I already knew the answer to my question. I watch the news (domestically, BBC, CNN) and have several doctors in my family.
We will only know how long vaccine-induced immunity to this virus lasts when enough time has passed for us to see diminished immunity. That assumes the SARS-CoV-2 virus lingers long enough to be a continuing problem. At present, all thoughts about how long immunity may last are guesses. Some guesses may be educated guesses, some not. But none of them can be considered reliable predictions. My own guess is that immunity will last somewhere between 1 year and a lifetime.
I read this thread with much interest but I am really fed up with this thread becoming an anti-EU thread under the leadership of his Lordship TLS Guy. The people in the EU (me included) know very well the shortcomings/failures of the EU.
I agree with Irvrobinson when he said "Some of our US state governors are making so many illogical decisions about COVID19 responses that I think we're running a good contest on ill-conceived plans with several EU countries and the EU government."

I also agree with your impatience with some of what His Lordship :) TLS Guy has said. However, his experience after a career as an Intensive Care physician, allows valuable insight on this subject. He knows first hand what happens to seriously ill patients when they must go on aggressive life support, including lung ventilators. While I sometimes disagree with him, I also defend his presence here.
So to all of you; for this thread please stick to the subject i.e. COVID-19 …
I'm with you. I have tried asking for the same, several times. So has Mr._Clark. For what it's worth, most of the political diversions seem to come only when there is little real news about Covid-19.

If you are resident in the UK, then you are among that rapidly shrinking group of what are not as 'Remoaners".

Out of curiosity; how long again are these vaccines (jabs/shots) effective ?
There is a little information to give a clue. You can extrapolate date from the Oxford MERS vaccine that immunity could well last as long as two years.

We will soon have data on individuals from the phase three studies. However there is already a hint that vaccine immunity may well be longer than natural immunity.
So, we will have to be patient. Time will tell. But if it has to be a yearly shot that is not the end of the world, in of itself.

There is a bigger issue, in that there is very legitimate concern over viral vector vaccines resulting in development of antibodies to the viral vectors and rendering the vaccines useless over time, unless the viral vector is changed year on year. The other issue for the mRNA vaccines is allergies to the nanoparticle shields to the mRNA. An article this week in JAMA does show some increase in anaphylaxis to the second dose of mRNA vaccines, more so with Moderna.

So, all this will have to be intensively studied. We are breaking new ground fast, which serious crises have had a habit of forcing throughout history. In short, "these are not your father's vaccines". I'm sure there will be still be much to learn.

The UK left the EU; it was the people's choice and that hasn't changed how I feel about them.
Even if that rapidly shrinking group turns to zero; who cares ?

I got my first poke yesterday with Pfizer. My upper arm is sore, and I felt a little foggy later. Otherwise nothing else.

Perhaps more of a wish than a "real" prediction as they make COVID vaccines. I certainly hope.
I see it like a booster shot, and one day, who knows when covid might just be a thing of the past.

When I got my first shot, the nurse said , while you wait that 15 mins, please move that arm, as it has proven to reduce the soreness, and so I moved my arm all around for 15 mins, and dang the rest of the day and the next my arm wasn't sore.. Also I was advised to get the shot in my dominate arm which keeps the arm mobile. So its the same arm for my second in 3 days.

I guess different sates have different vaccine plans. I know here in Fla, they opened up 60 and over stating this coming Monday. It had been 65 and older. The eligibility will be across the board, at state run sites and retail pharmacy locations.

This is in addition to the existing requirements necessary for COVID-19 vaccine, which include: K-12 teachers, law enforcement officers and firefighters 50 years of age and older, and those deemed extremely vulnerable to COVID-19 by their physician and of course medical workers.

I'm in the 1b+ eligibility group in Illinois, but there are no appointments available anywhere for me to get the vaccine. They had opened up a large vaccination site in Chicago proper that was originally going to be open to anyone eligible after a few days of only being open to those 65+ for a few days. Well, mere hours before it was supposed to open up to anyone eligible they changed the requirements for it to only be eligible to people living in Chicago. They did say they would honor previously made appointments for those over 65 not living in Chicago, but two days later they canceled those appointments as well. It has been a complete clusterf*ck. At this point my best bet seems to be waiting for my job to be approved as a closed access site so that it can vaccinate it's employees.

IMO, it's unfortunate that the 30% of the population who say they won't get vaccinated don't think like you.

I’m also somewhat jealous of people who’ve gotten vaccinated and I had the same thought (that jealousy is weird in this situation).

Just to add another layer of weirdness, I’m so anxious to get vaccinated I feel like a kid about 2 weeks before Christmas. It’s getting closer but it’s still just out of reach.

A complete clusterf*ck is a good description of what I've experienced in Maryland. There are at least a dozen different ways to get vaccinated. None of their sign up systems coordinate with each other. They are totally decentralized.

Politically, Maryland is weird. In most national elections it votes solidly Democratic (~60% in the 2020 election). There is a solidly Democratic State House, but the Governor is GOP. He usually has to play ball with the State House in order to get anything done. He's also spoken out against Trump. But now, he chose to make vaccination a 'deregulated' clusterf*ck. Everyone suspects he craves election to higher office, US Senator or President, and he's maneuvering at being more Republican just to survive the primary election.

My wife and I are in the 65-75 age group. The entire month of February was a frustrating mess. My wife did succeed at getting herself an appointment for late Feb, but I could never get through the jammed web site. I went with her on Feb. 26, and yes, I got jealous. And I got angry at my state governor.

I had learned from a friend in Richmond, VA that it's easy to get vaccinated in North Carolina, about 1½ hour drive away. No questions were asked about age, residence, or eligibility. So, I signed up too. Last week, I drove 3½ hours to get my first shot (Moderna). While I was there, I asked what their policy was about vaccinating non-residents or people younger than 65. They said they've already vaccinated all people in that county who were 65 or older, or who required vaccination for their job or medical reasons. So, now they're vaccinating anyone who signs up.

I've already got an appointment for dose 2, on April 2nd, also in NC. I now have ZERO respect for my governor and his clusterf*ck ideas of decentralizing vaccinations in Maryland.

Hang in there. Everything might change in a week or two. Or, you may have to go to Indiana or Wisconsin :D.

All I did was receive an email from my boss about signing up and 2-3 days later was in. I was at the low end of the list initially but because I fall under "food service" employee got in early. I wonder if it also had to do with a lack of people signing up?

Yeah, it's decentralized here too, and even though Illinois has enacted 1B+ groups, each county can decide individually whether or not they want to vaccinate people in 1B+ yet. I'm signed up with at least 6 different services, doctor's offices, medical facilities, pharmacies, etc. to get updates on when stuff is available. My job considers me an essential employee and our department was one of the few staffing the site at all times even during all the lockdowns, so if they get approval, we'll be at the top of the list to get it there. What worries me is that I'm the sole breadwinner because my wife's back is terrible and she can't work because of it. If something were to happen to me we'd both be screwed. I wouldn't mind a drive to Wisconsin. Never been there. Indiana's roads are awful, I'll stay away. :D
