So I want four stereo speakers and two subs and then 3 front speakers and what then? I'm sorry about keep rambling on! I'm really keen on getting everything right!
The AVRs you're looking at can generally handle 5.1 or 7.1 audio so you could add a left, center and right speaker (matched) and use your old Denons as surrounds, and with a sub, have 5.1 audio capability. Or, you could add yet another pair of speakers as rear surrounds (or front height, most can accommodate either setup) and a sub for 7.1 audio capability. DVDs only carry up to 5.1 audio as does most tv programming, but blu-rays can offer 7.1 as do some streaming services. Try this guide for speaker setup from Dolby.

I'd say set up 5.1 first. You can always add 2 more speakers if you like, but many of us stick with a 5 channel system unless we have a larger room to fill.

One thing at a time, grasshopper. I'd recommend getting the best AVR you can afford. It must have sub preout. If you don't have that you will be pissing pounds. There are always used speakers available. So...good AVR, cheap speakers, cheap sub, then better speakers, better sub, and so on. A good AVR can make crappy speakers sound acceptable.

Jamie,

The Gents here can help you select the best LCR (Left, Center, Right) Speakers as well as a good Sub if you can provide room dimensions and the amount of money you wish to spend. It's better to ask for advice before purchasing anything, than regretting what you buy later. ;)

Just read this thread, the whole thing. Lot's of great advice for the OP to ponder. But, would not a visit to a home electronics/appliance store somewhere in the OP's neighborhood be a better place to start? Any salesman, commissioned or not, can qualify the OP, and thereafter, the OP will have a basis of understanding for what he says he wants and what will actually satisfy.
