How many speakers do you have? Are there labels on the back of your receiver for left, right, positive and negative etc. Can you tell us the brand and model of the receiver? If so, we can find pictures probably.

so this is the information I can give you
  • speakers -14- I believe they are all Cambridge ceiling speakers
  • weird black box downstairs- its called Russound: SDB-6.1 and it has 6 weird knobs and two buttons next to each knob which has the option to be on/off and A/B
  • another weird box next to the receiver and DVD/CD player upstairs called Russound Impedance Matching 4 pair Speaker selector SS-4.2 has 4 buttons
  • Sony CD/DVD player DVP-NS725P Precision Cinema Progressive
  • Receiver JVC RX-8000V Audio/Video Control Receiver

This was used for listening to music through the house but the receiver got unplugged and I have no idea what cable goes where. All the cables are plugged in except the ones going to the receiver. the cables that should be going to the receiver have some writing on them but i don't know that it means.

Can't you put them in a photo editor and resize them?

Are the wires still connected everywhere except the JVC receiver? How many wires are there that are unconnected (and are they in pairs or labeled in any way?)

You have a hot mess of a system there.

The picture of the back of the SDB 6.1 shows signal coming from two amplifiers (far right side of the unit). Assuming one of those is the JVC receiver, where is the second one? Adding to the confusion, the speaker wires feeding it (to the inputs) are different from anything else you’ve shown.

I’m not sure how this all worked well for whole-house music to begin with. I see no setting on the JVC for “5-channel stereo” or similar. This means anything connected to the back speakers gets a weird, processed sound.

In order for this to work at all, all speakers need to be connected to one of the Russounds. Speaker wires should go between the JVC front and rear speaker connections to the amplifier inputs of the Russounds – e.g., the front JVC speaker connections for one Russound, the rear connections for the other.

that's weird because a month ago this system worked and I played music through the whole house so I'm confused how it couldn't have worked?

What you have is a multi-zone amp powering some of the speakers and the JVC appears to be wired and powering speakers as well. If the JVC is NOT a multi-zone AVR, (it does not appear to be) one of the Russounds has to function as a switcher/control unit for the speakers that are not connected to the JVC.

The Russound amp(s) must to be connected to the JVC, or the Sony in order to receive a source signal...if no speakers play, I would start with the AVR....make sure you have a solid connection with the source...if the speakers connected to the AVR play, then you can move on to the Rossound amp and it's connection with the JVC.

My system is set up like so.

Z1...speakers (LCR+ surrounds) connected to m2200s, and Emo A500 which are connected to the pre/pro

Z2...speakers (family rm + sunroom) connected to a switch/control box which is powered by the Emo A800, which is connected to the pre/pro
  • Z2 is covers two different spaces, to control on/off and volume for both spaces (sub-zone) within the zone, I needed a switch/control box.

Z3...speakers (master bdrm) connected to the Emo A800 which is connected to the pre/pro

The Pre/pro or in your case the JVC should be assigning the source for the zone. Which might be the same source for all zones.

You need to get to the root of your system to gain a better understanding of what you're working with....again, start with speakers directly connected to the JVC.
