Yamaha RX-V1 as a 2 channel system

Hello all,

I have recently inherited this receiver and would like to set it up with a pair of old Cerwin Vega speakers that I have sitting around.

I have attempted to go through the menu on the OSD for the receiver and set up as much as I could for only 2 speakers. Main - Large, Centre - none, sub - none, etc...

I have also turned off everything I can see for "effects", so no Jazz, Pop, etc.. settings are on.

But still the sound is just not right. It sounds very distant and echoing, no bass.

The other thing I notice is that I cant adjust the Bass, Treble or Balance at the front of the receiver. Something tells me I am missing something in the menu that is doing this.

Maybe this receiver just was not built to act as a 2 channel?

I am hoping someone has experience on this receiver and can help me out.
Any advise appreciated.

Check and see if the speakers are in phase. Out of phase will result in cancellation of bass and a disembodied sort of sound.

Yes. Hopefully the solution is that simple, and based on your description it was the first thing that popped into my head. Reverse polarity on just one of the speakers and see if it doesn't snap things back into focus and restore the bass.

With the speakers set to large and the goofy ambience modes deactivated, it should work. If you've engaged 'pure direct' or whatever it is, that's probably why the tone controls are defeated.

The speaker wires are definitely connected to the front-left and front-right "A" channel posts on the receiver right? Just getting that out of the way as it's usually the simple things that get me ;)

If all else fails with the menus/settings, see if there is a reset that will bring the unit back to it's factory settings.

This model was discontinued a solid 14+ years ago. I certainly worked with them back in the day, but never as a 2.0 setup. You do want to ensure that your audio is set to 'stereo' so that it isn't trying to introduce surround sound into the setup in any way.

You also want to be sure you are connected to the MAIN->A outputs of the receiver. Not the 'Front' connections as they are different.

It is a beast of an A/V receiver, and should be very solid for stereo audio. No HDMI really makes it near useless today for top shelf surround sound, but a TV with optical audio out would still make this one pretty hard to beat.

Looks like I got that backwards, but as BMXTRIX points out it's the terminals marked main on that receiver.
Yamaha certainly did a good job of separating everything and marking them on that unit, some are packed in there and poorly marked.

Thanks guys.... I got it to work, finally got the bass, treble and balance buttons to work properly. I must have had something "on" or "off" in the setup, but now there is a bigger issue...

I have static and very little music coming out of the right channel. Tried all of the right side speaker outputs and all have the same problem. Gave it a couple taps on the sides and top of the receiver and I did notice a difference. So I gave it a few more and the sound came back to normal. I am afraid that the right channel may be on its way out...

Why would tapping the sides of the unit make the sound come back?

I have an old Onkyo amp that started randomly dropping one channel.
I was able to isolate the RCA inputs as the problem area because much like your tapping, I could move the input cables and get the dropped channel back.
Years of vibration, etc..had broken a few solder joints on the circuit board and that was causing my problem.
The fix for me was simply pulling a few panels and the effected circuit board so I could solder the breaks I found. It was a 20 minute job and the amp is going strong once again.

If you can further isolate the problem area within your receiver without electrocuting yourself, you may find it's an easy fix.
Or you might decide it's better left to a technician at which point you'll need to figure the costs involved vs value of the unit.
Best of luck.

Bad connection points inside could be failing. The fact that the receiver was discontinued nearly 15 years ago means that things are just breaking down. You may want to move the speakers from the 'A' connection points to the 'B' connection outputs and see if those are more reliable overall. There is no real difference between the two connections, but you just need to go to the front panel and ensure that the 'B' channels are activated. Typically this may be a push button.

@giovanni1 -- I'm currently dealing with this same issue. I'm realizing that there are different speaker setups for this unit, and you need to configure it to what you're running, or I believe it can cause impedance issues. Now...how to get to the setup menu is beyond me.

Ah -- got it -- found it here. https://www.manualslib.com/manual/267254/Yamaha-Rx-V1.html?page=46#manual -- apparently the bottom of this remote slides down to reveal the setup controls. I had never noticed that. I hadn't run into this issue in the past because I had enough speakers running that I wasn't noticing any issues, but now that i'm running only 2 channels (and just disconnected my velodyne sub to service it) these issues manifested.

Anyway, hop into that menu, and let it know which speakers you do and don't have, and that should fix you up...if it doesn't you've got larger issues my friend.

YES, the bottom of the remote has more buttons. Took me a while to realize it as well.

Anyway, I found some info saying that many others have had this issue with this receiver. It has something to do with the way the speaker terminals on the back of the unit are positioned. Overtime they oxidyze and the dropout occurs.

I also found the receiver to be very sensitive with speakers. If just one (+/-) is crossed, it automatically shuts down.

And the proper OHM setting must be correct (matched with the speakers).

It shuts down because it's protecting itself from blowing up. If you cross wires you risk blowing up any avr.

Hello Jiovanni!
Having same problem as you did
Totally confused- the only Yamaha that drives me crazy.
All issues you mentioned -I am having here,
One question thou-Do I need a remote to get rid of all this crap(DTS/DSP etc) or there is a way to avoid it?
Please advise
Respectfully

Hi Josh!
Was reading some posts and having myself the same one - cannot make it sound perfect-cannot get rid of that crap/DTS/DSP etc etc
Treble/Bass/Balance are all dead
Have the manuals but no help
One thing - no remote
Do I need it or can do it without it?
Please advise
