Thank you for that write up. Not really a fan of sports of any type.

I think your post will spur me to update and reorganize my pictures.

I should also do more YouTube uploads.

Here is an up load of a live recording made with the Revox A 700, Brenell Mk6 and dbx 1 unit.

I have commercial reel to reel Dolby B and dbx 2 encoded tapes. I also have some dbx 2 encoded LPs.

I think that is one of the most complete historic Decca collections in the world.

TLSGuy, OMG! Outstanding!. I Love Vinyl! I still have about 30+ LP's from the early 70's to mid 80's, which are still in good to very condition. LP collection was over 100 but like a dumbass I give away 75% of my collection when I pick-up my very first CD player cost me 399.00 back in 84 if I remember right it was from Radio Shack. But back to your vintage LP players a very Big Thank You for going out of your way to share with me in here! I had a dbx, it was called, dbx sound maximizer, can't remember the model and number of it, paired up with a Bob Carver amp, Sony ES AVR, my very 1st AVR. with a Sony ES 5D CD player, speaker's where Sherwin Vegas, 18" woofers, two 7" mid drivers, tweeter can't remember. TT Lab 400. Realistic, I changed out the cartridge at the time and cost me like a hundred seventy bucks in the 80s can't remember the brand or model number but it was a huge Improvement in sound quality with my vinyl. But to me? that system was my best sound wise for two channel music. LSi'15's where not even out then. Went several more systems, down graded than upgraded to LSi-15's with Emotiva XPA-2 1st gen, and XPA-5 1st. My mistake with that system was adding a Onkyo AVR 818..the pre-amp, sucked big time in it...added a Parasound two channel pre-amp..with HT bypass. It cleared up big time for two channel serious listening. That set-up cost me with HDTV close to 30 grand. For what I spent, I see now Why your with separates, and AVR pre-pros. I started with the wrong SS in the first place. I fell into a rabbit hole I couldn't get out of, would have had to sell off everthing to start over which I did at a lost. What I have now is modest at best. Low-end gear, with XPA5 1st gen I got back from my Son. Paired with mid level Yamaha 7790 and low-end M70's..which I like, but in no way do they compare to the LSi-15's Polk audios. I am telling you this only because I see now, if I would have ask the right questions with the right person who had the same passion, analog and SS gear in the first place before the system with the LSi's I wouldn't be kick around all the money lost. Sorry for the long post. My funds are low right now, but come OCTOBER of this year the first thing that gets changed out will be to a Marantz pre pro. Than my speakers, I will get with you or one of the other old timers in here if your to busy. Phil harmonic speaker's seem to be a good choice with a lot of old timers in here. Can't afford anything over 2,500 on the speakers, Pre-Pro, I will try to pick one up on Accessories4less, can't afford a brand new one. As for amp I hate to say this but I will have to stay pat with the emotiva XPA-5 1st, upgrade that next year alone with TT upgrade. Out of wind with this post..Thank you so very much and I apologize for the long-winded post..

I like to keep preamps away from Power amps. In addition the separates give you balanced and unbalanced outs. If funds permit I do think there are a lot of solid reasons for going with separates.

I have been very pleased with the sound quality of my Marantz pre/pros.

I think we can all appreciate the appeal of separates.

I do love my fully balanced Denon AVP-A1HDCI Pre-pro that has a Class-A Fully-Balanced Analog Preamp section with the best DAC that Gene has ever measured!

This beast has almost unlimited dynamics and headroom.

I have never had he chance to test the preamps, but I doubt the preamp section of a receiver is as robust as a pre/pro and I doubt the headroom is as great.

I know the headroom of my AV 8003 is massive. Headroom is an important parameter, and hardly ever tested with bench testing reports and it absolutely should be. It has a huge impact on the quality of high dynamic material especially from a wide variety of input sources. Over the years I have tested consumer grade gear with pitiful headroom. I learned years ago from Peter Walker the importance of overkill headroom in voltage gain circuits. That was just another thing he was right about.

When you say “receiver”, I assume you are referring to the $1,000 - $2,000 AVR, not the $5,500 flagship beast AVR?

Of course, the $5,500 Denon AVR-5308CI probably won’t match the headroom of the ultimate beast $7,500 Denon AVP-A1HDCI. But I am confident the $5,500 AVR-5308 can go toe-to-toe with any under-$5,000 Pre-pro out there, including the $2,600 Marantz AV 8803 pre-pro.

Thanks ADTG, I'm just lazy minded. Its why I started following, 'eMatthews' Threads, #1 his Avatar caught my eye first it's creepy. and #2. I like his Speaker's a lot. .

A full featured avr (an avr has a pre-amp section, so there's really no such thing as an "avr pre") can act as pre-pro quite well plus give you some amp channels if you need. Some think the presence of the amps will pollute the sound, tho.

Top-of-the-line Marantz AVR Accessories4less, plus you get ' 'warranty'. They way I look at using a high-end flagship AVR as a pre-pro, you have back-up if one or more of your amp, amps goes down.

Question, in your set up to the right of it standing in front of your set up. I see a chair pretty close to your right speaker. Does that chair have any effect on your Sound Stage sitting in The Sweet Spot? PS bass traps in the corner nice. Also when you ran your calibrations, did you do the 'Auto' thing? or 'manual' did you use a 'SPl'. asking cause I had 'two' Subs' set the exact same way your system is set up. I had to use A SPL get the Subs set, doing the calibration automatically,

I see your point and totally agree with your recommendations, at least for me anyways. Its' not always about, 'avr, Avr, AVR!.'. I'm out fellas. Gotta run today, shopping to do at Best Buy in the Magnolia Department.
