I've had my Dyson going on 9 years without any issues. Having said that you can't beat a Kirby. Built like a tank and picks up what other vacs leave behind. If you've got a lot of carpet and like carrying heavy things it's just right.
I wish I still had my mom's old Kirby. Or an Electrolux my next door neighbor had. OTOH I've been using Orecks that have been doing just fine for ages...think I bought the set (stand up floor, portable canister and hand vac set) something like 20 years ago....

Well, last time I've checked Kirby vac cost even more than my fancy espresso machine. Few times more

It's pretty close. Like $2k, but you should never have to buy a new one. Except it isn't bagless....

My mom had a Kirby and I'm guessing it's still running. It was given to my cousin when she passed. I was tempted, but we're also thinking of expanding the hardwood into the bedrooms in a yr or two and the loft so I'm not wanting to spend Kirby type money.

Just to present another view, I think the Dysons are plastic junk. I bought a refurbed upright 3.5 years ago, and the rod that releases the dust cup just broke. Not repairable. Once the cup fills up the whole unit goes in the dumpster.
Duly noted.

My brother-n-law (who also does the house vacuuming I guess) has the big ball version model...they don't have much carpet now, but the suction has maintained it's original strength he says....it's at least 5 yrs old.

FWIW...the Shark we have still works, but the suction is going downhill...especially on hardwood floors when it's on suction only mode....we'll go ahead and push it to the brink before we buy another one.

From my personal experience and from what I heard from others Sharks are true plastic junk.

I would say there are varying degrees of plastic junk. Unfortunately we've experienced worse, but I agree that it qualifies.

In a previous life, I used to repair vacuum cleaners. One of the most robust little machines was a canister type made by a company named "Interstate (which I think, IIRC, was a subsidiary of McDonnell Douglas) Engineering." The model was known as "Compact." Solid alloy body with wrinkle finish, a cyclonic fill action that always left the cloth bag portion in front of the (large for it's size) motor clear so that it retained full power even as the bag filled up. It's only problem really, is that it was retro ugly, Jetson like.

I recently built Jeff Bagby's Continuum speakers, which I am quite fond of. Right after, I went to look for the kit again and saw it was out of stock due to the tweeter, the RS28A-4, being NLA so, apparently I got one of the last complete kits. One of the reasons I do DIY, beyond the quality/value aspect, is serviceability over the long haul. I keep things I like forever which is why I 'usually' choose carefully. It kind of irked me that the tweeter was NLA, and I'm not savvy enough to imagine a replacement and the RS28A is rather well known as being a pretty good tweeter.

During an unrelated search on PE, I found replacement diaphragms for the RS28A so I bought them. A day later I noticed they are now out of stock on those too, so I feel pretty lucky. Lucky twice with this kit so far. That's kind of like an omen of sorts. I've had tweeters go bad on me before due to age. I was not happy about having built a one life speaker. I feel better now.

I almost left them, thinking I should leave them for those really needing a repair. But these days, what ends up happening is, the blasted 'collectors' get ahold of things like this and hold them for ransom. Try to buy an old Stanley chisel or block plane now that they have become 'collectible' and you will find some guy who has cornered the market and will sell it for 20x it's actual value, just because. Ok, this is not that special and I am probably being a bit dramatic over a relatively cheap tweeter but, it doesn't take much to thrill me these days. :)

Non-audio purchase but I like them. Held Tour Guide motorcycling gloves. Kangaroo skin palms, Superfabric (ceramic infused) protection pad on heel. Perforated on palm, finger sides. Padding on back except the hard plastic knuckle protector sewn under the goatskin leather back. Essential wrist cinch to keep the gloves from flying in the event of a high speed off. I can pick up a nickel from a flat table, not quite a dime. ;)

This is my 3rd pair of Held gloves in 17 years. They last. I've worn through the kangaroo skin palm on them after about 8-9 years per pair. When kangaroo skin gets wet it doesn't loose anything, and dries out quick without shrinking or getting stiff. Drum dyed leathers never bleed colors. Other gloves I've had have turned my hands colors when they get wet. I'll probably always have at least one pair of Held, probably more.

Best single cup maker I know of is the $ 30 Aeropress....but a bit more manual than a maker.
dumped the keurig years ago for one of these........

I've yet to experience a better kcup machine, the little 'prob' that enters into the kcup actually rotates to better disperse the super heated water. Makes a hotter better brewed cup of coffee IMO

The link just took me to a page with an "iCoffee" on a field of beans....

I don't want the waste and expense of kcups myself.

lovin, in case you haven't noticed, one can utilize the 'do it yourself' kcups, add coffee of your choosing and away you go. no waste/expense there !

Wasn't aware there were reuseable kcups! I've worked in offices with the plastic tree of cups/flavors, pretty much all I've seen of them. Good to know but still more bother than the aeropress....

Kcups...I get you on the expense, but what's the waste? The Kcups themselves are green. We thought we were wasting more with the pot and pouring some out everyday.

They are expensive, it's one of those Costco purchases for us...now that it's only the two of us drinking...a box of Kcup works out to a little less than $20 a mo.
