Sterling, the .243 Ackley , basically a .243 with the taper removed, shoulder bumped to 40 degrees thus yielding a 10% increase in powder capacity is one fine varmint cartridge. Clarence Hammonds, Red Lion, Pa smithed the gun for me. Rem 40x action, Shilen barrel, 14 twist, Timney trigger, MacMillian MBR stock, glass is a Nikon 8-32. My choice of the 14 twist was to maximize the effectiveness of a 70 gr Nosler Ballistic tip.
Living in Pa I'm well aware of the 1000 yd shoot, after all it is outside of Williamsport, Pa where the legends grew !
One of my local clubs has a 500 meter range and offers high power silhouette matches, plenty of .308's present there. Some of the Creedmore offerings are becoming quite popular
