I found a TON of different crossover info under the Audyssey setup area. Doesn't match anything I have seen elsewhere. I'm totally in the dark as to what is driving what on this receiver at this point. 5 to 7 years of dicking with it --- not knowing what I was doing. SIGH
Don’t feel bad, I’ve been actively learning about this stuff for a while and still do the same thing.

Takes a while to go thru all the possibilities :). If your Denon was old enough you needed batpig's Denon-to-English "dictionary" :)

So as I continue to go through each setting, one area will show distance set at 6 ft, while looking under another section, like2 channel direct stereo, it shows 13.2 ft. That's what I mean by contradictory information which leaves me not knowing what is driving what. Especially the crossover information.

Some avrs had a quick set menu (good just for that session) or applying settings to just one input. Often the 2ch setup could be customized separately from the multi-ch setup, my Denons can do that.

OK, after chickening out, I have reordered the SB-2000 Pro. No matter what bookshelf I use, be it my CB-5's or a likely new purchase at some point, the Polk that I have seriously needs to be replaced. I'll have it today. :)

Merry Christmas!

As noted yesterday, I received my SVS PB-2000 which is pending setup. That said, I'm rethinking my setup and considering quality over quantity --- a KISS mindset. Rather than throwing good dollars towards a room that is an acoustical nightmare, it seems to me that a quality 3.1 setup may be a better choice. Create a decent front stage and call it a day. Am I crazy?

If I choose to go that direction, what Dolby setting on my Denon AVR 1912 would accommodate movie watching without losing the output usually directed to side and/or rear speakers?

Is 3.1 a legitimate option for my hot rod shop setup?

Thank you, Ken

Just tell the avr you've only got the LCR speakers and sub connected and it will take care of it for you. A 3.1 setup of higher quality speakers is never a bad thing....just depends how much you want surrounds and their addition to the experience which could well be limited when you're out there.....YMMV.

Agreed! It's not like I'm flopped on a couch in the sweet spot. Instead, I'm in a shop and constantly on the move from one spot to the next. And keep in mind that 70% of the time the system is dedicated to music with the TV serving as a monitor for streaming services (wifi enabled). So true cinematic experience is not likely an realistic objective. When watching movies 30% of the time, I do, however, want to FEEL the drama that the new sub and QUALITY speakers will provide --- that's the thinking.

No, you are not crazy to go for a simpler setup. The truth is that the front stage still comprises 90% of the listening experience in a surround sound system. All of the surround speaker, no matter how many of them there are, is still just a garnish on an aural experience that is presented by the front stage plus subwoofer. You will not miss the surrounds. Remember that many of the best movies ever made are recorded in monaural. and almost all of the best music are just stereo recordings. That doesn't make them any less engaging or immersive.

The surround in my workshop is partly just putting speakers to use and partly for even coverage. Not the cinematic experience at all.....mostly just music. I am a multich music fan, tho....

I had Focal 706’s in my garage for awhile and they filled it very nicely. They are front ported so placement is easy and recently discontinued, should be able to get LCR for well under $1,000 delivered. Also the inverted dome tweeter makes for great off axis listening, in other words walking around your shop.

edit add... for just over a grand you could have 5 channels.

The focal chorus 706? I looked at a couple retailers and I'm not seeing any that would deliver all three speakers for under a grand. Can you provide a link to a vendor that's selling them at that price? I would like to research the speaker.

I did a quick google search and it showed but once I clicked availability seems almost non existent. It’s out there if you hunt and have patience but if you want to click a retailer then there may be better options. I do know Focal has a huge North American supply of parts so long term support wouldn’t be an issue.

So how do the SVS Prime Bookshelf speakers stack up against something like the 706's? On paper and in real life? I do like buying local when possible, so I'm leaning towards the SVS speakers.
