Hi there! Please could anyone help me? I recently bought a 520 series Denon amplifier and cd player and some Denon speakers to go with it! Well it's a great sound! However i wanted a surround sound and really wanted to be able to have four speakers! I'm not able to do this as it's only got two connections! I also wanted to put a sub with it! I know absolutely nothing about it all! I have spoken with a stereo equipment dealer who told me about the denon home cinema amplifier avr X 2400! But although I do enjoy watching films i am more bothered about the music department! I have seen the denon 720 amplifier and from the speck pictures it seems i can have four speakers and a sub and my laptop and TV! What should I be looking at here??

Honestly, the first questions:

1) What is your budget
2) How big is your listening room (include any connecting spaces)
3) What is your end goal here?

I don't want to spend more than 500 on new speakers! And the same on a sub and the same on a new amplifier! I want to have four speakers and a sub!

Whoah, tone it down there, pard'ner. We might be able to help. As I read this post it looks like you have $1500 to spend on a new amp, sub and 2 more speakers?

Pogre: Going all western are we pard'ner? I'd like to see the mashup of the metal guy and the sequined Porter Wagner that comes out of that. My imagination often runs off on a tangent.

I hope your idea that there's 3 $500 buckets to spend is the correct one.
It would be a snug fit if otherwise.

The chief problem with the Denon 520 is that its a 2 channel integrated amp. Nothing wrong with the box, its a great box. But its a 2 channel setup.

When I see a request that says I want 4 speakers and a sub it always leaves me asking "for what?"
I remember another poster wanting 4 speakers. He didn't want a 5.1 multi channel setup for surround sound. No. He just wanted his music with 4 speakers. That thread went south in a hurry.

Jamie Jambo, the OP, could spring for any of the Denon mulitchannel AVRs that fit the budget if surround sound is the goal. The sub connection comes on just about every Denon AVR for sale today in the U.S.
Its literally a task of just getting a list of the Denons and picking one that has the features desired at the price point he wants. There's just about zero difference in audible output (maybe differences in Audessey capabilities). Or, you could recommend any number of the Marantz AVR's like you have. Great stuff.

To the OP: whatever subwoofer Pogre recommends, take that as a solid reference by someone who has killer subwoofers. Pogres subs are monstrous.

There are so many speakers to choose from, I'm going to just let that choice fall to the folks who really know that $500 a pair category. I'm just not the right guy for that.

Have some fun Jamie Jambo: buying new gear and setting it up is one of the most interesting tasks in audio. Listening is also pretty cool.

Ha! You won't see me sporting rhinestones any time soon! :p

I'm with you Buck. Especially when it comes to integrating a sub, the bass management of an avr is hard to beat. As I was reading the first post, the Denon AVR X3300W was the first thing that popped into my head. As far as subs go, that's gonna be dependant upon how much he spends on speakers. I've said it a million times, good subwoofage is very often underrated. A good sub(s) can really elevate your listening experience. I'd put as much, or even more into the subs than the main speakers (at least in my house!).

Can you please clarify the exact model numbers? Is that a PMA520 integrated amp? Which speakers do you have? CD player? Just helps to know exactly what we're dealing with here....and budget clarification would be good, too.

I'll have a quick go.

The Denon AVR-X3300W Pogre linked at $500

A pair of JBL Studio 550p subs at $382/pr.
https://www.amazon.com/JBL-Studio-550P-10-Inch-Subwoofer/dp/B0071UQ8FS
(note the negative reviews are because this sub does not have the speaker level connects, other reviews are 5 stars)

Pair of Canton GLS 2 at $300.
https://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/cantgls2blka/canton-gls-2-6-2-way-bookshelf-speaker-black-pair/1.html

That puts you $318 under budget. You said 4 speakers. Not sure if you like the Denon speakers or not, but that could buy another pair of the Cantons if you need.

If you were more interested in Home Theater, the JBL sub might not be a good fit, but for music, with the addition of room gain, and having a pair to help even out the bass in your room, they will beat anything else you would find for under $500.

I'm sure for anyone who has never had a real system before, and knows nothing about it, the 2 jbls will be more than they could have imagined. For music or movies.

Bingo! -- that will make a serious good system

Are the cantons that good? I've been curious about them. Accessories4less has them and several other brands (cambridge and cabasse) that I rarely see mentioned on avs, but wonder about.

Yes, the Cantons are really nice -- and I have owned many, many speakers -- the GLS 2 are one of the better speakers that I have owned -- and they for sure play above the AC4L current $299 price.

Cambridge is also a nice brand, I owned their former S30 that I really liked -- I would like to hear Cabasse, however for some of their speakers they tend to get some mix reviews

In the year I've been here I'll bet Zieg has demoed and reviewed close to a dozen speakers in the budget range. He knows what he's talking about. The Cantons just recently dethroned his very well liked Q Acoustics 3020's in the thread Kurt linked above.

The realistic way to look at it is that the Canton GLS-2 competes reasonably well with the competition.
However, when you can buy them at only 37% of msrp, they become an exceptional speaker!

I could have made the same statement when I joined AH in 2009. Not sure how long he has been doing it, but he has a well trained ear and whenever he looks at a speaker I have listened to carefully, his comments reflect my experience.

I have a Denon 520 series amplifier , Denon add 41 speakers and a 520 series cd player! I have been looking at the denon avr receiver X 2400 and the 3300 avr! And the 720 Denon amplifier! I think both the home cinema avr receivers and the 720 can both take four speakers and a sub! I suppose i want to know what the difference between the avr and 720 is ! I essentially want four speakers and a sub! As well as being able to hear my TV through the speakers and have a laptop hooked up!
