Not sure if this is what you're looking for @3db, but here are a couple of shots I just took:

Did some listening again last night with my son after we watched Loki. I went and adjusted some of the dB levels of the speakers. The music and sound effects are sounding pretty good in the Dolby modes now, but the dialog still sounds (as my son put it) 'like you're listening under water'. So, it is getting better for the most part. Hopefully once the YPAO microphone arrives, I'll be able to get it all dialed in.

No. I've had it since new. But never really played around with it with my old speakers.

@Mark E. Long : the amp assignment was definitely one of the issues. It was set to 'Basic' (whatever that means). So I turned it to 9 channel. Boom. The rear speakers now work for stereo.

I also turned up the dB to various levels on all of the speakers. Then I turned on the Dolby sound modes. At first I thought it was 'fixed' (it definitely sounded better), then my daughter walked into the HT room and (without me even saying anything to her) asked me why it sounded so (her exact word) "muffled". So I turned it to 9 channel stereo, and she looked at me and said "way better".

I'll try playing around with the EQ at some point, and when the YPAO microphone arrives next week I'll run that and see, but for now I have full surround sound using the 9 channel stereo mode and it sounds awesome.

Thanks for all the help troubleshooting guys. Muchly appreciated.

Cheers,

Sounds to me like maybe center channel has a blown tweeter (makes the high crisp treble sounds).

If that was blown or let's say on back of speaker you are missing the jumpers between 2 reds and 2 blacks,(and hooked speaker wire just to red and black on bottom - usually for bass drivers) the sound would be muffled..

also turn off all Yamaha junky modes... like virtual speakers, any volume control features etc...

How is projector connected? Why no 4K HDR? Yeah, sounds like speaker issue. Check it, maybe swap one out to see if you get better sound from another.

Nevermind, 2040 not HDCP 2.2, so no 4K according to Yamaha.

I think you just figured it out for me. Damn. The jumpers between the 2 red and 2 blacks. They fell off when I was attaching the wires, and I never put them back on. Crap. I'll do that when I get home later. Sometimes the simplest solution is the solution (fingers crossed).

Cheers.

What the..?

You're kidding us, and you knew the jumpers weren't in place? So I take it you're not passive bi amping? That's fine as it's not generally recommended anyway, but yeah, you have to have the jumpers in place for the speakers to work correctly.

Just to be sure now, you know how those jumpers go between the binding posts? DO NOT attempt any kind of bi wire or bi amping once the jumpers are back in place.

It looks like the puzzle is solved. To the OP, we all assumed that you wired it correctly. First trouble shooting step ALWAYS.. check your wiring. :)

I'd completely forgotten until @Muad'dib mentioned it. My son was helping me wire up the speakers. He told me they fell off when he was attaching the wires. I said to make sure they were put back on, and then I was doing something else. Completely forgot to re attach them.

Hooked the binding posts back up last night. Didn't have time to mess around with anything though as I had company that showed up right as I finished putting my ATS back up. Will fool around with it tonight and report back.

And boom, just like that the "problem" was fixed. I actually watched Black Widow on Disney + last night (that's what my company was here for) but didn't have time to fiddle with/change any settings.

We watched it and it sounded great, but I thought I'd left it on 9 Channel stereo. Turns out, I'd left it on Dolby Pro Logic II (Movie). I'm in there now just trying out the different Dolby modes and it sounds amazing.

Thanks for all the hints, help and suggestions guys. I'm super excited now to watch another movie in here tonight.

No particular reason, I'd just left it there when I was playing with rhe settings the other night I guess.
That's an upmixer mode somewhat indicating the source is 2ch. Just curious what you've got going there.

ps might be addressing upmixing from 5.1 upwards too but PLIIx or z would be more appropriate....
