1 and the TV displays this and the disc plays but no sound is heard. Any advice?
To what, is the player connected, and how so?

Hi.
It's connected to an Onkyo TR-608 amp by HDMI and a Samsung TV. I believe this connection works as it should, as a 4k film disc plays audio and video just by placing it in the disc tray.

The hdmi is from the Sony player to the Onkyo avr? You get multich audio fine from a 4k bluray?

So, HDMI 1 to Onkyo? HDMI 1 to TV and HDMI 2 to Onkyo? HDMI 1 to TV and ARC to Onkyo?

Yes, it's connected directly to the Onyko amp and audio and video are fine from 4k bluray disc.

Seems like it's a settings issue still, maybe even try a soft reset (unplug it for a while) of the player....you are sure it's a multich sacd? (had to ask) What sound modes have you tried in the Onkyo?

Set the player to output PCM.

Yes, it is a multi channel. The 2.1 CD layer plays. I'll try a reset as you've suggested and I'll get back to you with the outcome! Thank you.

fThe reason you set player to PCM is the AVR may not be in a condition to receive DSD., or the receiver requires PCM input for bass management.

Hi. I've unplugged the unit and left it off for a while and now it's not playing the 2.0 layer!

The Onkyo seems to have the ability to handle dsd from what I saw in the manual (and my older Onkyo avr also does).

I'm of the opinion that the amp may not be able to handle the SACD. I've been through the settings and they are as they should be.
Having turned the Sony player off for a while, it now won't play the standard 2.0 layer of the CD!

In the avr's manual pg 35 it indicates it can handle 5.1 dsd (and in a footnote indicates perhaps you'd prefer instead to have your player convert it and send to the avr via pcm). What are settings "as they should be"?

OK, turning the player off and on again to experience no play of the stereo layer is an indication of the player's laser module malfunctioning or a bad disc. Also, be sure that the player is set to 5.1 preference.

The settings I refer to are the speaker settings. I have yet to try it with it set to PCM. I'll do this and reply again. Thank you for you help so far.

I will try it with the setting of PCM and let you know. It may not be fir a couple of days, though. Thank you for your suggestion.

It may be a couple of days before I am able to try this, bear with me!

I've tried to upload images of the OSD of the Sony player, showing the settings but the file is too big!
I have tried to play the SACD with the setting changed to PCM but still no sound through the system.

I understand you were in the Music Settings. In those settings, the Super Audio CD Playback Layer should be set to Super Audio CD. Below it, the Super Audio CD Playback Channel should be set to DSD Multi. Now, back out of the Music Settings and into the Setup menu and select Audio Settings. The DSD Output Mode may be set to Off. If so, change it to Auto. These settings should enable 5.1 playback of a SACD if it contains a multi channel track. To check the signal while playing the disc, press the RECEIVER button on the Onkyo remote control. Then , press the HOME button. From the list of items, select INFO to see the audio and video codecs at play. BE AWARE: Changes to the audio settings will not take effect unless the disc is ejected and then reinserted into the player.
